I agree with the Governor of NJ on this too. First he opposed NY camera tickets by saying it was a money grab, and NJ DMV was not going to release license plate numbers to NY for ticketing. Now he made another point. People that live outside the City, but work in it, already pay a commuter tax to the City on their yearly tax returns.

its great for a first job when you are young to get experience/enjoy social activities. But after a couple years if you aren't making a really high salary (or you don't have a choice), I don't see any reason to commute into NYC from NJ.

The ULEZ congestion charge that's now payable in London ($15.90 per day) is NOT working because if you live outside of London you NEED a car or vehicle to get from A to B around the country and into London itself as the public transport systems outside of the capital are expensive and unreliable. Added to this are London's new Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTN's) which have restricted access to certain residential roads therefore pushing the traffic onto already overburdened and busy main roads where vehicles get stuck in queues with their engines idling and polluting the area even more! Another consequence of these measures is that medium to low income earners are being further stretched financially in the capital and therefore seeking to move out of London into the surrounding counties for respite which has pushed the prices of property rentals and purchases up in those areas. For example, where I live, about 7 miles from the border (20 miles to the centre) of London, a 2 bedroom apartment was $1500 per month to rent 6 months ago - now it's at least $2000 because of demand! And the demand for housing in the UK is high overall because of the immigration we've been experiencing over the past 15 years. Just to remind the world that the UK is only the same size as New Zealand (pop. 7 million) but our current population is around 70 million people on only 94,060 square miles of land! That's 725 people per sq mile overall. The USA is 3,796,742 sq miles of land with 96 people per sq mile overall. By comparison, New York State is 54,556 square miles (416 people per sq mile) with about 19 million people living there - 9 million of which live in NYC - one of the densest cities in the world with 29,000 people per sq mile! But as Mayor Adams said: "We're not just saying we're out of room as a sound bite, we're out of room literally. People are going to be eventually sleeping on the streets."
