You do't need to wait long for the files. There's a way to let the NLE handle debayering and massively improve transcode times. You'll get 9fps transcode using this method. Set Debayering: *None* Fix Focus Pixels: *Auto* Chroma Smooth: *Off* Dual ISO: depends on you Do not do any adjustments after this. You'll do those in the NLE using RAW controls. Export as *CDNG uncompressed* for the fastest results and best looking footage. *CDNG Lossless* for smaller more managable files.

Great video as usual. 1. Depending on the firmware and mode, you'll find that you won't get pink frames. I've never seen the white dots issue before. Unfortunately practice is the only way eosm users get to work out its quirks. 2. Totally agree the workflow is insane. I personally put up to 8 hour in for a 2 to 3 minute video. The benefits of this process is you learn a lot about processing and editing video. 3. Agree again - this is a camera for someone who wants to learn. ML isn't a piece of software for a first time camera user. When people dive in, I always recommend Dannes build and suggest new users, use the 1080p only until they get used to the interface. And to be fair once you have a camera work flow you very rarely change it. 4. Not quite correct, Magic Lantern changes one small part of the camera code and this is only to allow magic lantern to run from the sdcard. A software brick can happen on rare occasion, but a hardware brick is very unlikely. Software bricks can usually be fixed. In general I'd say to anyone who wants an easy automatic filming process, don't chose magic lantern raw. But if they're willing to learn, they will learn a lot about the film process, skills like pulling focus and insights into how actual real movies are created.

You don`t have to shoot RAW to enjoy the many features of Magic Lantern. Clean uncompressed hdmi output is great for greensceen color keying. The 3x crop triples your focal length without light loss. Focus peaking/stacking , false colors, histograms, audio meters and on and on. Expensive pro features for free. What`s not to like ?

I've been working with Magic lantern for a few years now. Shot a whole music video with it on my 5dMkiii. Not easy, not for beginners. Need a fast computer and tons of storage. But if you get into it, then the MLV app is terrific. Convert to CDNG and then take it into DaVinci resolve to maximise the Raw video colours that you have captured. The 12-14 bit colour depth and richness + highlight roll off etc, you can never go back to baked in profiles.

Great video. Solid points that newbies should keep in mind when considering this literal Pocket cinema camera! But correct me if I'm wrong, but your last point on the installation of ML... I believe it is NOT installed in the camera. The software actually runs off the SD Card. ML folder has a boot code that tells the camera to upload those files before loading the Camera's OS. So it's basically like booting another OS from an external disk. With that said, there are warnings about ML causing some issues with cameras such as causing overheating and what not. Thanks for your video. FYI, in the future I'll be uploading my work flow with my M1 Mac mini and Davinci Resolve.

The issues you given are no surprise. A lot of the problems (the white dots are "hot pixels" -- not uncommon on sensors) are dealt with by camera firmware, which you are bypassing with Magic Lantern. Same with color shifts from various causes. This is why "manufacturer sourced firmware" saves time and generally does a better job. You might be able to get a 4K used early model Panasonic for a bit more. The overall results will probably be better with the Panny, and with less corrective work. I ended up with Panasonic and Sony for 4K. I still use Canons for FHD.

well this information is useful if you are expecting to use the full potencial of the camera the first day, is a teacher camera, once you know how to use it you can make great videos with it, I used this camera in many paid jobs and never let me down, I recently did a reel using shoots from this camera and a black magic pocket 6k and many people cant tell the diference, so I HIGHLY recomend this beast if you want to start learning about raw workflow.

yup and it wont break your camera lol. I can put a regular sd card in mine and record in h264 8 bit as well. And it looks fantastic.

White dots is debayering thing. You can literaly click some buttons in the raw section of the MLVplayer thing and it deals with that...

You have to find the settings that work for your selection of Eos M equipment and stick to it. Don't mess around with it. Find a youtuber (like Zeek) who shares their settings if you like their selection and stick to it. You can be a beginner but stick to the basics like that.

Good vid, I share your feelings, I've uninstalled Magic Lantern from my Canon EOS M, now just using the basic Canon settings with Cinestyle, which captures extra dynamic range. I couldn't really get the results I wanted with ML, you know, that iconic cinematic look you get from an Arri / Red / Blackmagic, something like you see in the film Rust Creek on Netflix. Too many crashes and sketchy results. If you had to use just the basic settings, what settings would you go for? I use 1920x1080@24, Cinestyle @ 0,-4,0,0, Manual Focus, Auto Exposure (but locked with the *), External Mic (Boya BY-MM1) and a tripod where possible possible. I then colour grade it in Movavi using the Drama LUT and finally I've created my own LUT which adjusts Brightness (40), Contrast (20), Saturation (1.25), lower the Highlights (-30), up the Gamma (1.15), lower the Shadows (-20), and up the Hue (3).

Wow thanks for this - I did give up on the EOS-M for a Lumix G7 as my b-cam to my BMPCC. I only used the cinestyle too. I recently dug it out though as I'm going to use it next month on a short as a 'C-cam' (essentially just to catch reaction shots on it) so I'll try those settings as I also edit on Movavi!

I have a video on my channel that helps explain how to simplify the workflow for ML a bit. 1. Use Dannes build (no issues with pink frame or focus dots or white flecks) 2. Export in CDNG lossless (faster, smaller and better quality) 3. Setup presets for colour correction to get to a baseline quality and tweak from there 4. When exporting in CDNG, use multiple MLVapp windows and export simultaneously, one window per thread in your system is max I'll go (so if you have 12 core cpu, 12 windows with MLVapp max, i'd advise leaving 2 or 3 cores so that you can use your computer at the same time). Since CDNG export is single threaded, exporting different clips from different instances of MLV app is going to speed up this section of your workflow very quick (if you guys want, I can create a quick tutorial on this, nothing complicated cuz I got too many assignments right now) 5. If working on a large project, use proxies, like rn I'm working on a doc and have ~700gb of footage. I'm creating proxies and editing off those

As far as this not being for beginners... I disagree. I bought the t3i when it came out and hacked it with magic lantern. It was a great learning experience. This isn't meant to replace your S1h, but to really squeeze out some juicy color information. You cannot beat it at the price.

Hey congrats on the other vid doing so well👌🏾 I learned everything I know about camera's from ml & eos-m, I actually think it's a great teacher. Also, the file is on the SD card.... you're not installing the software on camera...just a small file that tells the camera to boot from the memory card. Pink frames are quite easy to avoid. Finally, there's many options to convert... CDNG is super fast.

Can you preview what you' ve shot with the EOS M and Magic Lantern? I have heard that there is no footage playback with ML from the camera itself you actually have to take the camera home and convert the footage on your computer, to see everything you've shot for the first time.. this is almost the same as shooting on 16 mm film and having to get it developed to watch dailies.. for the extremely independent ultra low budget filmmakers that would be using this camera, that would seem to be an immediate deal breaker.. you don't necessarily need to review your footage if you're just filming beautiful shots of waterfronts or beautiful forests and trees.. but when you start shooting a narrative movie with actors, lines, and actors needing to hit marks, etc, being able to immediately review what you've JUST shot to make sure you got it, has become an indispensable part of modern filmmaking... please confirm if this is correct or not, regarding playback of footage on the camera itself
