British Army Royal Gurkha Rifles vs U.S. Marines - Mock Battle between U.S Marines and Allies
British Army Royal Gurkha Rifles, Lithuanian forces and U.S. Marines from the Black Sea Rotational Force conduct Exercise Saber Strike at the Pabrade Training Area, Lithuania, June 9, 2015. The allies coordinated multipronged attacks on enemy positions during the exercise More than 7,000 service members from NATO and participating nations will join in Saber Strike exercises across Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Poland between June 8-19. Approximately 3,000 service members are currently locked in a series of highly-realistic training scenarios with their U.S. Marine partners in Lithuania.
The Royal Gurkha Rifles (RGR) is a rifle regiment of the British Army, forming part of the Brigade of Gurkhas. Unlike other regiments in the British army, soldiers are recruited from Nepal, which is neither a dependent territory of the United Kingdom nor a member of the Commonwealth. Their motto is: Better to die than live a coward.

I'm ex British Army and have done exercises with both Gurkhas and US Marines. I would happily fight alongside either, however people shouldn't try to compare them as they have different fighting styles. Use the Marines if you want to flatten an objective, use the Gurkhas if you need a more harassing/guerilla style. Both are very good at what they do.

Isn't the definition of guerrilla fighting independent fighting small against larger group with unorthodox tactics? And I think gurkhas definitely has advantage in stealthy communication. They aren't even scolded in training. And I'm not sure if the regular us army gets more night training than gurkhas.

Sujan Rai Quick notice Sujan, to be a "Royal" Gurkha you must actually have been enlisted as a soldier within the regiment. You can be known as a Gurkha if you are from their mountain region but other than that you are just Nepalese. Royal comes into play when you are enlisted for the British Armed Forces. Here are some examples from the UK: Royal Artillery Regiment Royal Marine Regiment Royal Signals Etc etc The point of having Royal in the name is to signify that it is under service to the crown aka the royal family. During ww2, on a plain over SE Asia, British captain told the Gurkha soldiers that they will jump from the plane at a designated area. One of the Gurkha soldier politely asked the captain if the plain could fly lower if they are to jump from the plane. Respect to the Gurkhas they make Britain proud and some amazing Victoria Cross stories, one Gurkha apparently had the misfortune of losing two friends against the Japanese then being stuck in a trench fighting by himself with no support, they kept throwing grenades in and he kept throwing them back, eventually one went off in his hand and took out one side of his body, that didn't stop him either, he kept fighting with his left hand and teethe to reload a bolt action rifle, when the reinforcements got to his trench they were expecting to find him dead but he was alive with about 40 something dead enemy outside his trench, if that don't say Gurkhas are hard as nails I dunno what does.

In WW2 a Gurkha got left behind in a failed attack on a Japanese held island as they thought he was dead along with the rest of his platoon who were ambushed by the Japanese. 4 months later a mixture of Australian and US forces tried again to take the island only this time they found it completely empty apart from one Gurkha. He killed every Japanese soldier on the island and took their supplies and ammo however when he ran out of ammo he killed them with his khukuri and lived off the islands fruit and hunted wild animals along with using a river as his water supply. I served in the Scots guards and our training centre ITC Helles barracks was alongside the gurkhas. Our down time: Drink, play pool, eat, sleep, go to the pub. Gurkhas down time: Train, Exercise,, study, Repeat. Their discipline is unmatched and much respected.

Gurkhas are selected very carefully. I think it was about 2,000 young and healthy men came forward to join the Regiment and out of those 2,000. Only 300 were selected. Hand picked, the best of the best.

My dad was on exercise in the late 60's, he was in the Royal Artillery. He fell asleep at his battery and had his boot laces cut by a Gurkha. My dad said that it was their way of letting him know they were there. He didn't fall asleep at his battery again.

An uncle fought in Italy. He said they were told to tie their boots a certain way. Gurkhas would patrol, silently crawl up behind a soldier and feel for the boot laces. If tied wrong out came the kukri. He also said they would come up to a German trench, and sometimes kill every second soldier, or other times kill all but one.

