25 years ago, or so, in junior high (now called middle school), our American History teacher brought in a flintlock rifle. He fired a wad out of it (no ball, obviously), as a demonstration of the technology available, at the time. He did this in the school parking lot. My, how times have changed. Now, ATF, SWAT, and Homeland would be called, if he showed up on campus with one.

The British Land Pattern Musket, colloquially known as the “Brown Bess”, was the most common long arm in use during the American Revolution. Due to the fact that male citizens of the thirteen North American colonies were required by law to own arms and ammunition for militia duty, the Brown Bess became the de facto standard for the Colonial Army. Many households in rural areas owned rifled muskets, such as the famed Kentucky Long Rifle, which were more suitable for taking game. While rifles were significantly more accurate than a smooth bore musket, they were not without their disadvantages. 1.) Black powder produces substantial fouling which will quickly accumulate in the rifling, severely diminishing the advantage a rifle has over a musket. 2.) To take advantage of a rifle’s accuracy, the ball must fit snugly in the bore. This right fit makes reloading much slower, especially when fouling begins to build up. When compared to conventional muskets, rifles weren’t capable of producing the same volume of fire. 3.) Rifled barrels were significantly more expensive to produce, limiting their availability and effectiveness on the battlefield.

The delay between the flint igniting the powder and the gun actually firing is both trippy and awesome, you sort of expect the noise at the first ignition, get nothing, and then a second later see a second ignition and hear the report as the burning powder actually fires the ball. Really neat stuff.

In December of that year I was transferred to an SRF and was sent off to basic training at Fort Campbell in January of 1967. Their I qualified on an M14. In May of that year I completed my active duty and went back to my unit. In June we sent off to two week of training and I qualified with the M16M1. So in just a little over a year I qualified with an M1, M14 and M16.

That's crazy I've seen these guns my whole life but each gun has its own look it would've been cool to see something so new that will be later used for decades. Also what was your reaction to first seeing the m16? It looks so much different from the typical m14
@547Rick8 жыл бұрын
I wish I could remember. I can tell you one thing though. After I shot it. I fell in love. The M1 is a great gun but after firing it for awhile you get tired of the weight and the kick. Not that you can't handle it. It just tiring but sure can reach and touch someone, The M14 is lighter with less kick after repeated fire and loads with a magazine. I though this was wonderful. The M14 is a great shooting rifle. Then I was introduced to the M16. What a rifle! It is light with no noticeable recoil. You can carry lots of ammo and it is a dream to shoot and shoot well. It will not shoot very long distances but I loved the platform.

My older brother went into the USMC in the late '60s. He said they went through basic with M14s, then when he got to 'Nam they handed him an M16. It was the first time he had ever seen one. He laughed about it later, but at the time the Marines trusted their M14s and were suspicious of the M16, especially if they had gone through basic with the M14.

4:07 I can't imagine how annoying flintlock guns were to use in the 1700s they would constantly misfire no matter how good of quality it was, and having to aim in a wonky way to hit something, and those things were definitely heavy, and if it rained no more gun
@W1sperish27 күн бұрын
You think that’s bad,well it gets worse. One of the worst things to do even now is clean your guns,and if you were part of the army in the 1700’s firing a black powder gun,and had to clean all the carbon from the black powder.Basically you and the rest of your Company would get a giant pot of hot water and put your gun parts into it,the problem was back then there was no such thing as interchangeable parts on guns,every piece was one of a kind,meaning if you lock,or even barrel band was on someone else’s gun,you wouldn’t be able to assemble it right,and depending on what part of the gun it was,you might not even notice it until You tried to fire.
@notsosilentmajority18 жыл бұрын
That's true, the M-16 was originally sent to the troops being touted as a weapon that never needed cleaning. I remember my M-16 having "Mattel" imprinted very largely on the butt stock, lol. Yes, it was the Mattel toy company and I guess they supplied the plastic for the butt stock. There was no forward assist and the flash suppressor (that was the correct terminology) didn't have a ring around the top and only had three prongs I believe and they were notorious for getting caught on everything you could imagine. We used to use the flash suppressors to open the metal banding on wooden crates and such. You would stick the metal banding between the open suppressor ring and just twist until the metal bands broke. I'm sure that was good for the rifle, lol. The first "small" rifles (M-16) were issued to supervisors and they had a shorter barrel with collapsable stocks, etc.. They were called the GAU -5 or 5a. Those were the true precursors to the cool and funky AR's we have today. I believe they came out in the mid to late 70's (not exactly sure). To this day I am a .308/7.62x51 fan and have come to love the AR-10's of various types.These rifles are what the original AR-15 was supposed to be in Vietnam. Well, we show our age sometimes. Thank you for this video. I enjoy all your videos but I think this has been my favorite so far. God bless you and your boy for the great work you guys do.

If you remember a Mattel logo on your rifle, then you are having a memory from being a child and playing with the "Mattel Marauder" toy gun. Colt made the M16. Mattel never made any parts for it. You are making things up.
@notsosilentmajority18 жыл бұрын
Why Ask No sir, you are incorrect. I am positive and if you do your research you will see that Mattel did supply plastic for the M-16. I am positive. Why would you say I am making things up? i’ve always wondered what soldiers from different time periods would think of the modern weapons in use now (for example what a soldier in the Continental Army at the time of the Revolution or pre 19th century would think of the M4 carbines we have in service now)

The amazing thing is how similar rifles are over the ages. Compared to the transition from horse to car, flintlock to AR is not that far!

Only discovered my Granddad’s gun collection recently. Found out we got an old M1897 Shotgun, made in the 1920’s. Shot my first gun the next day, including the shotgun. I think I may have a problem...

@Austin Simmons I’m about to turn 13 and just shot for the first time the other days. Higher calibers are cool, but defending on how strong you are 22s are def the most fun to shoot.

I remember when I was active duty in the Navy and carrying the M14 on watch thinking, “Wow! What a old and outdated rifle...” I was also enlisted during the transition to the M16 and I had no idea what a privilege I had at the time to fire that amazing firearm!

I was assigned to the Westchester County LST 1167 from Dec. 68 until July 70. We did a 5 month deployment just of the mouth of the Mekong River providing support to swift boat crews, UDT guys and two HU1Bs. I got to fire a BAR and an Ma tube, lots of fun with both weaponds.
