From a farmer's point of view, it's understandable that you have to shoot a few foxes to protect your chickens, although I feel like an upgrade in security for the chickens would be far more effective in the long run. Or like lurching where they started betting money on how many hares a dog could take during a night of hunting (that's where the criminals come in), bragging rights, or just as a protest against the ban. Hunting is a very deep rooted tradition with some people and they will do it no mater what, and the majority off these people are what you would call civilians. Anyone would be afraid of being caught if they were doing something illegal but ideology and money trumps those fears. I don't like the whole hunting for sport thing in general, but I think people should have the right to hunt no matter the reason as long as it's permitted in the lands. It's how they hunt that we should be concerned about. A quick kill with a hunting rifle is fine, but I don't like that they gotta sick their dogs at the foxes to tear them up alive. Also respect your kill, consume every part of your kill, don't let it rot on the floor to go to waste or rag-doll it around with a smile on your face, it's creepy.

Why don't just shoot the animal out of its mysery or find a more human way of doing this?? I'm sure there's a more efficient way of dealing with this problem without gathering a croud of people on horsebacks watching a pack of hounds tearing apart a wild animal. It's not like farmers use traditional methods from centuries ago to raise crops. Imagine ploughing with a yoke instead of using a tractor because it was done for centuries.

If its for pest control then why do hunt clubs build artificial fox dens to encourage breeding so the cubs can be hunted once they've grown? Would it not make sense to discourage breeding if its for the case of pest control? Nature has it's own ways of fixing overpopulation. Killing livestock isn't a valid reason as livestock are killed by humans anyway. Even if it was to fix overpopulation, there are plenty of methods to do so that don't require killing animals.

The introduction alone gave me chills…today I witnessed fox hunting in my own back garden (my dad has some land which he works on) we were informed (by the hunt) that the hunt was going out so we put the horse and the cat inside so that there was no way they could become involved or disrupted by it, i went outside to see if I could see anything going on and was greeted by two riders (they were very polite) and then I went to check on the horse. Standing on the back of the trailer I see a group of riders waiting up the public footpath and so I just stood and watched. A little while later a fox came out of my neighbours garden (which backs onto the horse field and public footpath) it went down the path to the “lane” and then waited as it saw the two riders I was first greeted by, it then went back up the path and disappeared, I assumed it had got away, then much further up another fox came out and ran across the field around the back towards the stables and road (separated by the hedge) it also disappeared then the first fox came back (a few minutes later I started recording but I couldn’t see the fox anymore nor did I catch it on film) Then the hounds started coming out of the field and I could see them sniffing where the fox ran across, next thing you know they’re running across the field and into my dads land following the path that the fox took, I was overwhelmed by this feeling that something about what was happening wasn’t right, the riders didn’t follow the dogs because it was on land that was separated by a fence and they couldn’t access it, After a few minutes you could hear them calling the hounds using the horn towards the road however one of them was stuck in my back garden/stables where the fox then reappeared. The hound then chased it away…I felt very lucky for the fox that only one of the dogs managed to find it and not the whole group because I don’t think I would have liked what could have happened if they had all found it. Although my parents don’t agree with the practice they wish to not be involved in doing anything about it because they know several individuals who take part in that club. My dad said that if I don’t like to see it then I should just not watch it and they both believe that if a fox is healthy then 9/10 times the fox will be able to out run the hounds and hide because it knows all of the little pathways and gaps in the area as it always uses them. Therefore only the weak and ill foxes get caught. My question is will I even be able to do anything about them not legally following practices I.e letting the hounds chase the fox rather than following the trail without any backing or support from the landowner / my family as they feel like they’re in a difficult position

As far as controlling foxes with hounds goes, it's the least effective way of doing it. We persecute thousands of foxes every year in the uk, majority are shot with a rifle, or held with a snare and shot with a shotgun. There is no argument for controlling foxes with hounds when there are far more efficient ways of doing it. With ferreting, it's an extremely effective way of controlling rabbits, it's effective and efficient. And leaves very little impact on the wider countryside. Like it or lump it, we need diversity in our countryside, left to it's own means, we would live in a mono culture bio-landscape where a small amount of species would thrive, and the rest would not. The driving force behind any species is to thrive, breed and dominate. An rspb wetland reserve proved this, they decided to "let nature take it's course" and the entire reserve was dominated by brambles and corvid. We need management and control in our countryside, but we don't need fox hunting. We need effective and humane ways of controlling species, that, by there very nature are extremely adaptable and would cause a disruption to the overall bio diversity of the countryside.

It’s now illegal to kill foxes so why is the practice still so widely continued even though it’s prohibited- doing a uni project on hunting and poaching within the uk, if anyone can give me their point of view from both sides then that would be greatly appreciated 😋

I'm not affected by the outcome of dog fighting or human trafficking either but I take issue with it because I think of myself as a decent human being who doesn't enjoy seeing misery and pain inflicted on others.

29:42 "Research shows the population of foxes had gone down since the hunting ban and not gone up". What?
@78terrier6 жыл бұрын
Foxes are more likely to be shot now. A fit fox could outrun the hounds, but it can't outrun a bullet. Also, many landowners would tolerate foxes solely because of hunting. Like it or not, the increase in the number of foxes killed since the ban should be incorporated into a decision on how best to deal with the issue. Saddest of all, there was an option to make genuine welfare improvements. A ban on cruelty (with or without dogs) was proposed - and was rejected outright by The League Against Cruel Sports because they just wanted a hunting ban.

No they're not. Hunts are more likely to take a token shot. I was out every Saturday bar 2 last season and I saw more foxes being killed by hounds than shotgun. That's complete rubbish that even a healthy, fit fox can outrun 20-30 hounds, plus riders and supporters. Did you even bother to watch the video? You people are inpenetrable. Witness illegal hunting and cruelty for yourselves and you'd still find a way to explain it away.
@paulinedevine23936 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I saw the footage. I saw what happened, did you? "We have our guns stationed where we know the fox will run" they're all fox whisperers didn't you know?? They know exactly where the fox is gonna run at all times, shame they can't communicate that to their gunmen.
@78terrier6 жыл бұрын
Perhaps I didn't explain myself very well. I mean they're more likely to be shot without hounds even being present, because the landowner has less reason to tolerate the fox. To respond to your comment, "Witness illegal hunting and cruelty for yourselves and you'd still find a way to explain it away.". I believe that the ban is deleterious to animal welfare and to conservation - so I suppose you're right - I would explain it away. Cruelty though, I would not "explain away". Let's not conflate the two issues - I'm in favour of hunting. I do not consider that a predator hunting prey is inherently cruel. If I did, I'd be in favour of getting rid of ALL foxes, stoats, weasels, BOP... etc. For the record - I'm not. And yes, I watched the video. Right through.

If they want pest control, they should put out humane traps, spay or neuter the foxes, and then release them back to where they were found. It's important to have some predators, or else you'll end up overrun with mice, rats, voles, and other varmints that can cause much more damage than a couple of foxes living in the hedge. The few who avoid the traps can produce enough kits to keep the ecological balance going. It works really well with feral cats, so why can't it work here? Oh wait, nobody hunts feral cats for fun, just foxes. 🦊

These are the exact same people who in some countries treat there animals inhumanely, a nations civilization is graded on how it treats their animals, you can clearly see that education has very little to do with intelligence, this is why there are so many deviants, child molesters, narcissists, psychopaths and sociopaths within the gentry of England, they have the education of intellect but little to no intelligence

If this isn't a first world problem for you, to hunt animals for fun then your country shouldn't be considered a first world country either. Are you living in the 18th century or what??
