This is a falsehood; a similar approach was implemented in London, and the congestion there has not diminished, but rather increased. Consider taking legal action against MTA, as it seems they are feeding you misinformation. It appears their motive is merely to generate additional revenue for themselves.

Yes, the congestion charge that's now payable in London ($15.90 per day) is NOT working because if you live outside of London you NEED a car or vehicle to get from A to B around the country and into London itself as the public transport systems outside of the capital are expensive and very unreliable. Added to this are London's new Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTN's) which have restricted access to certain residential roads therefore pushing the traffic onto already overburdened and busy main roads where vehicles get stuck in queues with their engines idling and polluting the area even more! Another consequence of these measures is that medium to low income earners are being further stretched financially in the capital and therefore seeking to move out of London into the surrounding counties for respite which has pushed the prices of property rentals and purchases up in those areas. For example, where I live about 7 miles from the border (20 miles to the centre) of London a 2 bedroom apartment was $1500 per month to rent 6 months ago - now it's at least $2000+ because of demand!

Anyone who works in the city and lives out of the city can add about another $4000.00 dollars per year to your commuting cost. Congestion pricing is a fall in wages induced by city government policies. It is happening because the city and the city council are unable to coordinate a plan that falls on the heels of another social transformation of the workplace, people who work from home and employed by companies in the city. An opportunity is seen here to lower emissions. For those who’s workplace is the city cannot work from home your emissions will cost you more even if you walk to the city and leave no carbon foot print. It does not appear you have a democracy when one group lives off the backs of another. If working people do not want to see their wages fall and have their voices heard by the council and mayor they have to make a lot of noise and disruption to get the city to come up wth a better plan that is not an unequal distribution of a burden.

@@durece100 no it won’t, commercial vehicles take up all the parking. Paying for parking already cost an arm and a leg for a few hours. The only people truly affected by this process are people who need to drive into the city. Construction workers, police officers, teachers, food delivery etc. The city is congested because there is 1.6 million people living there, excluding people from other boroughs coming to work there. The pricing is a bandaid for the real issue…

UFT Pres. Mulgrew has no business using hard earned teacher's union dues to pay for a capricious law suit against the MTA. We all know that the powerful MTA has plenty of powerful political interests to support any MTA political actions. It's a classic case of throwing good money after bad money. If the ambitious Mulgrew has higher political objectives in mind, then stop using union coffers to support his campaign. I'm a Local 100 MTA union member. I clearly remember Local 100 Pres. Toussaint enthusiastically shaking hands with the ultra powerful MTA Chairman Kalikow after some 2004 sell out union/mgmt negotiations. Union presidents are notorious for squandering monies that don' t belong to them . The name James R Hoffa comes to mind. .

New York City should look to Amsterdam, not London, to figure out how it should reduce car traffic. The single most important step for reducing car traffic is making the car routes long and circuitous so that bikes can always take the fastest route to go anywhere. We already have two roads - FDR Drive on the east and the West Side Highway on the west - so there should not be a need to have through traffic on every single avenue.
@enarush1

So when they shut down the FDR due to a car accident or theres a UN meeting or West Side is closed due to a major accident, cars shouldn’t have alternate routes to get around the traffic

Not everyone has access to public transportation. People come into Manhattan for many reasons and transit deserts do exist in the city of new york. Most Americans drive because there is no other option to get to certain areas. Stop acting like everyone can just use public transit

@flipsolo Congestion Pricing is not the answer to address that problem. It will just make pollution worse in the outer boroughs. It's not just about teachers. It has too many negatives, and the MTA has a history of wasting money. They got 19.8 billion dollars last year. I doubt an extra 2 billion will all of a sudden make things better. Heck, the MTA admitted that service wouldn't change if implemented.
