Gurkha recruits have been trialling what could become a new element of the British Army’s Combat Infantryman's Course.
'Wet gap crossing', which essentially involves crossing a river or body of water, is not currently included on the standard course.
The course is updated and reviewed every three years, and amid fears wet gap crossing skills were fading away, the Army is looking to potentially introduce it as part of the training.
We joined recruits for their training earlier this year.

@@l3gionmusic814 Back in the day, Gurkhas had Khukuri charge in their training. (Not sure whether this still exists) I've watched an interview of a Gurkha veteran where he says that the commander would exclaim "Aayo Gorkhali, thootyo Khukuri, Charge!!", which means "here come the Gurkhas, draw your Khukuris, Charge!!" in Nepali. Somewhere on KZbin, you'll find a footage of Gurkhas training during second World War in which they draw their Khukuri with their right hand and hold their rifles in their left hand and charge.

@@shubhankarbhattarai4241 they do still train to fight with the khukuri, but the bayonet is still quite a major part of British attack doctrine, as you can with his charge here around 0:58 it would be terrifying to be on the end of with bayonets fixed. Khukuri fighting they train in now is very close hand to hand fighting, almost like a martial art. You can see his sheathed in a ready position at 2:05

Little known fact, the French conduct small arms training armed with croissants and cheese baguettes. They throw truffles in place of grenades. Pierre Desanslac was awarded the medallion lecoint fromage deguerre in WW2 for using these tactics when he retreated an entire division 36 miles on foot in one day.

Gurkhas are great soldiers, honourable, professional. So polite, respectful, humble yet I would not want to face them in combat. They were our enemy company when I trained at RMAS. I commanded a Gurkha section in late training where we conducted ambush drills. I was really enjoying myself and got carried away. The Gurkha corporal looked at me and politely said: "Sir, now I think it's time we die so we do not frustrate and confuse the young men!" I have come so many Gurung's; it's like Jones in a Welsh Regiment! I remember my army days with fondness. The best people I ever came across. Hard to find that today especially in civvie street!

The Ghurkha's are awesome. After doing some research, there's a big incentive to join up as it pays better than what's on offer in their home towns. So competition is naturally quite high. And since there's a limited amount of space, the best will often make it through selection. 💪🇬🇧

During the recruitment process, the potential Gurkha recruits need to pass written a exam which includes an English section. They are tested on Grammar and Writing skills. They have a speaking test too. Other than that, they go through an English language course during their 9 months' training. On the other hand, the British officers, on passing out from Sandhurst and joining the Gurkhas, need to take a Nepali language course in Nepal. So, throughout the training they are instructed both in Nepali and English. They do need to master English as it needs to be on par with their British counterparts.

@Ukraineaissance2014
@Ukraineaissance2014 Жыл бұрын
@@rmcguire7033 they are still a rifle regiment using that doctrine and equipment. It's a big difference to special forces, even down to gurkhas using the SA80 which is good for very accurate whole section firing, area denial, controlled suppressive fire. Their job is to work with other arms (artillery, air support, armour etc) especially in high ground areas and doing the job of actually taking and most importantly holding key areas. Special forces choose weapons like AR carbines with self defense and less weight as a priority, or with certain tasks in mind like sniper or anti materiel rifles, need much more flexibility and are often totally alone on their jobs with little support. Their main work is recon, sabotage, anti insurgency rescue and other long range light infantry stuff. Having said that though, what both units have in common is great infantry man work, fieldcraft and fitness levels.
