If you go by the US governments own numbers. Canada is responsible for 0.2% of fentanyl and 1.2% of the migrant issues. It's a pretense to cover for the blatant, predatory protectionist bull that every newly elected US president has done for decades. Canada needs to move on to trade with the rest of the world as it already should have been doing.

23% of US refinery feedstock comes from Canada, and most of those refineries can't just switch to US product; they aren't built to use that kind of oil. So sure, let's put a 25% tariff on Canadian oil, and pass the cost on to the consumer. Then we can see what a tariff on Canadian timber does to construction costs...

His remarks on tariffs is very short-sighted. They have no idea how pissed off Canadians are. These threats from America on Canada are going to have lasting economic ramifications on America. @ We can ship by rail, we have existing pipelines and can build more. Canada has Grain, potash and a lot of other products that Europe, Japan and china need. You are only right on the fact that Canada has blocked sales of a lot of things to these countries, you are wrong in thinking they don't want it. We've just structured our supply chains to feed the US. That can easily change. Short term we lose long term we can win if we restructure. The real fact is the Americans will still buy a majority of our stuff because they really do need it. They've been having this argument way before Trump took office and always back down. They duty our lumber and still buy it... Our manufacturing will get decimated and there should be a plan on how to fix that. Canada is a large market for heavy machinery and we should manufacture more of that here. Plus, if trump will tariff everyone why would manufactures make stuff there? take advantage of another countries trade relationships and make it cheaper.

The US does absolutely nothing to stop US employers from hiring undocumented migrants. US employers are eager to hire them and willing to offer them work at higher wages than they could get in their own countries. So of course they come, as you'd expect. Then we demand that Canada and Mexico stop them. This makes no sense at all. Demand drives supply, not the other way round. If you want to stip illegal immigration the first and most important step is a meaningful crackdown on the people hiring them. Or we could just wake up and realize that out immigration laws are obsolete and need to change.

To impose 25% tariff for the BS reason of border security just a "illegal" reason to veto the trade current trade agreements. Very little illegal activity goes from Canada to the USA...compared to the illegal gun running that goes from US to Canada. 80% of illegal drugs coming into the US from Mexico is brought in by Americans. Maybe the USA should secure its own borders. It is very, very difficult for a Mexican to own guns. But the USA arms manufactures provides the cartels with weapons through illegal border crossing into Mexico, which is kinda Mexico's problem.

They won’t eat at least 3x higher wages and stricter safety regulations. So unless y’all want Americans to work for below poverty wages IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN. Also, these countries don’t pay the tariffs so they won’t give two shits. The company doing the importing will be paying the tariffs and they don’t care either because they just pass it on to us AS A TAX. Are there no longer any sane republican brains left? Did Trump scare them all away?? We’re absolutely screwed. Energy & food imports from Canada & Mexico total ~$250bn a year. Look for the tariffs _on oil alone_ to add about 1% to consumer prices. Gasoline is ~4% of the CPI and will likely rise by 75¢ to $1/gallon, or 25-33%. Then there's autos, auto parts, lumber... Remember, tariffs are paid in the importing nation. Enjoy!

It is total imports of American made products divided by population. On a per capita basis, Canada buys 84 TIMES what China buys, and more than three TIMES what America's next best customer, name Mexico, buys. If per capita purchases are a proxy for how dedicated a country is to buying American in a trade relationship, America has no trading partner like Canada. China - $147.81 Billion/1.411 Billion people = $105 US per citizen Europe - $368.76 Billion/742.3 Million people = $497 US per citizen Japan - $76.15 Billion/124.5 Million people = $612 US per citizen UK - $74.05 Billion/68.35 Million people = $1,083 US per citizen Australia - $33.7 Billion/26.64 Million people = $1,265 US per citizen South Korea - $87.8 Billion/51.71 Million people = $1,698 US per citizen Mexico - $323.23 Billion/128.5 Million people = $2,515 US per citizen Canada - $352.76 Billion/40.1 Million people = $8,797 US per citizen

Canada holds $400 billion of treasury bonds. The US get a 20% discount on heavy oil and import 4.7 million barrels a day. If they increase the price of oil to daily WTI spot prices, the US consumer will have to eat the costs. If they use the treasury bills to offset a tariff, the US consumer will pay. Now we still have $100 Trillion in funded and unfunded liabilities, the funded liabilities cost over 1 trillion a year currently in interest. How is a 25% tariff good to Americans? It just makes everything you buy 25% more expensive (heavy crude, uranium, aluminum, power etc.) The exporter doesn’t pay the tariff, the importer does - hence why boarders and customs collects it. Also to think this will bring back Manufacturing is simply stupid. Just look at the MAGA hats, why do you think they’re made in China? Because labor is 1/10th of what it would cost in the USA. Make that hat in the states and it would cost $80 at the check-out.

75% of Canada's exports are raw materials, US workers turn this into finished products. USA needs these materials, they are not availble in the states. Tariffs are a tax on goods Americans pay to raise the price on said good so local stuff is more competitive. a quarter to a third of oil refined in the US is from Canada and it is heavy oil the US does not have and mixed to supply diesel. When you tax energy it is a multiplier that goes through the whole economy. Prices for US goods could rise the same amount the stuff that has tariffs do. Canada is one of the few place the US has basically won almost across the board and bs the public saying they have a bad deal. We will see what Trump does as it is different from what he says but if follows through expect everything in the US to go up 10-50% this year possibly more.

Someone please explain to me, I feel pretty dumb.

If they move their company into the U.S. they don't pay a tarrif. And the prices don't go up if you don't buy it or if they reduce their profits. Trump had no inflation and had tariffs in his first term. You don't know what you're talking about.

if you don't secure your border, you pay the price, a tariff call it what you want. We're fed up with countries taking advantage. Just like committing a crime. If you don't comply, you pay the price. All they need to do is secure their borders. Easy.

More illegals go into Canada from the USA than vice versa same with all other complaints, drugs, guns. And technically the consumer pays the price. You will pay more for Canadian supplies like oil, steel, nickel, electricity, lumber, food. A tarrif is not a tax on a nation it's a tax on companys who import product.

@@Freyja123 are you proving our point, Canada is NOT a border issue for the USA and is certainly not worse than Mexico as T seems to be indicating the last few days, so explain to me the logic of the tariff threat again???He is doing a good job of unifying Canadians which will only weaken US stance with us moving forward. Much like many countries the US is appearing less and less of a reliable partner and is a trend you would be wise to reverse. Your pres isnt going to restructure the north american economic model in a week, a month or even a term, but he sure can and likely will damage relations in that same time frame.

As a Canadian citizen with a grade 9 education and 11 different schools enter my belt. Truly, I am the child left behind through pore schooling.....The day Canada stops fighting Trump and gets behind him is the day we prosper. The day the world stands behind Elon Musk and Trump is the day we go to Mars. The answer is simple.. the world is ruled by arrogant fools. That don't even see what's all around them. they are sure going to see Mr. Trump in front of them. Love you Trump ✊️🇨🇦🇺🇲👊

I'm sorry you have had a rotten life. I'm not sure if you can blame it all on our education system though. Canada has a much better public education system than the US and Canadians as a whole are better educated than Americans. As for standing behind evil men like Trump and Musk, you are deluded.
