He said that a friend of his said they "dumped" them out of a C-47 all over Europe. His wording, NOT mine. He also had 4 or 5 Singer 1911s. They were in a wooden crate like box. There was one pistol missing from the box. It even had the serial numbers printed on the end of the box. Everything he had was priced out of my range. Thanks for sharing this with us hichok45

Had an uncle in the OSS. Generally a VERY quiet man. (secrecy laws). Was preparing to drop into Poland when the European war ended (info from my aunt - not him). He said that the FP 45 program was a GOOD program, that never saw its proper conclusion. He said that there were "some of them" dropped, but " nowhere near" what SHOULD have been dropped. He also said that the ones that WERE dropped, functioned as intended. Never got anything more out of him before he died. And, since my aunt has now also passed, I'll never learn anything more "from the horse's mouth". Still, I'll take whatever they told me as gospel because they 'were there'.........

Most of the use out of these were in the Philippines and China. The police in the Philippines actually used these as their issued sidearm for some time after WWII.

They were cancelled because the airforce calculated they could take maybe a thousand at a time and would need to do a thousand sorties to drop a million guns. A thousand sorties by bombers would achieve much more objectives if they just dropped bombs onto high value targets. Also a bomber would just fly to just one target and drop their payload and fly back home. With these gun drops they'd have to fly all over the place dropping guns by the handful to spread them out. They can't just drop them all in one go as the nazis would find them and use it for scrap and ammo

it actually proves that the 2nd amendment shouldn't be absolute in all situations. the entire reason they didn't drop them is because criminals and otherwise unsavory individuals would be able to get them quite easily after the war. it wasn't a room full of liberals making that decision either, these were experts in their field. i support the ownership of firearms to a reasonable extent, but when you start mass airdropping disposable weapons to untrained irregular forces, all you can hope to create is instability.

Moe MGTOW the right to own firearms does not translate to airdropping massive quantities of badly made handguns to foreign countries who will only suffer because of them. that is the extent to where i stop following the 2nd amendment as an absolute. this plan would have caused a massive influx of unregistered military weapons, including captured german ones, which we know only benefits criminals and terrorist forces.

In the 1950s, urban kid gangs made "zip guns" similar to this, using rubber bands and metal tubing from a car antenna. You'd put a .22 in the tube and pull back on a metal cap at the rear, then let the rubber band snap it against the firing pin. The bullets kind of tumbled out and made ugly wounds.

+Diesel Ramcharger 1500-5000 for the originals. So yeah a replica you can fire for fun is a bargin.
@toomanyaccounts9 жыл бұрын
+toomanyaccounts The originals rarely turn up and people often spend years looking for one. Hence why these replicas are in high demand and often sold out when they make a production run.
@DieselRamcharger9 жыл бұрын
toomanyaccounts Spend your money on whatever you want. Plenty of stupid people in the world. They can spend their money on whatever they want. a 600 dollar gun that can be shot a handful of times before it self destructs, what a deal!
@DieselRamcharger9 жыл бұрын
toomanyaccounts And they aren't all that rare, there are several real ww2 ones on GB right now.
@toomanyaccounts9 жыл бұрын
+Diesel Ramcharger There are a lot of fakes and replicas passed off as the original. They are rare. The number known to exist that are authentic is about 1500 with only 50 having the box and instructions.

General Motors Corporation produced a million of them in 11 weeks at a cost of $2.10 per pistol so a $600 reproduction is outrageous.
@kellymccarthy71096 жыл бұрын
$2.10 back then is $168.36 now. Still, I'd expect a slight increase of cost. But nearly $400 is a bit steep..

+lefr33man If I'm not mistaken the US had already been helping Britain out with Thompson's, so it should have already been obvious, you'd think.
@WJS7746 жыл бұрын
They were _selling_ weapons to Britain. That's a bit different than dropping them over Europe wholesale. Early on, they pretended to be neutral while in fact favouring Britain. Things like offering to sell materiel to both sides, as long as the buyer paid in gold and shipped the stuff themselves. Britain had huge amounts of gold across the world, Germany had no gold and the Royal Navy controlled the Atlantic. Obviously that gives a _huge_ advantage to Britain, but it's not like it was FDR's fault that Germany couldn't take advantage of the offer, right? Dropping weapons on occupied Europe would kind of blow that claim of neutrality out the water, aye? "Oh, those weapons were for Germans, not our fault the French found them first"?