It is a rare and very valuable talent the importance of which cannot be overstated and all the Gurkhas seem to have it. When I joined the military in early 90’s the first thing i can remember on day 1 was the nco told us the way we had to lace are boots .he told us that if we are on stag it would stop us from getting our throats cut . I never committed to service with the Army, but through LUOTC & TA training, I shared training areas & barracks with Gurkhas a few times. What I really found so remarkable was the incredible politeness, humility, friendliness, courtesy and helpfulness of every man that I had the honour to meet. One night after D-Day, a squad commanded by my father's best friend had moved forwards to reconnoitre German troop movements. As they were laid up, he felt what he thought was a snake crawl across his gaiter. Looking back down his prone body towards his boots he saw a flash of white teeth. Reporting back to the Company commander he was informed that a platoon of Gurkhas were operating in the area. The "snake" had been a Gurkha trailing fingertips over his gaiter to detect whether it was a German one or not. He asked what would have happened if he had been a German and was told that the flash of teeth would have been the last thing he saw.

They are great warriors but they’re also the cream of Nepalese society often very highly educated. They deserve everything we have in the UK. Brilliant to see this video.. @Deus Vult that is why all crusades but one failed to take Jerusalem. The Spartans were overrated. Well trained standing army, but they also fed of propaganda which made them seem stronger than they were. Vikings are no people but a profession, what you are refering to are danes, and the vikings were only realy strong against low guarded areas but had the same problems as any other gainst a standing army. A little insight in the spartans. They were regarded less than the sacred band of thebes (a group of 300 gay lovers). And often only were so succesfull because they were a standing army whos soldiers were nothing but that. Most of greece armies were rallied when needed, and had other professions only beeing soldiers spare time. That is also why rome was so successfull later against many smaller regional powers as they had a professional army against farmers with arms. A little insight in the Vikings. The vikings as said before didn't exists as such but were a danes or nordmannen. Vikings only refered to a group of people who went raiding. They earned ther reputation espcially in the 1 century and mostly because they didn't stick to continental rules of war. that often ment they didn't see monestaries and churches as protected and fought those people. With the myth surronding the longships, the christians assosiating the ships with serpents and the danes ruthlessness much about their strength today is overexagurated. The biggest factor contributing to the end of raiding danes were --- tam tam taaam, protection details and better defensive structures of small villages and towns as well as the rise of professional armies in middle europe. And again the vikings had the same problems against a professional army as any other army did and as spartans did beforehand. And at last the Crusaders. Which are you talking about? See no question about knights on horseback beeing quite a force to reckon with, but not "the best ever". Every military force had their counter. Or are you talking about the child crusade which ended in everybody beeing dying before even reaching the promised land? If we are talking about "crusaders" we are talking about a group of people who wanted to retake or defend Jerusalem. And with that, they failed misserably. Or are we talking about the navel crusades in 1390 ? That would make the crusader a marine or sailor, and they were well let's say not the best fighting force at that time. Just to note the first official crusade was in 1096 and the last in 1396, comparind soldiers within that time span is absurd. It's like comparing a Landsknecht to a WWII Paratrooper - which type are you talking about ? Not to say those groups didn't earn they name, but there is so much overexageration and missconception about many historical armies out there. Not everything we see in movies is close to reality.

So some history about the Gurkas After the Brits conquered India, they decided to invade Nepal in 1815, they initially thought it would have been a walk in the park. After 2 years of war and major battles, it ended in a stalemate but mutual respect on both sides. So the Brits invited them to join them. There are 10 Gurka regiments in India when India gained independence, they are given the choice to join India or the British. 4 of the regiments joined the Brits and 6 went Indian. They were then relocated to Hong Kong (crowned colony until 1997. New Gurka recruits are then trained in HK until the handover. Now the gurkas are sent to UK for training.

My grandpa was in the British regiment that decided to leave with the British. He was first stationed in Hongkong, Singapore then in Brunei and fought in the Malaysian jungle war for over a decade and came out of it alive! It's always amazing to hear him talk about his time in the army

