the 65mm whoop is a great starter. you can flip them around indoors all day long. Winter. Rain. Day or Night. 3inch 3s toothpick for sub-250 freestyle outdoors. 5 inch+ if you really like throwing that weight around. go with ELRS right away imo. Its the future. Will be cheaper than all the other options. And also has the best range/latency. Opensource ftw

Why are you so against building your first drone Matt? Well that’s a little harsh sorry but, you should be recommending building.I think that’s what everyone should do BUILD THERE FIRST DRONE. It may seem daunting and hard but let me tell you. First of all it’s very fun, second now you have a skill, and third now you learned how the drone works and the different parts which will make customizing your drone possible, fourth now you can actually fix the drone on your own without much difficulty compared to if it was your first time, fifth now you have your own creation that you can be proud of and make whatever colour, shape, size you want. Sixth sometimes it can be way cheaper then buying a prebuilt if you look at build kits compared to the prebuilt versions such as the JB starter build you can see a $50 price difference. Thanks dudes in the end do what you want but building is cooler then buying (even rhymes). Cool video, like your hard work :-) I'm not against anything else you said. I think you should make a series of your first build day by day, if you have not made a build already, and document in the videos problems you ran into and things that worked out that would be cool.

Just started using liftoff with an Xbox one controller, and I’m getting really good after 2 hours with acro mode. Haven’t tried any other of the modes, but on the tree maps I’m able to weave in and out of the trees, fly up high, dive, go back in the trees and slow down without crashing too much. Loving it so far. Also the liftoff music slaps.

Prices may vary at the time of you watching this video! Luckily for you, I priced a lot of this gear just as sales ended so you might be able to get some things even cheaper! One thing I meant to mention, is that you can go even higher than $1600 by purchasing custom-built quads. You can even get the same quad that Johnny FPV or Mr. Steele fly. The Nazgul is honestly great though and for the cost of those other quads you could get two or three Nazgul's instead as backups. I sure did!

Fantastic video for people trying to get into this highly engrossing hobby. One other note to make about the Tinyhawk EMAX kits. The controllers are infamous for their QC issues - they quickly begin to suffer of throttle stutter. It happened to mine, and I had to wait weeks to get a replacement. Apparently you can remedy the problem by opening up the controller and cleaning out the throttle gimbal, but I sold mine off so I wouldn't know how well that works. Just something to keep in mind for anyone considering the EMAX RTF kits.

I decided to go a slightly different direction. I have some pretty awful goggles (hoping to upgrade soon) a Qx7 and a Cidora SL-E. Before I upgraded to the Cidora I had a Tinyhawk Freestyle but I'm really happy I upgraded to a 5 inch. It's so much more fun to fly Edit: the total price of my current gear was around 500 bucks. Also I think it's worth mentioning that while 5 inches are great they require a lot more space to fly around and are super powerful, so if you want to fly in your backyard I would stick with the Tinyhawk Freestyle 2.

I think that DCL Simulator is the best for beginners and the most fun too. You don't can build different drones, but you have three prebuild ones. But it has outstanding maps(!) including an animated town with cars, trains, and helicopters and the oil bando with trains, birds and very cool buildings. It also has the best performance for me (as it is a proper Unreal Engine). It also gives you a really nice online racing environment.

I am a complete noob (just 3 months in the hobby), but I would suggest one more thing, which is that with that emergency fund which you may be left with, it is a good idea to have a cheaper drone (such as de mobula, or even a low-quality 3-5') to fly in case the one part of the first drone gets broken and you have no spare ones. Worst part of this hobby I would say that it is the waiting time... and spending a few weeks without flying is the worst (and yes, you can spend some time in the simulator, but flying something for real, even if it is a small quad, is always better I would say). Have fun guys!

When I was getting into FPV a few years ago, I knew I definitely wanted a BNF so I could get in & learn both flying & repairing right away. The repairing led to eventually building. To be honest, I enjoy building just as much as flying. Seems like every few months I get the desire to build a whole new quad, smh. Lol.

