What ruined the NBA is, not only everyone just shooting fifty 3s per game (even if forty of them are bricks).... but also adding a 3 second rule on D (which completely removes the 5 from the equation which makes it far easier to drive).... Removing hand checking.... Giving guys the lane or they go to the foul line.... Allowing players to carry, travel, and basically play street ball.... Allowing players to clown around during All Star games and not even try.... and ZERO player loyalty because they all just follow the money and chase records/championships. THAT, in turn, eliminated rivalries.... The absolute best thing the NBA had going for them were rivalries because rivalries creates drama and adds excitement.... The Celtics/Lakers, Bulls/Pistons, etc. rivalries are over because nobody is loyal to their team these days. The 70's, 80's, and 90's was REAL basketball.... Today, it's just who can shoot the deepest and who can score the most points.... I'll tell you one thing, it's far easier to score when you don't have a center sitting in the paint waiting for you (who is also allowed to touch you without it being a foul)..... If a dude breathes in the wrong direction, the offensive player goes to the line. That's insane.... Basketball is not apples to apples anymore, yet we allow records to be broken and comparing players to past generations, even though they changed all the rules.... It's ridiculous. Once you change the rules of the game, you change the game period....

Watching threes upon threes is indeed boring as shit, but, can we also acknowledge that the showboating and arrogance of these players might also have something to do with the decline in viewership? It isn't just one thing, it's all of it. The crooked officiating, the half-assed defense and one-dimensional offense that's identical on every team, the entitlement and showboating of the players, the sitting out for load management or not playing any kind of meaningful defense because they "need to conserve their energy for offense" and every other excuse made for some "superstar" and his lack of effort on one end... The league just sucks in every way, and these players don't have any respect for who came before them or for the next generation of ballers that they're leaving the league in worse shape for.

And then you have the arrogant side with all their trashtalking, one-dimensional playstyle like you said. they are not exceptional or great, they just play it for the easy money. the refs are even worse. the players think they can be Curry or Kobe without hard work and only with their talent, the coaches think they all have curry and thompson in their roster and let them all shoot 50 3s with like 10% scoring. Thats bad and boring. We need a change inside the NBA from the ground. Better coaches, better player and way better refs. A new rulebook with more strict rules, penaltys if refs ignor or abuse them. Coaches need get punished if they do season over season the same shit playstyle their team is not build for. I'm far from being an NBA expert but what I've noticed over the past few years are: Coaches not coaching effectively during games, Referees that make bad calls or no calls too consistently, too many 3-point shot attempts and players not playing to their strengths. I understand those are broad statements, but I don't watch full games anymore like I used to back in the day. I very much enjoy watching highlight reels of Steph or any player that performs well, but I wonder how the game would change if there was no more 3-point line. Half-court shots made would be 4-points. If there was 1-more referee or an automated AI supported referee system. Also, it would be great if players, referees and coaches when making stupid blatant mistakes would be put in a "time-out" box like in the NHL. Sub in the next person to help out when that happens. Most NBA fans usually agree upon the most "entertaining era" being the 2010's. The reason NBA fans agree about the 2010's. Not because the three pointer was balanced or defence was "good" but because of the Spurs vs Heat rivarly and Warriors vs Cavs rivarly. That's the only reason. The NBA now doesn't have a dynasty, there's nobody to pay attention to. It's like the 90's without the Bulls, 80's without the Celtics and Lakers, 2000's without the Spurs and Lakers, that's the reason we don't pay attention, anybody can win. The warriors vs mavericks record breaking 3 point game was probally the most payed attention and talked about regular game in years. If the 3 point birage was so hated, this game shouldnt even be thought about after one night. It's not Curry's fault, it's not the 3 points fault, it's the lack of dynastys.

It’s lame and kills the flow of the game.

Jeremy Lin got me into the NBA and when you brought up Lin vs Kobe it gave me a lot of nostalgia. Basketball used to be full of passion back in the days, the fans live for these individual battles where they would go at each other to prove themselves, these days, players would dodge those match ups by sitting out, or they don't even take on the challenges anymore to play against each other. Their plays carry very little pride with them, or they never cared in the first place. Steph Curry isn't to blame for the failings of today's NBA, 2016 Golden State Warriors or 2016 in general was one of the most fun season I've had watching NBA, while it's true that they shot a lot of 3 pointers that season, but they were also not a one dimensional team. They have 3 point shooters like Steph and Klay, they have midrange shooter like Shaun Livingston, they have inside presence like Draymond and Bogut, and they played defense. I still remember Steph and James Harden had a really potent little floater game back in the days, it was fun to watch players having so many moves and was actually skilled at playing the game, it wasn't just getting past a screen and chucking up 3 pointers all night. Today's players just look very low energy, very lazy, it felt like that when they chuck up 3 pointers. The game right now feels very one dimensional. It doesn't matter how many sets of plays you run, the gist of that play was basically getting past a screen or multiple screens to get either the shooter or the roller open, it's the same thing every time. It's boring to watch. You also can't be physical with any players, which means you can play defense at all. The game does not look very appealing right now.