Genetically, Gurkhas are born soldier, gifted, because of their country's tough geographical position, they are shaped by those natural environment to survive in any natural difficult situation. They are mixture of kindness, gentleness, very open helpful friendly,loyalty, honesty , bravery and robustness. They are the soldier who fight by the rule. Never expect cruelty and turture from them. When they are in war , they kill you because if they spared you then you kill them, and if you killed them they can not go back home to see their fiancee or lover and friend family who they had promised to return, somehow its important for them to win the war be alive and return home.They go war with promise to return home, finishing their task in the battle ground. When they kill you they never torture you, or kill you in cruelty, they just give you an instant death, either by gun or the gurkha knife , a death in a quick strike. There was an interesting true story based on that war, a gurkhs soldier was badly injured, but he was still fighting, the british soldiers felt sorry for him,and gave him a bandage and first aid treatment, and asked him, to stay with them untill he fully recover. But he said to them , no I am alright now, I join my gurkha force and we have to fight with each other untill its end. In India a Gurkha was ruturning by train from India to Nepal, at midnight 40 robbers attacked the train, and they started to rob all the passangers of the train including the only Gurkha who was sitted next to an Indian family with their young daughter. The rubber rubbed all his hard earned money from the army service, but he still maintained his coolness. After looting him and the indian family , the rubbers wanted to rape the young girl of the indian family, they started to rip her clothes, then the young girl started to cry for help, hundreds of indian passangers were there, no body dare to mess with the armed rubbers, finally , the girl asked help crying to the Gurkha, then the Gurkha lost all his coolness instantly turned into a bad ass Gurk by pulling off his Gurkha knife blade from the holder and attacked the rubbers killing instantly, 3 rubbers right on the spot and and injuring acutely 7 others , and attacking all the rest of the rubbers with his Gurkha knife alone all by himself, seeing this rest of the rubbers who were alive and not injured yet ran off leaving all the loot behind in the train. Later this Gurkha was awarded medal for his bravery. Therefore guys, Gurkhas are famous not because they are a good soldier, but they are famous because they are a good human, and the saviour.

I remember being a coach driver(Executive coaches) Limousines style, for the Sultan of Brunei, whenever he would visit London for long durations . . . . . . .He was guarded personally and his family also by Ex- Gurkhas . . . usually, when we first met them, they were super polite, but they would always watch every move you made, after about six weeks of seeing us daily, the Trust from them was earned, and they knew you were ok . . . . . . i remember talking to one in particular in the Drivers rest room for a while, he was lovely, funny and you knew he was the real deal . . . . i did ask one question to him personally, about what made him so well thought of, and feared by so many foes? I can honestly say, these troops are seriously a formidable fighting force, they don't stop. I'm lucky enough to live in one of the towns where the Gurkhas are stationed. Their courage and skill are soldiers is beyond doubt. But they also act with dignity, kindness and politeness in civilian live too. They carved an enormous horse out of the chalk in a hill as part of the millennium celebrations, carry out regular litter patrols and they'll even say good morning to you. Fine, fine people. Who would have thought that it was even up for discussion about letting them stay in the UK after their service.

I've had the privilege to personally trained with gurkhas before during my military service, and it's fair to say the seals or perhaps most special forces in this world receives much more advanced training methods as well as technology in weaponry than the gurkhas. That's not to say that technology, advanced training, as well as physical attributes does not have an advantage as well. But what sets the gurkhas apart from the rest during times of war is that these men do not fear death. One cannot simply win a man who doesn't fear death in any situation.

In his account of the fighting in Burma during WW2, George MacDonald Fraser recounts being in the immediate follow-up after a Gurkha assault on Japanese positions. All that was left to do was collect up all the rifles abandoned by the Gurkhas in favour of the kukri as they had gone in onto the objective; respect for their sheer guts and determination.

No it doesn't. It's as much everyday tool as it is a weapon, more so even. Anything you would use a knife, machete or hatchet for, the Nepalese will do it with a kukri

A friend of mine was in the Royal Marines and on exercise "against" the Gurkhas in Central England. He told me that he was hidden in the Cotswold Hills in a radio lorry fully equipped to detect movement around itself and was sat watching the radar screens react to the wind blowing weeds from side to side and rabbits and birds moving around. Suddenly he heard a knock on the door??? "Surprise"... it was a fully kitted out Gurkha soldier who had evaded £100,000's worth of detection equipment to get to the door unnoticed. Amazing people.

During my basic training at The Guards Depot Pirbright we where told by our instuctor " you will see some little brown fellas walking round holding hands do not laugh at them you will regret it" sure enough one of our lads laughed at them then he ran, we didn,t see him for a good few hours when he dared to return, be glad they are on our side having served alongside these lads I,am happy to call them friends
