I like San Diego. I have always found the Dodgers a bit arrogant. They were basically coronated as World Series Champions because if the signing of Shhoei Ohtani. And I had a problem with that. Games are never won on paper. but on the field.. The Dodger have had suspect starting pirching all year. If their bats are not hot, any reliance on pitching is iffy at best. Freddie Freeman, great as he is, just cannot go and is a liability right now. Manny Muchado loves his role as villian and is a lightning rod for inspiration.. The Padres exhibit a solidarity that the Dodgers do not have.. With the Dodgers, Ohtani is always the "straw who stirs the drink", to borrow a quote from Reggie jackson. With he Padres, the whole team takes turns stirring it. Blessings to all

Throughout the entire season, the Dodgers played mediocre teams. Every time they had a monster game, it was against the Colorado Rockies another team below .500 ….. now they have some REAL competition and they can’t keep up. The Dodgers will probably get to Cease in game 4, but they probably won't be able to hit Darvish in game 5 if it gets that far. The series isn't over, but if game 5 is anything like game 2, this series is essentially over even if the Dodgers pound the Padres and don't give up 10 runs themselves. But they have given up 5, 10, and 6 runs each game this series respectively. The Dodgers pitching staff and defense have been a disappointment this series.

Respectfully, the analysis here of Machado potentially “interfering” with Freeman’s throw to second is, IMO, incorrect. The relevant rule is MLB Rule 6.01(a)(10) which provides, in pertinent part: “It is interference by . . . a runner when: . . . [h]e . . . Intentionally interferes with a thrown ball.” At the time that Manny adjusted his path running to 2nd Base, there was no “thrown” ball. Freeman was in the act of fielding the ball and preparing to throw. Freeman was stuck because he was on his knees and could not adjust to give himself a better throwing lane. Machado could not have intended to interfere with a thrown ball because the ball had not been thrown, his back was to the fielder, and he never saw the “thrown” ball. The most that could be said was that Machado intentionally “interfered” with Freeman’s throwing lane by guessing where the ball would likely travel given Freeman’s position. ARod’s suggestion that Freeman had a “right” to his throwing lane is just not a thing. Nor was his example about a runner running to first being plunked by a catcher pertinent. With a runner advancing to first on a dropped third strike or a bunted or short-hit ball, the catcher plunking the runner is only an out if the runner is running outside of the chalked runner’s lane. Indeed, that is why catchers are not taught just to automatically plunk the runner. If the runner is in the runner’s lane, catchers are taught to sprint wide to create a throwing lane. Conversely, runners are taught to try to block that throwing lane to force the catcher to make a bad throw by running inside of the runner’s lane. (If they get plunked, they’re out; but more often than not, the catcher will just make a bad throw or delay his throw trying to create a better throwing lane.) Think about an analogous situation with a runner on third. Runners are taught to take their leads in foul territory (so that the runner is not in a position to be called out for being hit by a fair ball), but are taught to come back to third after a pitch in fair territory SO AS TO BLOCK THE CATCHER’S THROWING LANE on a pick-off attempt. If ARod’s interpretation of the rule were correct, all a catcher would need to do with a runner going back to third in fair territory would be to plunk the runner and argue that the runner intentionally interfered with the throw simply because he was in fair territory. Again, that is not the rule because, like Machado tonight, the intent of the runner is not to interfere with a THROWN ball, but to “interfere” with a fielder’s throwing lane before the throw is made to either make it more difficult for the fielder to make a good throw or to force the fielder to adjust his throwing lane so as to delay the throw. Perfectly legal. Otherwise, fielders should just start plunking runners rather than throwing to fielders at bases.

We have “infield fly ball” rule in order to prevent infielders dropping the ball intentionally to get 2 outs. In the same spirits, we should make the rule that runners must run straight to the next base without deviating running path. If not, runners should be automatic out. I don’t think Manny’s running is a smart play, but play at little league level. I don’t want to see this kind of play to alter the course of game at this level. For baseball God’s sake, this is MLB, the highest level of baseball, this type of play should be banned altogether !
