Assembly went well as did installing all the electronics which at that time required some soldering. I then got it professionally set up using ardupilot and Mission planer as i hadn't a clue how to do it. Well about 15yrs on it still flying great... albeit not that often and it's never been crashed just a few hard landings without damage... So reliability has been exceptional. Its great that your doing something "different" from the norm... Which i found really enjoyable and took me back 15yrs. Thank you.

please do more ardupilot videos. btw, your drone behaved really sluggish in loiter and also in stabilize mode. usually you do a autotune asap. you can do it by enabling PosHold (mix between stabilize and loiter) and activate autotune. its really cool to see the magic happen as it starts twitching around by itself. its a pretty hard time at the beginning when you come from betaflight or inav, but its so damn rewarding. i built a flywoo explorer with ardupilot, really cool to see this small platform flying perfectly acro plus all the gps modes at the same time.

If you want to understand what pixhawk is in very simplistic terms... here you go. Pixhawk is to DJI like Android is to Apple. It can do everything DJI can do, just as good or better, with extra functionality, extra hack-ability, doesn't spy on you, and does it cheaper. The only drawback is you have to learn how to use it. Also, your accelerometer needs better calibration because you were wobbling all over the place when calibrating it. You can't just hold it with your hand like that. You must balance it against an object and be absolutely still for it to fly correctly. I've flown APM 2.8s that drifted less because they were calibrated better. You can do a lot with the pixhawks. Drones? Yep. Airplanes? Yep. Helicopters? Yep. RC cars? Yep. Rovers? Yep. Boats? Yep. Submarines? Yep.

To give a perspective on what these can do, here is the mission for our pixhawk plane; Takeoff, go to a predetermined area, find the red spot and save its coordinates. add it to the waypoint list for the next lap, go around the parkour, drop a ball in a way that it will hit the red area, do it again, and finally land on the runway. It does these things all by itself, but calibrating and configuring the control system is a pain in the butt.

I also found it was possible to connect the control input through the s.bus input with the elrs receiver in s.bus mode. The problem with that is there did not seem to be any way to get telemetry back to the radio. At least I couldn't find a way.

Supper happy to see JB tipping his toes in the world of Ardupilot and DroneCode Firmware. My entire quads and planes run Ardupilot firmware and I use Mission Planner to configure and mission plan. The reason I don’t use QGroundControl is because parameter mapping is not 1-to-1 if you are running Ardupilot Firmware. So be careful @JB. Few tips: 1. Perform compass, and FC calibration before installing the FC and GPS on the aircraft. 2. You can use Mavlink protocol or FrSky Fport protocols for both telemetry and radio control. I use TBS crossfire with Mavlink protocol and I run Yaapu Lua script on my colorful TX16 radio. Supper sexy! 3. If your quad is still drifting in Loiter mode, use Autotune mode in a large field (away from trees). Welcome to the dark side Mr. Bardwell. I recently got one of these kits with the 6x, too. This semi-autonomous flight is what's really interesting to me. I used alot of your videos when i first got started building a 5" drone before i realized that i wasn'tlooking for the betaflight experience, but it turned out to be a really fun micro ardupilot project, and really hooked me on this hobby. I also had to find the elrs ->sbus hack to get my elrs controller to work. I think a cool thing to explore would be adding an OpenHD video and telemetry link to this drone (and maybe an open source gimbal, too). That's where i currently am with mine, and it's probably what most people building this type of drone are looking to do. After that using the telemetry link to do basic autonomous flights would be cool to see as well. It would definitely be great to see opflow added. Also, for that super tight positioning, you could add RTK. That's something that would be great for us to see in this format with someone knowledgeable before making the decision to buy. Also, did you notice any excessive vibration on your kit, mainly from the props? My logs are showing a lot of vibration, and im currently ordering new props because that seems to be the issue.

If you have an F405 based FC/drone, there's a good chance it too can run Ardupilot. This could be another option for people wanting to get familiar with Ardupilot features without investing in additional hardware. On the 6X there is a port labeled "RC In" next to the PWM output pins. If you go into the ELRS receiver (ELRS Configurator) and change the output to SBUS you can connect the receiver power, ground and TX to the RC In on the 6X. The 6C has the same capability but the input plug layout is a little different. I've been flying DJI for a while and decided to build a Holybro X500 with the 6C using ELRS and a RM Boxer. The only question mark was connecting the ELRS receiver, so I've been chasing that down the rabbit hole. Pixhawks all seem to be setup to work with Spectrum plug and play and I didn't want to spend that kind of money on the transmitter for a mostly autonomous drone.

A few Ardupilot tips. 1. Make sure to set transmitter to no pulses for failsafe. 2. Stabilize, AltHold, Loiter will be your 3 most used flight modes. Start with stabilize then use AltHold to teach the FC your hover value, then loiter (for quads) for GPS position hold. The actual PosHold mode is depreciated. 3. When calibrating your IMUs for the first time, do it before mounting the FC in/on the aircraft on a known level surface. You will get much better values.

Yes but if you are using ELRS and not CRSF, then the baud rate is wrong, and it doesn't work unless you set a bitmask to change the baud rate, which I could never get to work.

There are ardupilot flight controllers from Matek that have in-built ELRS chips.

JB, do a compass calibration - my arducopter frames hover/loiter in one spot PRECISELY even with cheap/old GPS units. I bet yours was drifting around because the compass needed it's initial calibration. Arducopter can also hover in altitude quite precisely with only a barometer. But yes hovering in ground effect or even a bit higher can give the barometer fits because of all the swirling air.

I did the compass calibration.

Drones like these are used for carrying big or heavy payloads. See if you can get yourself a hold of some lidar and imaging system to attach to the underside of the drone. Get together with some surveyors and survey a great big piece of land and convert to a model with some developers to put in a video game such as liftoff

Oh this is so sweet. “Why aren’t you doing what you’re told!” Welcome to px4.

I stumbled my way through the ArduPilot experience when I got a HeeWing T1 VTOL. I'm super excited to see your experience with it. I don't know much, but from what I've seen it appears to be more complicated than betaflight, but also much more feature rich.

Really cool, Would love to see if you could find a decent camera to connect to it with a Mechanical shutter and GPS for mapping? or even a Thermal camera. Could be a cool cheap platform to make a somewhat"Enterprise" drone.

Arducopter is truly awesome once you get your mind around it, like Yappu telemetry w/crsf. Drift and smart rtl, autotune!!! Just finished a 7" LR build with Arducopter, flys so sweet. Good luck and keep the videos coming!

This is a post of despair!! I have two Pixhawk Cube and CUAV 5+. After 5 years of use, I was convinced that PX4 & Ardupilot is the worst system! Many dozens of updates have been released and almost nothing changes, constant errors and a drone crash. I could have assumed that the problem was with the flight controller, but I used three new ones! ! Out of curiosity, I bought a flight controller - a Boeing Paladin..... AND A MIRACLE HAPPENED !!! I didn't even know that such stable systems existed. Flight readiness occurs 5 seconds after the battery is connected, positioning accuracy is 2-3 cm. Flight stability is excellent

Usually this platform is used for research, autonomous flight and stuff like that. In my research lab we put our custom software inside the flight controller with additional computer for computer vision and ai and use the drone to do stuff by itself without user interaction.
