Tyrus, you are so right. The bright students will be bullied because they are "different". Forty years ago, before gifted schools came to our town, my son was bullied by the jocks and the "cool" kids. His life was absolutely miserable. I can't tell you the times I was called to middle school with "He's ok, but his glasses are broken and he didn't fight back, so he's not suspended." He also tried to dumb himself down, not answer questions in class and otherwise try to be invisible. Needless to say, today his sons are enrolled in a charter school, where the students are working beyond grade level and they are happy and well adjusted being with their peers. These children are our future, and we're just dumbing them all down!

These are the same kind of people who destroyed Los Angeles schools AP calculus program. From Stand and Deliver, the real Jaime Escalante taught the poor Mexican kids advanced calculus, and every year, more and more kids passed the AP test. When he retired, his assistant took over, and the kids still did great. Eventually, the school system forced the assistant out, Mr. Escalante volunteered to return, and teach again, and the SCHOOL SYSTEM DENIED HIM BECAUSE THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT THE MINORITIES SUCCEEDING!!! The smart kids are not allowed to excel. But the athletic kids are. Not everyone can be captain of the team. The musical kids can have solos. The drama kids can get leading roles. Why so much discrimination against those who are academically gifted?

Chicago suburbs middle school...I informed a mother, immigrant from Africa, that her daughter was no longer an A+ student because she was no longer doing her homework or participating in class. The girl had given in to the pressure to make friends with the anti-establishment/bullies group. The mother called me a racist. At another middle school, a boy from Africa, also an A+ student, laughed off the mockery of his fellow classmates.

I don't get it. I don't understand how in the USA, of all the countries I could think of, there isn't something as basic and obvious as an education voucher and competition between schools.
