This was fun to watch guys, I got bit by the gold bug about 50 years ago. I understand this was done for the fun of it as it should be. My partner and I do it mainly to get away from the city and suburbia Depending on where you are many times you find precious and semi-precious gemstones as you are panning if you know what to look for. When the gold rush was happening they were taking the gold that could be picked out of the pan with tweezers. So now about all you will find now is the fine gold. It's an enjoyable hobby for us, I hope you had an enjoyable day out on the creek

This brought back a memory from when I worked as a geotechnical engineer in South Lanarkshire. A technician and I had been in the Leadhills area assessing a landslip's effect on a minor road. On our way back to Hamilton, he asked me to stop the car. He got out and went down to the Clyde, I presumed, to relieve himself. On his return, he said, "Oh well, maybe next time". When asked for clarification, he explained he had noticed on one of the old Ordnance Survey maps that a gold nugget had been discovered at that spot in 1879. "So, I never pass there now without taking a look, because, you never know, lightening can strike in the same place twice." Clever boy!

I watched your blog about people being abusive to you both. think that is deplorable. My father used to say to me, 'Heather if you've nothing nice to say, then say nothing at all.' I could honestly give a shit about anyone's sexuality. Love is love and any form of love is far better than hate at any time. I am so very sorry that you've been subjected to any kind of homophobia. I honestly thought that kind of ignorance had ended long ago. There are some really nasty people out there. It was pleasing to hear that the majority of people commenting were lovely though. Try concentrating on them, and ignoring such ignorance ok....easier said that done i know but i don't want any of you getting hurt or it causing you to be depressed. I am proud you've chosen my home country to base your home in. Sorry i cannot afford to support you right now but my husband and i have hit a bad financial time right now and were struggling. At a local shopping centre there was a gentleman who had an exhibit on panning for gold. He even taught people how to do the panning. He had sand and gravel in water that we could try our hand to. Everyone who tried it was guaranteed of finding at least 1 fleck of gold. I found 4 flecks and he put them into a small clear vial with some water so you could shake it up and go "look what I got!" to all your friends. The water weighed more than the gold so now really worth much. Unfortunately I lost the vial somewhere on the rubbish heap of time.

Not gonna tell you where I live but.... I know one guy who pans for gold in the local river, been doing it for years, decades... He very nearly, almost has found enought gold to make his wife a ring lol A couple of other stories.... A local herdsman was throwing stones into the same river for his dog, picked one stone up, thought it was a bit heavy for a stone, was a 3kg gold nugget. A woman washing her clothes in the river was looking for a big stone to bash her clothes onto, picked up a rock... 8kg gold nugget! They are there boys.... Keep looking, that Porsche is only a humphed pan away ;-)

As a New Zealander this was a particularly interesting video. In the mid 1800's there was a gold rush here in New Zealand and many colonists came here to strike it rich (as did many Chinese who were unfortunately used basically as slave labour and treated rather badly). Coal mining was, and still is on the West Coast of the South Island, an ongoing industry. I've spent many hours myself panning for gold in the "Big River" and "Slab Hut Creek" areas of the West Coast... There are areas designated as recreational gold fossicking areas where you don't need a permit as long as you only use hand equipment and no motorised equipment (shaker boxes etc). Pretty sure you can even use small sluice boxes. My best effort was spending a week camping and panning for maybe 14 hours per day for the entire time... and getting enough to make just over $1,000. That was back in the early 90's so that was pretty nice. Very hard work though to do it seriously.
