The difference now is the rules and style of play have made it a poor television product, and players have a level of power to force trades that made it harder for small markets to keep stars. They’ve tried to address the latter, but they’re still reluctant to throttle back the rules being skewed towards the offense. They’ll likely cap three point attempts per game, move the 3 point line back, and/or eliminate the corner 3’s , but they’ll wait until the networks complain to them…..not fans.

The biggest issue to me that nobody is talking about is how the NBA (and MLB, NFL, NHL, etc) have priced out the real fans. Pro sports is now just another luxury for the rich, but they arent the ones buying jerseys, merchandise, etc. Its just the thing to do/place to be. Local teams aren't on local tv. You buy league pass and they black out the local team(s) and national tv games. They've made it a pain in the ass to watch. Why can't I pay X amount and stream all the Lakers (or X team) games? I find younger kids don't care about viewing sports as much as gen x and early millennial ( and boomers ) , and the older guys like me ( 45 ) find the salaries repulsive and some viewership is lost. The avg Joe could relate to these guys before. We all played the sports and could appreciate how phenomenal these pros are at their sports, so we were fans. We watched them toil on the fields and rings and rinks and gridiron. We supported them ( the athletes ) because they were like us, blue collar and hustled. We didn't care that they made more money - they deserved it. But now we're approaching Billion dollar contracts. We can't relate anymore. This is too much. So more and more people ( like me ) are finding other forms of entertainment.

@justinwinston9929Ай бұрын
beyond all the things discussed that are hurting the nba, let me add many casual fans don’t look at nba players as tough. the constant flopping , the constant acting like you were run over by a truck and rolling on the floor to get foul calls. lebron james, one of the faces of the league is on the floor in some form of false pain every game. how many times we gotta watch the guy lay of the floor for 5 minutes covering his face because he got hit on the tip of his nose. never any blood, never a scratch, but rolls around in agony to jump up a shoot free throws. these guys are movie stars with acting some of them do. now add load management and constant injuries that keep players out makes them look like athletes stealing checks and public resents that. people don’t question the toughness or heart of nfl players but they do with nba. this is why so many fans still talk about 80s and 90s nba, people viewed the players as tough in a physical league. now we got 7 footers that won’t touch the paint and stand at the 3 point arch looking to jack a three pointer.

I’m a casual so speaking from the casual side, it’s not about 3 pointers. They don’t properly market the up and coming players so the avg casual don’t know much about them to get hype to watch them play. Meanwhile on the other side of the spectrum the ones they do continue to market are old, always hurt, and on middling teams. Then to cherry on top, they started marketing someone’s son who isn’t good at all and shouldn’t even be in the league. It’s just a trash product now. They don’t look like they even really wanna be out there. The league needs to ease up a bit on the defensive rules as well so we can see teams start playing more competitive defense. Not bringing it back to where teams were only scoring 60 points a game but gah lee. Meet us in the middle.

It has more to do than just Curry and the 3's. It has to do with Adam Silver removing defense and the competitiveness of the game. It has to do with LeBron not joining the dunk contest, making other stars not want to join. It has to do with LeBron joining other stars removing competition. It has to do with these sudden rule changes on taking 3 steps is not a travel, because it's a gather step. Load management is also a huge problem. You pay to see a game to only find out that your favorite player is not playing. There is no difference from watching the NBA or watching the Globetrotters.

Dudes, for me the simplest explanation is that the regular season isn't worth ish. 70+ games and most of the teams still qualify for the playoffs. NFL has fewer games, each means more. In soccer overseas each game is worth points and the "playoffs" is a whole other league which is the champions league (super fkn exciting) thats basically an international competition from the best performers in each of Europe's bigger leagues. Fix the NBA regular season, it's as simple as that.
