Good friend of mine graduated from law school and got a job as an assistant district attorney in NYC. Very eager guy, wanted to make a difference. And he'd been a law enforcement officer here in Massachusetts in a small city. He lasted less than six months then came back. He told me it was a horror show and that criminals just walked, even after committing really heinous crimes, he didn't see the point in staying and said if he had it would have destroyed him.

When I visited NYC earlier this year I made certain I stayed in Manhattan and only went out to eat and conduct business. I did not do any tourist stuff and only took Uber. No riding the subway or cabs. Did very little walking. New York didn't used to be this way. I used to ride the subway when I would visit New York. No longer.

Really? In 2000, there were 673 murders, 2068 rapes, 32,562 robberies, 38,352 burglaries and 35,442 car thefts. In 2023, there were 391 murders, 1455 rapes, 16,910 robberies, 13,773 burglaries and 15,795 car thefts. You're right, it didn't used to be this way. It was far worse. I think you just see it more because everyone has a phone now.

We need as a nation to make better connections to college students and others who would want to protect others. Also, President Trump will make sure that there is more attention paid to our beloved police officers. As was mentioned on this report we need people with integrity at all levels. The scenario the Inspector described nearly happened to me in 1991. I was walking out to a foot post after court and walked by the guy I arrested the night before for DWI. I was half asleep and he was washing his car. That takes the wind out of a rookies sails pretty quickly.

Corruption in New York? I'm shocked. Next you're going to tell me Chicago is a bastion of honesty among the government leaders there. Don't even get me started on Boston or DC because those two places are absolute centers of honesty and fiscal responsibility. That aside, when you have a system that is easy to abuse and people that are A: Disgruntled B: Not held accountable C: Enabled and encouraged to abuse the system. They will do so without reservations. I get why officers would do it. Bad ones are not dealt with, they get the blame for doing too much and going too far, until suddenly not doing enough or going far enough. Moving goal posts anyone? So yeah, I get it. Something six or so years ago would have been shrugged off like a minor trip stepping up a curb. Now? That'll be 12 weeks recovery time and light duty for another six months with a wink and tap on the side of the nose from the approval person. Because if the city doesn't want you doing your job, then milk the system for all you can and bounce to a better place before you can be fired and lose whatever part of a required pension you have.