Here are a few rule change ideas that could make the NBA more appealing and bring variety to the game: 1. Limit the Number of 3-Point Attempts per Team Teams could be restricted to a certain number of 3-point attempts per quarter or game. This would encourage more diverse offensive strategies, like post play or mid-range shooting. 2. Shorten the Shot Clock Reducing the shot clock from 24 to 20 seconds would increase the pace of the game, leading to faster decision-making and potentially more exciting plays. 3. Introduce a 4-Point Line Adding a 4-point line further out from the current 3-point arc could reward sharpshooters while making 3-pointers feel less dominant in the overall strategy. Also add a small limit on the number of attempts. 4. No Defensive 3-Second Violation Allowing defenders to stay in the paint longer could bring back more physicality and help balance the offense-defense dynamic. 5. Lower the Foul Limit for Players Reducing the number of fouls a player can commit before fouling out (from 6 to 5, for example) might discourage overly aggressive play and create more exciting matchups. 6. Changes to Overtime Adopt a “golden basket” rule in overtime (first team to score wins) or introduce a timed overtime period that emphasizes fast, high-stakes play.

There wouldn’t be as many 3’s if you could play defense
@rocketfighter818 күн бұрын
The only way to defend the 3 is by sticking close to the shooter at the arc. This leaves the lane wide open for drivers. If you watch NBA games the defenders have to defend the lane too so they play half way, resulting in open 3's.

3s stretch the defense tho thats why its played differently
@HEALTHANDWEALTHCHANNEL-h6o16 күн бұрын
Players shoot threes, even if they miss all of them, because less contact means less injuries, and standing further away from opponent's basket means less running back on defense. And coaches can't sub out these players, because the entire generation of players play like that!
@ReconciledByFaith17 күн бұрын
1) Move the 3 point line back farther 2) Empower defensive players by reintroducing handchecking and not calling soft fouls 3) Weaken offensive players by calling travels on moves that used to be travels and actually enforcing moves still considered travels today 4) Do things to encourage competitiveness and passion 4a) Don't call weak techs for things like finger waving after dunks 4b) incentivize players to play hard in regular season games. The easiest way is by decreasing the number of games for more rest and practice (but they'd rather have a worse product than less money, so prob a no-go there) 4c) decrease advertisements, external entertainment, and breaks in play so players and viewers can get in rhythm and absorbed into the game But honestly, i don't think the NBA will ever be the same again because culture and people are changing. Young men don't have the same competitive, tough mindset they used to have in general, and NBA players in particular are so wealthy now that their lifestyle and celebrity status changes them.
@SanctumROTMG16 күн бұрын
moving it further back tho will just make the defense stretch out further also there wont be much space on the corner 3s
@ReconciledByFaith16 күн бұрын
@SanctumROTMG I don't think we can adjust the corner 3, that's true, but backing up the rest of the line should keep more players from shooting 3s in the first place due to the lower percentages and encourage more 2s. Though honestly it'd be easier to just nerf 3s to where they're worth 2.5 points, but they'll probably never do that.
@RRRRRRRRR3314 күн бұрын
I agree 100% the issue is not only the 3pt play style, pretty much everything related to the NBA is tarnished. Rule changes are easy to implement, but the soft mentality is affecting the players ever since "the decision", 12+ years of reinforcement, it will be pretty hard to change their minds and attitude. Either way, basketball is in such a weird state nowadays, bizarre players like Wemby looks dominant among the weak and soft, but it's not really entertaining. Jokic is very entertaining, same goes for Giannis, but their respective role players are very boring to watch, etc.. There's no more superstar appeal, no Jordan, Kobe, Shaq, Iverson, etc... If you want to "blame" a player for ruining the NBA, Steph has a little percentage of the blame, LeBron is the major source of negativity, when you have the next superstar acting like a weakling coward, literally acting the GM of the team (no player in NBA history had more help and entitlement than LeBron), can you really blame other players for taking the easy road? And now the masses are finally realizing the obvious, sports are all about competition, not "super teams" playing for worthless championships in the weakest era ever since the 70s

there are many reason why the NBA is down in viewership : There are "no star anymore", the refs think they are the main character in the game, there are no rivality between teams, no real energy... It's not just the 3 point revolution, it's deeper than that

they need to make the court bigger and the 3 pointer further. NBA needs to make the game more challenging and force teams to be more physical. If you make the 3 point line 30 feet, coaches are going to change the game plan more for interior plays. Fix the refs too and then maybe the NBA can start improving.
@JohnMezzo18 күн бұрын
Celtics average 50+ 3PA per game? That's wild. In 2K, even when I edit the coach, players, and playbook to be a 3 point focused team, the CPU still refuses to attempt 40 3 pointers consistently.

Easy to fix, if a team misses three 3-pointers in a row, subtract a point... for every consecutive one after that, keep subtracting 1 point.
@tjv292416 күн бұрын
I would just limit the amount of attempts you can do in a game. Like you get 30 attempts to shoot 3pt shots. Any shot taken beyond the 3pt line after your 30 attempts will only count as 2pts if made.

