Beyonce is not responsible for what Kelis signed and is bound to. That ship sailed and she drove it into the rocks herself. Even if she was 15, was a lawyer present? Where were her parents if she was underage? Business is run by contracts, paperwork and signatures not "feelings" or perceived slights. If she really has a case she should be suing the Neptune's. AL is correct. If Kelis is in a bad place, that's unfortunate but she is older and more seasoned and should know better. Kelis has the right to be mad at everyone involved, period…stop using her recent loss as the reason she lashed out. She’s like any other artist, if you use something that she was clearly involved in making, then yes indeed, give her the courtesy of at least a credit on the song. Any one of us would feel a way about that. And she’s right in saying that y’all’s “queen” is all about female empowerment, so it would have made sense to reach out to Kelis ahead of time, even if Kelis had no rights to the song, it’s still her song.

I don't think this situation is as simple as people are making it For one people forget Beyonce is a Colombia artist, she isn't independent. So she may not be allowed due to her own contract to contact people who aren't considered owners if a song, inorder to avoid leaks and protect the investment of the label. So even legally she may not be allowed to make that courtesy. The best she might have been able to do was credit Kelis when she didn't need to credit her.

The reasoning that an artist not owning their masters isn't really relevant or is just being used as convenience because Robin S doesn't own her masters either. Totally agree with Kelis! It's called ethics and common courtesy almost in the same way that Whitney Houston acknowledged and attributed to Chaka Khan when she did a cover of I'M EVERY WOMAN. And though Chaka Khan did not write, produced nor owned the song which was written by Ashford and Simpson, it was nonetheless her hit at one time and everybody knows that song is synonymous with Chaka Khan. So it's respect and common artist courtesy. I love Beyonce but she's not invincible, neither her people who handle these things. Most times it is the nature of the business in who handle everything. With all of that being said, there should have been some decency or common courtesy of a phone call or letter or some sort of reached out way to have contacted Kelis's people. And another thing to Q... A lot of the times out of immaturity and ignorance artists do sign bad record deals for being zealous and excitingly blind to what truly is happening only to find out later. And maybe you have no idea what it is like to be on the opposite side as an artist who have written and arranged and composed and produced your own material only to have it stolen and taking advantage of. yes it is quite possible that this kind of thing happened and it just happens to be with somebody that we all love and respect. Don't discount Kelis because she has a valid point in the matter. It has nothing to do with her grief or emotional state, it's business. And just because The Neptunes own the publishing rights does not mean that there is some validity and Truth to what Kelis stated. Producers are still famous for stealing from artists and taking credit without ever being called out on it. But whatever the case, I hope it all works out well for everyone.

According to the writing credits I saw on different platforms, Kelis does NOT have rights to the lyrics or beat so Beyoncé did not have to reach out to her. Beyoncé listed her on the credits, which she didn’t have to do since Kelis doesn’t own her licensing (I know that’s a whole other convo itself); but the fact remains: Kelis was owed nothing yet still got the courtesy of a credit mention. Kelis is entitled to her feelings; yet my issue was that she did it THE NIGHT of the album drop. She should’ve let Beyoncé have her moment free of any drama and then addressed it. If Kelis wanted a phone call, she could’ve addressed this in private w/ Bey. It really didn’t have to be two Black women pitted against each other this way, especially when Pharell seems to be the main issue. Btw, Renaissance is 🔥🔥🔥

It’s not about owning the record. She was in the position unwilling not to own the rights to her music. Not every artist is fortunate like RIHANNA and Beyoncé to own 100% of their masters. Beyoncé or someone could of at least let her know what was going down rather than finding out on the internet. That was such a stab in the back regardless who owns the song. Beyoncé knows what’s up.
