I sued contractors, who did not have a license before, for doing awful work on my house! All you have to do is file a complaint through the State of Michigan Attorney General's office and they put a warrant our for his arrest and he will be brought into court. You prove your case to the civil or criminal court and get all your money back. I did this to two contractors and won both times, the AG for the state is your attorney and it is free. I am surprised Rob is not telling more homeowners how to do this and get their money back. If they are licensed then there is a different recourse to go through,. I have done it both ways and won both times. Know the law and your rights people.

@beakt
@beakt 2 жыл бұрын
Rob, exposing the bad guy and watching him stammer is entertaining, but it doesn't really help with anything. Even watching these guys get convicted might make us all feel like the story is complete, but it's not. This will continue to happen if homeowners don't protect themselves. At the end of every story you should take some time to explain to viewers that for major remodels, they should: 1. Ask to see the laminated license card for the contractor, look up the contractor's business in the secretary of state's database to confirm that individual is part of the business, look up the license number on the board's website to confirm it's that company's (and individual's) license. Ask for his driver license or otherwise confirm his phone number and business address match what's on the license. This helps prevent someone from simply stealing the identity of a licensed contractor. 2. Get the insurance declaration for liability and workers comp, check that it matches the business/individual name, and call the insurance company to verify. 3. Ask for permit numbers of previous jobs. Look up the permits and confirm they have the contractor's name on them and that they passed final inspection. 4. Ask for contact information of the homeowners for these previous jobs, and call to find out how their experience was. 5. Review the proposed contract carefully for any trickery, such as absolving themselves from having to fix their own bad work. Once the contract is signed, don't let him touch a thing until permits are issued. Review the permits to confirm they show the contractor's name and that they list all the work you will have done, and even call the city and describe the work and ask them if the permits you have cover all that. If you don't do that, you're doing little to prevent other homeowners from getting scammed. For every Kevin Cupp you catch, there are thousands more doing the same thing because homeowners fall for it.

It's more like a moral victory. Can't undo the damage but at least you can name and shame people who do this in the hopes that they won't get new business. In the end public disclosure and keeping citizens informed of bad faith actors is the role of the media, and this is what's happening.

THIS is why good contractors charge more than the "going rate" because WE KNOW what's involved in a project like this one.
@smartysmarty1714
@smartysmarty1714 2 жыл бұрын
The older you get, the harder it is to land jobs because you've seen it all, suffered through it all, and learned some hard lessons. So you price accordingly. For example, a bathroom remodel on the second floor now costs (if you hire me) quite a bit more than if it was the same project on the first floor. I used to not think that way, but facts are facts and hauling everything up/down takes a lot more time and effort. The same applies to building access, parking, everything really. So I find myself being my own competition because I'm experienced enough to charge for things others don't see or consider.

Homeowners need to get a little education themselves. Every job that has been permitted must display permit on front of house with inspection stickers. If we as homeowners get more involved and pull permits it will protect against shady contractors. The permitting process is not just a money grab, it also protects current and future homeowners. I hope she gets some type of help in getting the matter squared away

@beakt
@beakt 2 жыл бұрын
One correction: Don't pull the permit as a homeowner. Make your contractor do it, so his name is on it. That way he's responsible for ten years for any latent defects (contractors carry insurance for this long after they retire for this reason). At least that's how it is in California, and likely similar in other states.

Not completely. There perfect reputable builders who have employees who aren't licensed contractors nor have insurance in their own right but have the skills and ability to act as independent builders for a job. In effect its a sub contractor setup in all but name, but obviously in order for the permits and insurance to be legally valid the payment must be made to person who holds the license and insurance not direct to the person who physically does the work.

Men like this need to be held accountable for their lack of integrity, honesty and transparency. Sorry to say this now as it comes to late for this lady. Always check for the insurance before "ANY" work starts or paper work is signed. verify that the contractor is indeed a contractor and can pull permits (city hall will know). As scary as this maybe talk with a building inspector, they maybe the one to help you avoid a blunder like this ripoff artist.

I thought it would be really tough to get business because of jackasses like this guy and or others that rob reports on. Especially being a recovering addict with felony drug convictions. But it turns out that I'm doing pretty well. Then once you start to build a little bit of a reputation for yourself these type of people just make us look even that much better! That's just my take on it anyway . But yes it is a shame that people loose out on their hard earned money sometimes life savings because of these scum bags ! Then furthermore I did prison time for things that didn't even have a victim like possession of my own personal drugs , but people like this can get away with stealing and harming people . Kinda disgusting

The drywall up in that formerly attic area also goes all the way up to the apex of the roof. Typically you want to leave a little air space up there to allow for ventilation. That is the most common thing people get wrong when converting attic space to living space. It's a tricky balance to get the insulation and ventilation right between the drywall, roof as well as between the rafters.
@justinstevenson2061

The contractor should have removed it, filled in the space with wall. However, at 1:30 the staircase width, etc. Generally indoor stairs must meet certain conditions per code, though it's not so unusual for variances to be asked for, allowed when redoing an older house...often some compromises need to be made when doing these sort of projects in older houses. I cannot sit here and feel sorry or bad for homeowners who don’t do their due diligence and just openly trust people. It’s your responsibility to check and verify the companies you hire to work on or in your homes are indeed licensed and that the insurance they carry is valid. It’s also your responsibility to make sure these companies have filed the proper permits and have been given the okay to do the work through the city you reside in.

@@ejboatright I hope you understand how the real world works one day. It is indeed your responsibility to ensure the company you hire to do the work is licensed, bonded, and insured. 🙄 It takes less than a minute to ask “may I see your paperwork to verify that you’re licensed, bonded, and insured?” If the company starts making up excuses or beats around the bush, then just start calling around to find a different company to get the job done legally and properly. There’s no “victim blaming” when it comes to facts and due diligence. I can only imagine this going in front of a judge and watching them state the same exact things that I just have.

That's what I thought too. They edited the footage of him responding to the question to make it seemed like he lies and then AFTER they showed him saying he been there twice. He's probably a shady cat but there's other variables in this case that we only got hints about that seem pretty important to know if this dude is for real a scumbag or not. I've worked for and with guys like this. Some are scumbags, some are incompetent and don't cover their bases and fuck up. Honestly as a customer this is the expectation not the exception. I try to give as little cash upfront. I've purchased all construction materials together with contractors so I can give a smaller deposit. I always make sure I owe enough money to make it worthwhile for them to continue. I've had some garbage work done and it wasn't for a small amount. At some point I learned to do small projects myself. I built a deck with city permits because I didn't want the cost or stress of hiring. The inspector pointed out that a contractor would have never done it as well as I did. The good contractors all want to work on mansions with big budgets.
