I hope they throw out that lawsuit. It's your responsibility to care for yourself. If the flight is "long", then you must do what is required to keep you healthy like flights to Europe. If you're not fit, you shouldn't overdo it on vacation. It's not anyone's fault but your own if you get sick or injured doing what you are doing because you're not used to doing so much or that activity. It's your job to pace yourself - your job - not anyone else's.

If you think that’s ridiculous, you should’ve seen the tourists who tried to sue because her husband died in a flash flood here while crossing a stream on a hike and she said the state didn’t do enough to warn them… AFTER she went on the local news and admitted they had received text alert warning of flash floods and admitting there had been NUMEROUS warning signs along the trail they had hiked about not crossing streams because of the flash flood warning… and admitted to ignoring those warnings. Tourists 🙄!!

The worst is seeing out-of-shape tourists try to go hiking and almost have a heart attack. If you don't hike at home, don't try to hike in Hawaii. You've got steep slopes, heat, and humidity to deal with and it requires a certain base line of fitness to handle.

I ran in to a 25 year old at the top of the stairs who had also done the same hike the day before doing the stairs, and he was saying his legs were screaming. He was 1/2 my age, so i think I did alright ..

It's very common for people to have heart attacks; while snorkeling; and they aren't accustomed to the activity. Snorkeling puts a strain on your cardiac and respiratory systems, and you don't realize it, during the moment. A person who is new to snorkeling should take periodic breaks to rest and breathe, without the snorkel mask on. I used to vacation a lot in the Florida Keys and every year, I'd read; in the local newspaper; about someone who'd died from snorkeling.

The family should go after the snorkeling center - not for money - but to put up signs so guests can clearly see the risks and look for signs. Sad this family lost a loved one. Maybe they can save someone else by getting the word out. I had no idea!

It is not Hawaii’s fault for not warning people. In my opinion it is the responsibility of the tourist, but if they wanted to do something useful then ask all air travel to warn people when booking long flights. We fly to India, the Middle East, etc. From the USA and those are about three times longer than when we fly to Hawaii.

I flew to the Big Island a 5 hr flight after flying from Ireland no problem. You do what you're advised and move around the plane, wear flight socks and drink lots of water.. Go to the doc if you have symptoms not sue everyone you can think of.. Your health responsibility is ALL yours no one elses

Every person's body reacts differently. Couch potatoes can't just do activities that are physically demanding. It's not the fault of Hawaii that you're not physically prepared to climb Diamond Head or swim, (ESPECIALLY IN THE OCEAN) , for hours at a time. I worked as a nurse in the ER for 10 years on Maui. I know all about this.

They sure did, but if you go in the water at one atmosphere shouldn’t be a problem at all. It doesn’t mess with decompression. The only issue after a flight is dehydration and fatigue. However, you should wait 24 hours before flying.

I have seen this ROPE syndrome while working, very hard to reverse. Pt was intubated, given drugs to cause rapid urine loss. Left hosp 3 days later. ON MEDS. Takes an emergency crew of experienced staff and a hospital after stabilization.
