I have to chime in. I am a retired 38 yr Deputy Sheriff. On March 16th 1983, we received a Domestic Disturbance call, ref an individual who was known, threatening his wife with a shotgun. Myself and three other deputies responded from different areas of the county in FL. Upon arrival two of the deputies blocked the roadway in front of the address about 350 feet further on each end of the road. Before we could get on scene (I for example was 39 miles away at call time), the suspect had shot his wife in her stomach, according to his children who were present as well. Before myself and the neighboring City Police, who were assisted mutual aid, could arrive, one of the officers screamed over the radio of being shot. After that the memory from that point to going on scene was a blur for me. I was assigned as a K9 officer and my partner was with me. When I arrived, EMS had tried to rescue our officers who were shot laying in the street, by placing the Ambulances between the suspect and the injured but not without taking fire. The suspect had been hiding behind trees in his yard with a 16ga shotgun loaded with rifled slugs. He retreated into the house, after seeing his Hell descending upon the scene by us. EMS transported our injured which I later found out it was my high school buddy and agency partner as we grew up together, went to school, and started on the agency in 1976 together. He was newly wed and had recently had a baby girl 3 months prior. The standoff ended with the suspect attempting to shoot himself and failing to do it correctly. As we were handcuffing him, our Sheriff advised dispatch to have me be enroute to our Emergency room. I knew why without being told. When I got to the ER, his wife was standing in the double doors and we both almost collapsed as it was confirmed it was her husband and my friend as being shot and passing away subsequently. Short story the suspect was found guilty of murder, spared the death penalty, and tried for parole 5 times in the 40 years he was in Florida State Prison. Each of the 5 times we would request the board to deny his request which they did. He finally died an old man of 80 two years ago 2021 never gotten out. His wife long ago remarried after healing her stomach wound. The suspect was having Mental health issues, and was treated half-assed several times, but never had the proper facilities for long term treatment. They have shut all long term mental health facilities down over two decades ago everywhere. These powder kegs are everywhere. Waiting for a trigger, an incident, a perceived problem whether real or not. My heart goes out to this fellow Deputy Sheriffs Family and friends. He is at peace with our Father at the throne reserved for those killed in the line of duty. Never forget him, work to correct the problems, and above all support each other fully. His name will join my friends in the Law Enforcement Officers Killed Memorial in Washington DC. Oh a side note, their baby girl who was my goddaughter incidentally, has gotten married and has a family. So very proud of her and her mother. Help restore Mental illness facilities and treatment hospitals. Get them off the street

Interesting how this sheriff didn't need to read from a piece of paper like the mayor of Oakland did.

This is so sad on so many levels. Mental illness is real. Now this deputy's family has to go into the New Year without their loved one.

Does Spalding county recognize the written law or just do what ever the h311 they want as they do in Muscogee County?
@brocklanders696910 ай бұрын
@the-ugly-truth9653 No, we all don't. We all know that criminals do whatever they want -- don't obey the law.
