Kelis went through a lot this year, losing her husband and now this, people have their breaking points and I believe this was a Subtle way of addressing the issue! Nobody is above reproach, and she shouldn't be scared to speak how she feels!

She shouldn’t have mentioned Beyoncé’s name at all. Beyonce didn’t steal from her at all. She should have focused on Neptunes. But again, the music was created by Netune, not Kelis. So she doesn’t have any rights to it. She was just the vocalist. The song was intended for Britney but was given to Kelis to sing.

I get Kelis' frustration here. Knowing the machine behind Beyonce and the forethought that goes into everything that she does, it is hard to imagine how this one detail could have been missed. It is good that she is no longer credited in the album. It means that whoever holds the predatory contacts she signed is also not benefiting in the shadows from her work. I think the rhetoric around Beyonce doing this for petty reasons is a little far-fetched. First and foremost, as she said in her album, she is about her bag. She solved a problem in the most cost-effective and efficient way she knew how and, I'm sure, was advised to, the same way she went back to the studio to remove the alleged problematic word. It's old to see people try to pit these two women against each other for entertainment. Kelis is an icon in her own right and the new generation might not know, but she is. Just because you don't know who someone is doesn't mean they don't exist or that you can diminish what they have done. Beyonce continues to break records and set trends. Let the two women remain in their lanes in peace. They are both secure, but now that Kelis has sounded the alarm, the conversation should be focused on just how many artists, women especially, from Kelis' time and after are still beholden to predatory contracts held by musty men! That's what we should be focused on!

Good on Kelis for speaking out - as an illustrator who has had her work stolen and reproduced without my permission/credit/paying me, people expecting me to work for free, older people taking advantage of my age when I was young and just starting out, all that utter bollocks - I totally applaud her for speaking out. NO she should not "just be happy you were on Beyonces album". People always expect creative people to do things for nothing - exposure does not pay the rent, or keep food in your stomach. And just because you are good at what you do - be it music, art, design - does not mean you should give up being compensated for the hours of your time you have spent making said art. I am seriously side-eying the Neptunes/Pharrell. Imagine if you worked a ten hour shift waitressing or at your office and your boss said "oh we're not going to give you what you're owed because you should just be glad you're working here"? Fuck all the way off with your Grandad's spanner! I have had big jobs where the exposure was insane - but did it lead to any actual paid work? Nope. It never does. So huge praise for Kelis for speaking out about this issue, I know the Beyhive gonna bzzzz no matter what haha. But any young creatives reading this, NEVER doubt your worth or time!

I agree with Diane, 24 writers on one song is a lot. What that dream person said doesn't change the fact that it's still strange for it to be that many writers on one song....even with the sampling. Especially since someone in the comments mentioned that the song that was sampled only had 7 writers. If you remove those 7 writers they sampled from the old song, from the 24 writers total, that still leaves 17 writers who wrote on the new song. So still, why so many writers for a song that is probably less than 4 minutes? What the dream said doesn't really hold up, especially the stuff about black people...and about Diane. Diane hasn't had that many writers on her songs, which means more money for her. Honestly, nobody should want that many writers on their song, that just means more people to pay. Then when the time comes around to get those checks for royalties, that's just more people to split the money with. See, there are are all kinds of Royalties: •SongWriter Royalties •Publishing Royalties •Mechanical Royalties Performance Royalties Synchronization (Sync) Royalties Print Music Royalties The royalties for songwriters & publishing are split 50/50. So, that means the songwriter/s....plural, all have to split the 50% share of the money for the song writing. If there are 24 writers on a song, they have to split that 50% share 24 different ways.

Hence all the samples to be REVIVED like Kelis’ career needed to be revived but I’m sure she’ll be blackballed. And to the songwriter Dianne, as an artist, she should know what word play is and if she under the word, she should have an idea as to why all those artists were credited. And I am not a Beyoncé fan but all this drama is ridiculous.

Kelis is her own individual / free spirit . She does not care about what your talking about . She stands true to her morals and authenticity.. having your own mind and frequency means your not moved by others validations to be who you are. That’s courageous, most just follow ..she stood her ground and it was respected . Song was taken off .. 💯✨🤍she should of done nothing else but be herself ..That’s not the meaning of renaissance also . Renaissance was a error where Europe took cultures from China and the Middle East to create a new way of being . Around this time the first gun was created. It took all the culture from the old , morals truth and diminished them . Replacing the samurai with guns. Replacing the swords with guns. It devalues our ancestral cultures for the thrive of a European world and domination. Do your homework ..normally I would not respond however Do you know what your talking about do you have understanding . It means taking others way of being , taking what you want from it and making it into your liking .A colonial mindset .People really go along with things that folks throw out there wow . The sampling excuse does make sense. If you are sampling songs with a handful of writers on each one the result is a lot of writers. Nowadays if you contribute 2 words to a song and a melody for a line you are credited. The music industry has change drastically since Janet. As you can see from all this mess everyone wants a piece of the pie. It is what it is. Don't think they would credit 26 writers if they weren't involved. At least they had the decency to credit them to begin with. This is not something to be pressed over. At all. Would you prefer they remove the 26 writers credits so you don't have to look at it?

No, Kelis directed her energy exactly toward whom she needed to direct it toward. That means equal parts Beyonce AND Pharell. Beyonce is no ingenue, innocent and unaware, a pawn of unscrupulous producers and management. Rather, she is wholly in control of her image and content. And the fact remains that she did not take the time to consult with Kelis. If the Empressive report is true, and Beyonce simply removed Kelis' name from the credits, rather than acknowledge the grievance and issue a mea culpa, it illustrates Beyonce's arrogance and unwillingness to admit an error, which is not cool, at all.

