Why do those who are well off think the poor deserve less rights and freedoms than they have and take for granted? They should have the same freedom to use the funds given to them to buy the foods that they need, and that work for them, as you do! Even if that means the occasional treat. What your suggesting isn't help, its control and manipulation! And there's more than enough of that in this system already! Leave the poor alone! Focus on getting rid of all the crappy additives in our food if you want to help make people healthier again. You can't force it on people. Only give them better options to choose from, by making sure real non tainted foods are available! And accessible by those most in need. If you have ever been stuck living below the poverty level, You'd know the choices of affordable food without all the crap additives in it is almost nonexistent! People going through difficult times likely need comfort food far more than you do, and should every right to use their freedom, and get a little when they need it. Take the toxic chemicals food additives out of the snacks. Make American food standards meet the European standards for safety. People can make their own decisions
@r.r.r.91819 күн бұрын
I agree that chemical food additives should be removed and that people, specifically consumers, can make their own decisions; however, people receiving SNAP are not consumers, rather they are government beneficiaries of aid and as such the government can and should restrict what those people buy with other people's tax dollars. SNAP recipients should not be able to buy anything but unprocessed food, dairy, and produce.
@lisaroriguez419618 күн бұрын
@r.r.r.918 I comprehend what you're saying but it seems a bit unconstitutional? Perhaps if there was some sort of incentive program if you use $50 of your benefit towards fresh fruit a.nd produce then you get an additional $50 for more fresh fruits and produce. If you choose to buy processed snacks you are limited to the amount that you are given. Incentivize people to make better choices. When you have government intervening and telling people what they can and can not do we end up in the trouble that we have found ourselves in the last 5 years.
@r.r.r.91818 күн бұрын
@@lisaroriguez4196 As a practical matter, your suggestion might be better in that it would cause less pushback (though I do worry about the waste and fraud that might arise because of it). Constitutionally, I think there is nothing stopping the government from restricting funds in the manner I suggested. Constitutional Considerations: Government Spending and Regulation: The federal government has broad discretion under the Spending Clause (Article I, Section 8) to impose conditions on how funds are used. This includes restricting SNAP benefits to certain types of food. Courts have generally upheld such conditions as long as they are reasonable and serve a legitimate public purpose. Equal Protection Clause (14th Amendment): If SNAP restrictions or incentives disproportionately affect specific groups (e.g., racial, socioeconomic, or regional demographics), there could be an Equal Protection challenge. However, courts usually apply rational basis review for economic and social welfare policies, requiring only that the policy be rationally related to a legitimate government interest (e.g., promoting public health). Due Process and Autonomy: While I understand your concern about government intervention infringing on personal choices, SNAP benefits are not considered an individual’s property or entitlement in the same way as private funds. Recipients agree to terms of use upon acceptance. As such, restrictions on the use of public funds do not typically violate due process rights.

Slice your potatoes make your own chips no cop outs allowed. I was raised on beans and potatoes homemade biscuits. We could not afford beef or pork. I never knew what hamburger was until I was a teenager. Never at pork until I had a job. Eat right and it is cheaper always.

*Conflating people eating junk food with the toxic ingredients in most foods* Meaning to say if you stop using toxic ingredients most foods including junk foods it would be a big enough improvement to say "go ahead and have a donut with your coffee" There's a lot of falsehood in the food pyramid. Who decides what's healthy??

No lie.. I am 60yrs old, have never seen a doctor in my adult life, drink only Coke and eat junkfood and hamburgers mostly at home. I am in better health, have a full head of non-grey hair, look younger(maybe 35) than anyone I know. I DECIDE WHAT IS HEALTHY FOR ME. 😁 When my time is up, its up. Life goes fast these people best learn to enjoy what they can.

It's a no brainer. I remember arguing with a lady that was on food stamps about how she should be able to use her card to pay for her daughters birthday party because she deserved it. Even though those of us who weren't on food stamps couldn't afford to do the same. She didn't care.

Some people can only afford processed food & pre made packs of stuff, some homeless people that receive ebt dont have a kitchen to cook fresh food in, these takes are so out of touch.