Im a self proclaimed old head. i grew up watching late 80s and 90s basketball. The issue today is that not every team has a steph curry. so then you now have all these horrible shooters thinking they can hit 3s from about midcourt. and they cant. plus with all these 3s, the physicality of the game is almost not existant. long gone are the days driving to the rim and dunking on someones face like jordan or shaq would do. now im not saying it doesnt happen in todays game, but its an extreme rarity. plainly put, id rather watch something else than these teams jacking up 50 three pointers and no one playing defense.

A big reason viewership is down: PEOPLE ARE BROKE and need to bust their ass ten times harder and don't have the time they used to. So they just watch the highlights of the game on youtube. We are being overworked and underpaid in a fast paced world and have to settle for the highlights so we can get the best of the game without using time we no longer can afford. It's not the game. It's not the shot. Step back and see the whole forest instead of over analyzing the trees.

The fact is players are coddled like never before and players don't get coached hard anymore. 20-30 years ago a player would get benched by pullling up from 3 early in the shot clock or taking a 27+ footer. Soft coaching has contributed to this problem too and coaches seem unwilling to put a hard brake on players for all the numerous or poor 3 pointers.

I don't love the 3 at all but my biggest issue with the league is lack of diversity in playing style. When I was growing up don Nelson mavericks shot 3s dantoni suns shot a lot of 3s I didn't care because not everyone was doing it. If a few teams shoot a lot of 3s then fine but when all 30 teams are doing the same thing playing the same way. The game has become less interesting.

You finally got it. Nowadays, all the kids on the open court want to shoot long-distance shots before they have a real shooting style. Not only is the game of basketball being lost, but so is the love of people for the sport. Thanks for reminding me of Jeremy's game. I told someone about him, but none of them had watched it. As a philosophical point, if you always try to stay away from the arc, you will not only end up missing 3-pointers, but you will also lose all the points, assists, creative play, sharing with your teammates and all the spectators, and with basketball itself. Remember what Michael Jordan (a real basketball player) said: "If you stay true to the game, the game will be true to you, just like life is." Best regards, wishing you a healthy and happy new year 😊 To Everyone Note: I was able to write this message to you because of the love and passion of the real people mentioned below for basketball, and my own love for the sport. Stephen Curry came to the NBA at the right time. NBA had been building this style of play before Curry came into the league. The Warriors and Stephen Curry took that opportunity and created what the NBA wanted for years, a play style that caters to the guard more than the big man.

If you are a decent shooter, 3-point attempts are an easy way out. You can disregard strategizing yourself & your teammates on driving inwards as well as disregard the opponent's defense strategies, which lessens both mental and physical fatigues. A possible solution to revert the current meta is by punishing failed 3-point attempts. Some crazy ideas on top of me head are reverting back the nature of defense-favored NBA rules, making the hoop smaller, or add a new rule about not being able to hog the ball outside the 3-point line for certain amount of time (like the 3-second paint rule but for the offense's 3-point line).

Slide at 1:08 shows why the NBA is boring now. What would happen if an NBA 2K game is connected to a reinforcement learning agent? Would the RL agent just shoot 3's and paint baskets? If the answer from this experiment is yes, then it confirms that the rules will make players gravitate to this pattern, and that is time to change the rules.

They way to fix 3 point shooting and make the game better to watch is have a variable 3 point shooting light. The LED light in on the 3 point line and the backboard. When the light it on, a three point shot can be made. When the light is off, only 2 point shots. Max out the time the light is on for 25 minute game play. It goes on and off randomly during game play. When the light is off, it will force teams to play closer to the rim. Since it is random, no team can plan for a three point shot. The teams will just be guessing when it might come on for them.

Steph has actually kept the game alive. In my opinion, what’s killing the game was mentioned around 4 min into the video, just to start. About 90%+ of players are heavily overpaid. They walk into a team with a multi million dollar contract, to sit on the sidelines with their phones. No work ethic, no heart, no creativity, just shoot the shot for the highlight reel, and keep shooting until it goes in.. who cares about the team… the game has become a fashion show and a shoe deal, a flop fest, and a don’t touch the guy with the ball cause his nails are wet calls.. Jordan, Bird, Kobe, Allen, Miller.. etc were hitting 3s LONG before Curry. What was different then, was the blood, sweat and tears, those guys left on the floor each game.. if a 3 was taken and missed, you had the whole team going in for a rebound… now days, the balls is up, the whole team is already back past the half court.. players are “resting”( popovich-thanks) games. Can’t put a hand up, cause Harden will lift his arm into it and get to the free throw line.. what a stupid rule! I’ll just stick to college ball.

Steph, the rules to benefit offense over defense, players having too much power to change personnel and staff, load management, lack of playing hard in general, players afraid of getting hurt, players being glass fragile, Adam silver and players cupcaking it up and leaving the second things don’t go their way…that’s essentially what offed the nba! That and them playing games like pick ups instead of treating each game like it matters!! Nba should just drop 20 games and see how that works!!