Beyoncé is just protecting her peace lol. It is not commonplace in the industry for artists to get “courtesy calls” from everybody utilizing a song they have zero ownership over. She did the right thing by Kelis with the limited power she had in that situation. Also, this went way further than not getting a call. Especially from somebody she has no personal relationship with. This was a manifestation of hurt, pain, and bitterness from being done dirty. The only thing she did wrong was directing all of that anger towards Bey and coming for her character and integrity when she should’ve focused on the people who actually did her dirty. Although Kelis says she’s happy with Bey removing the interpolation and her credit, I can’t help but feel she’s not as unbothered as she’s trying to seem. Certain demographics always throw shade and then hide their hands and play victim when they get called out for it lol. As someone who genuinely/authentically enjoys music; especially hip-hop; I've always had a great deal of respect for Pharrell/The Neptunes' ear and their production which has been cemented in the black music culture, but I have to say that ever since this whole discrepancy with Bey/Kelis; I'm really disappointed in them for how they treated Kelis. Like I don't get why it is so hard to be fair...? Like all y'all had to do was make music; and get money together. They were great collaborators; and I hate that Kelis suffered at the hands of his/their greed. However, I do think that there is some shared responsibility because I think that it goes back to artists (in this instance, Kelis) needing to be vigilant and intentional in seeking professional guidance when signing any form of contracts/negotiations. I don't care who the person is to you; when money is involved (especially large amounts); I think that people's true character shows. But, I also get that she probably truly trusted that he had her best interests at heart as well. Like it's crazy that she hasn't been able to eat off of what were her/their biggest records. Lesson learned.

I think it definitely makes sense for Diane to question it. I believe the song on Beyoncé's album that Diane was referring to in her tweet was Alien Superstar, which has 24 credited writers. I looked on Wikipedia and only 7 of the credited writers are from the sampled songs. So even if we ignored the samples, that still leaves 17 writers on one song which is extremely high. I haven't listened to Alien Superstar, but I write myself and it definitely seems ridiculous to have so many people on one song. For people who don't write, imagine doing a group project (at school or work) with 17 people including yourself. It just doesn't make sense. If you wanted a good song, you shouldn't need 17 writers on it. Was the tweet shady? Sure. But for The Dream to make it seem just like it had to do with being a "black" thing and crediting "black youth" makes it seem like Diane had an ignorant agenda, which isn't really true. Diane absolutely had the right (since she rarely co-writes songs) to call it out, despite being shady.

I think it’s extremely unfair how when it’s Beyoncé we are talking about all rationality and equality goes out the window. Kelis was rude asf by calling Beyoncé stupid and demonic, at the end of the day Beyoncé is human and it’s crazy how ppl expect her to allow and receive disrespect without feeling a kind of way about it. And I actually commend Beyoncé for never taking to the media when there are issues with other artists, in the music industry all artists aren’t buddy buddy so it’s odd Kelis would expect some personal call and a bouquet of flowers over some lalala’s in a song that she didn’t even write produce or own which is a problem she only can take up with the Neptune’s. Beyoncé is arguably the most popular and revered black artist/figure for over the past ten years but it’s seems as more time goes on it’s most accepted to break down a black woman of Beyoncés stature then to uplift and celebrate. I just love the way Bey moves. It’s Bossy. Classy. There’s a way to handle business and she did what had to be done. I like the project more and more every day. She solved the problem. Emotions have no place where bottom lines are concerned. Certain folks just get carried away with their emotions.

I agree. Everyone was ready to jump on the Beyonce hate train the moment Kelis spoke out, but honestly, how Kelis handled this was poor. I understand her frustrations wholeheartedly, but she should have directed that energy solely on Pharrell. Besides, Beyonce did credit her and made the courtesy call of removing the sample from the album when she saw that Kelis was not happy about it. Now Kelis is still insulting her and it’s not a classy move at all. Like I said, I am not discrediting her feelings at all, but she could’ve approached this in a better way.

I think it's a blow to Kelis. It could have open even more doors for her. Sometimes, we let our emotions and entitlement get the best of us. Beyonce went about it the right way by getting it released and approved with Pharrell, the owner of the song. Kelis did not own the music so why would she need to clear anything with her. Especially, when it appears they didn't even have the type of relationship where she would just call her up. After this passes in a week or so who is going to be talking about Kelis? Who was talking about her before this? Sometimes we shoot our on selves in the foot. What a dope move it would have been if Beyonce had plans to bring Kelis out during a performance of the song? But we will never know now.
@mikalg.7562

I do believe Kelis came out discussing the Milkshake scandal before she actually got a chance to hear the song and may have thought a larger portion of her work was being used. She mentioned fans congratulating her on her “new collaboration with Beyoncé,” As parts of the album were leaked and you could see the writing credits of each song on Tidal long before the album was released. So I could see that upsetting and confusing her. But I think Kelis jumped the gun with her anger assuming that Beyoncé and Pharrell maliciously sampled her with out asking her because…legally they can. Unfortunately her ownership of her music was not handled correctly so it would appear that bigger artists in the industry are pretty much being petty bullies. But any instrumental elements used in the song would rightfully so be the ownership of Pharrell since indeed he did produce milkshake. And as for those la la la’s, barley noticeable and it’s up in the air if that was even her idea or the Neptune’s during the original recording process. I just think any dissatisfaction towards Beyoncé catches flames immediately on social media and Kelis knew her voice would be heard if she mentioned her, but should Pharrell seriously keep hands off sampling certain projects he produced just because Kelis doesn’t want it touched? It’s his work too. And we know how secretive Beyoncé can be when in the creative process. The less people that know what she’s working on the better for her. But the whole situation is unfortunate.