Part Recommendations that are hard to break - Armattan Rooster 5in Frame, SERERATE ESC'S (not a 4in1) Spedix Brand are cheap and super reliable, Matek AIO Flight Controller, Emax Eco Motors, DalProp Props (i love building and have 10+ quads, but my everyday go to freestyle quad is this exact setup for 2+years. At least twice a week this quad smashes into the pavement at FULL throttle and just keeps on going!!!) If you need a bind and fly (BNF) Iflight Nazgul or Cidora is good goto

Good info, and well thought out. You're missing out on a lot of fun with nothing in the 3" size. Some great options to look into would be the FPV Cycle TP3, the Five33 Tiny Trainer, or the Racer X Twig XL. Most of these are running 1303 or 1404 size motors at 5000 kv on 3s 450mah batteries. BetaFPV sells a rtf version of the Twig XL in collaboration with Racer X if you don't want to pay for shipping from the US. Have fun flying out there!

Fantastic video. Thanks so much for taking the time to do this...sadly, being from the UK, most of these prices are nowhere near accurate to us Brits. UK tech prices are always horribly inflated. Meaning $100 item in the US, costs almost £100 in the UK, despite the pound being technically stronger to the tune of £1.00 = $1.40 Your $300 setup as an example, costs £250 ($347). It's the same here for PC components. Not blaming you or calling you inaccurate, mind. Just me venting at this country's ridiculous inflated tech prices!!!

Would be awesome if you could do a video on drone packages with the DJI Air Unit models, which can be used with our own transmitter, rather than being stuck with the DJI transmitter. The $569 retail for the DJI goggles is kind of a killer, but having HD FPV, without heavy breakup and noise, and a much better low altitude range is night and day. Considering the air unit and camera runs about $169 by itself. The ~$300-500 the drones cost seems like a steal. I know you covered one price point at the end, but it would be nice to see an entire video with a range of digital drones and your opinion on them.

Sooo I'm guessing going digital earlier without crossfire would be somewhat reasonable? I'm looking at my shopping cart containing a nazgul5 V2 6s with a xsr receiver and DJI V2 goggles to go with my qx7 I've got already... As far as I can tell it's easier to go crossfire later than it is to go digital later?
@eedok
@eedok 3 жыл бұрын
I'd get rid of the QX7 recommendation as the current version doesn't do d8 mode, and the TX12 exists at the same price point that does D8 mode, and has USB charging. Also there's a point where having a backup drone is amazing, as crashes not ending your flying is awesome. Also makes troubleshooting parts gets easier when you can move them between drones

dji digital is very cool but those rcvrs are really expensive also. also i'd suggest the ev300o over the Skyzones as they are exactly the same cost but you can change transmitter modules as well.

Matt, this is a great video but I don't think it is a good idea to recommend the Qx7 anymore. FrSky is phasing out their old receivers (which have had a ton of issues with firmware versions) and the Qx7 is not compatible with the newer receivers. Also FrSky is phasing out D8 mode in later firmware updates which makes the mobula 6 unflyable. Radiomaster has released some newer radios that are in the $100 price range.

great video! only thing I would scold you for is the orientation of the CRSF transmitter's antenna, it should be vertical, not horizontal :)

It seems like the sweet spot for a beginner that has some extra cash from stimulus or whatever is the $400 package. Same radio and goggles used all the way to all least the 800 kit (so far watching still).

I was able to connect my emax tinyhawk 2 controller very easily with Liftoff. The only thing is you need to connect your hawk right, because it has the motherboard.

Hi Matt, perhaps mentioning a $100 HD cam or up needs to be added to all this. Nice vid man.

As soon as your budget allows you should get a second drone so you can continue flying even if the primary quad is broken... And a couple of GoPros...

Watched the whole thing from beginning to the end. I got the Mobula 6HD because of you and I freaking love it can't wait to upgrade soon. I would love to see a video dedicated toFPV goggles (Eachine EV800D's, Skyzone's and DJI V1 HD antenna's and all upgrades to get less break-up and better range preferably on a budget lol.)
