It wasn't made to serve more than five seconds in the field. Resistance members were instructed to shoot one soldier and discard the weapon. In fact it was made to be useless so that if the German captured a weapon drop they get like 1 Sten and 6 Useless Liberators.

I had seen one of these at a gun show back in 1972 (maybe?). The man there had EVERYTHING. He wanted a couple of hundred dollars for it. Cartoon paper, wooden dowel, pasteboard box the whole deal. He said that a friend of his said they "dumped" them out of a C-47 all over Europe. His wording, NOT mine. He also had 4 or 5 Singer 1911s. They were in a wooden crate like box. There was one pistol missing from the box. It even had the serial numbers printed on the end of the box. Everything he had was priced out of my range. Thanks for sharing this with us hichok45

Had an uncle in the OSS. Generally a VERY quiet man. (secrecy laws). Was preparing to drop into Poland when the European war ended (info from my aunt - not him). He said that the FP 45 program was a GOOD program, that never saw its proper conclusion. He said that there were "some of them" dropped, but " nowhere near" what SHOULD have been dropped. He also said that the ones that WERE dropped, functioned as intended. Never got anything more out of him before he died. And, since my aunt has now also passed, I'll never learn anything more "from the horse's mouth". Still, I'll take whatever they told me as gospel because they 'were there'.........

@@tostie3110 Some in Greece but never in France or much of Europe. About half were shipped to the UK which sat there due to the amount of planes it would have required for a drop (think it was 600 a plane they could have dropped), and the other half sat in the US. Most of the use out of these were in the Philippines and China. The police in the Philippines actually used these as their issued sidearm for some time after WWII.

@@tostie3110 The reason more were not dropped in France was the "Patriot" Gangs were using weapons' they were given against each other rather than against the enemy. It would have been like giving all the street gangs guns in a current day city. That was also why it was chambered in 45 a very hard to find caliber in occupied Europe, they learned that when they dropped stens .
@Professional_Youtube_Commenter
@Professional_Youtube_Commenter 3 жыл бұрын
They were cancelled because the airforce calculated they could take maybe a thousand at a time and would need to do a thousand sorties to drop a million guns. A thousand sorties by bombers would achieve much more objectives if they just dropped bombs onto high value targets. Also a bomber would just fly to just one target and drop their payload and fly back home. With these gun drops they'd have to fly all over the place dropping guns by the handful to spread them out. They can't just drop them all in one go as the nazis would find them and use it for scrap and ammo

it actually proves that the 2nd amendment shouldn't be absolute in all situations. the entire reason they didn't drop them is because criminals and otherwise unsavory individuals would be able to get them quite easily after the war. it wasn't a room full of liberals making that decision either, these were experts in their field. i support the ownership of firearms to a reasonable extent, but when you start mass airdropping disposable weapons to untrained irregular forces, all you can hope to create is instability.

Moe MGTOW the right to own firearms does not translate to airdropping massive quantities of badly made handguns to foreign countries who will only suffer because of them. that is the extent to where i stop following the 2nd amendment as an absolute. this plan would have caused a massive influx of unregistered military weapons, including captured german ones, which we know only benefits criminals and terrorist forces.

In the 1950s, urban kid gangs made "zip guns" similar to this, using rubber bands and metal tubing from a car antenna. You'd put a .22 in the tube and pull back on a metal cap at the rear, then let the rubber band snap it against the firing pin. The bullets kind of tumbled out and made ugly wounds.

I still have my old mums p45 Liberator here in the qeer old corrupt UK 🇬🇧. She was a SOE wireless operator in France in WW2 .she never spoke about it until well in to her 80s and only said she used it once to dispatch a nazi soldier who stopped her while returning from doing a radio transmission to the UK. She was a markswoman who was known as a good all rounder. My son has her Webley service revolver but due to the ridiculous UK law had to have it decommisioned so he could keep it..She served 6 months in France in 1943 before returning back to the 🇬🇧 UK..

Here's a story for you. .I had an original ww2 bring back from europe. I was only 8 years old. L remember clearly the first original starwars movie had just been released. One day I was at the local city dump in a small town in Australia. So while dad was unloading the trailer my brother and i were rummaging around other peoples off loads (we did this a lot). i came across an old cardboard box full of old kids toys. There were teddy bears ,old plastic water pistols, leadies, kids school pencil boxes ,old slot cars etc..and in the bottom of this box was one of these funny looking pistols. All strange tarnished silver it looked like it could have come from a starwars film so we took all the good stuff from the box including this starwars pistol home with us. we played with it for years . Everything from starwars reenactments ,cowboys and indians to war play. Anyway as my brother and i got older and girls became more interesting than old starwars pistols the silver "toy" gun was put away.. i never though more of it until i saw one one the tv show Storage wars. I live in Denmark now (20 plus years) but every time i went home to vist my parents in the old house i would look for this FP-45 Liberator , never did find it. well years have come and gone and the old house has been replaced with an office building and the gun is lost to me for ever. i hope it given to some child as a toy gun again or ended up in a museam. my worst fear is that it may have ended up back in the land fill. Now that would be a shame. that's my experance with the FP liberator. cheers Shaun

The Liberator pistol was paradroped in large tubes that would contain hundreds or the tiny pistols. The gun was dropped into France for the French resistance to quickly take out enemy targets and be ditched after firing. The weapons were hard to find by German soldier due to the small size and the weapon in famous for taking out a German captain who was sitting outside a cafe in France when a resistance member pulled out the pistol and shot the captain in broad daylight. The captain died the the resistance member escaped. The weapon was used so that after it was fired the shooter would take the targets weapons.

They were _selling_ weapons to Britain. That's a bit different than dropping them over Europe wholesale. Early on, they pretended to be neutral while in fact favouring Britain. Things like offering to sell materiel to both sides, as long as the buyer paid in gold and shipped the stuff themselves. Britain had huge amounts of gold across the world, Germany had no gold and the Royal Navy controlled the Atlantic. Obviously that gives a _huge_ advantage to Britain, but it's not like it was FDR's fault that Germany couldn't take advantage of the offer, right? Dropping weapons on occupied Europe would kind of blow that claim of neutrality out the water, aye? "Oh, those weapons were for Germans, not our fault the French found them first"?
