Joshua, would you ever consider a video where you pick a couple of price points ($300, $500, $700, etc.) and put together a complete FPV setup (drone, controller, goggles, batteries, charger, etc.) if you were brand new today? Thank you for the informative video on the goggles today!

The latency numbers for analog and HDZero should be even lower, if a fair comparison to DJI and Walksnail is to be made. The DJI/Walksnail numbers of around 25-35 ms are how long it takes the very first pixel to change on screen. To draw an entire frame is between 8-16ms longer than that. For HDZero and analog, the 14-16 ms number is the whole-frame latency. First-pixel latency for analog and HDZero is between1-3 ms. So a proper (fair) comparison would be to either add 8-16 ms to DJI and Walksnail or subtract about 16 ms from analog and HDZero.

Research I did in university some years back showed that the time between a visual input and a resulting action from the hands was about 300msec. This was a sort of whac-a-mole test - in FPV flying, a more complex task - this time will be longer. To put these latency numbers in perspective
@Mark_Cook
@Mark_Cook Жыл бұрын
@@peter4presidente That’s not true, first off racing pilots have much lower reaction times. Combine that with muscle memory and knowledge of the course and the “feel” of previous inputs and you get a scenario that 20-50 ms makes a massive difference. This same amount of bogus science impacted gaming development because “research shows no significant difference between 60 fps and 100fps” “no discernible difference in image quality after 1440p” etc etc.

The biggest thing that is making me chose walksnail over dji is the longevity of it. Walksnail is aiming for their system to be compatible throughout where as dji you mostly need to buy a whole new set every one or two years to be up to date. And walksnail has a 4K unit now (moonlight)

I started FPV around a year before DJI released their digital system. At the time I had the best analog systems and decided to try out the DJI system. (v1 goggles with a quad with a dji air unit). I immediately was stunned by the quality, it was like looking at GoPro footage, but it was a live flight! I could see every branch and blades of grass. Absolutely groundbreaking ,I thought! Unfortunately, during that very first flight I also lost complete interest in this new system. Spots/bushes/tight concrete spaces which were easily flyable with analog (although, sometimes at some spots, with terrible signal) were not flyable at all with the dji video feed. The higher and variable latency made it just way too hard to fly these gaps, and in the bushes it dropped some frames so that the next thing I was my drone is laying on the ground, without me being able to react. With analog, even with the worst signal, i can still make out contours which saved my countless of times. Nowadays, I mainly fly my analog toothpick and leave my dji stuff in the closet. I prefer that much more over the digital experience I had back then. Im sure it got much better tho, but I would probably prefer HDZero over a digital system. Edit: I got HDZero a few weeks ago and its amazing! If youre an analog pilot who wants a better image with the same low latency and responsiveness, I highly recommend HDZero! :)

Based on the video quality comparisons... If I valued low latency I'd go analog. That digital sparkle of hdzero looks really bad, and eh penetration when its possible to get higher powered analog makes analog better than hdzero. Imo, anyway. So the question for digital where image quality is preferred over low latency, its dji vs walksnail. ... And thats tough. I wouldnt be able to fly with blurry smudges when mbps goes low for the same reason I disable motion blur in video games; makes it look like soup, which actually gives me a form of motion sickness. So dji for the win? But man... The price and less compatibility makes that a hard sell...

I currently fly with the DJI V1 goggles, and I've been wanting to upgrade to something a bit more compact with OLED screens. I don't really have a problem with the video, I'd just like a nicer pair of googles. I only fly freestyle (and usually alone), and I record all of my video on the DJI air unit (my flying isn't good enough to warrant the price of a GoPro). I have also been thinking it would be nice to fly something smaller than 5" from time to time. I waited for all of these new systems to come out so I could compare them, and now that the dust has settled I'm still undecided. I seem to fall right between the cracks of these systems. The closest one would be the HDZero goggles with a Walksnail VRX, but I'd almost never use the HDZero VRX. The DJI goggles are the size and features I want, but the price of the O3 AUs is too high, and not having defogging is pretty annoying. I think I'll keep flying my DJI V1s, and wait for a sale on one of the systems (I bought my DJI V1s at a really good price). I'd also like to leave some time to see if the Walksnail latency on HDZero goggles improves.

It's interesting how different people are in their preferences. I absolutely understand people who care most about latency, ultra maneuverability and choose Analogue for that. For me, image quality and transmission stability is without question the most important thing i care about. So the DJI downsides of being heavy, no back / side compatability, no third party support, really isnt even a con for me. I want to feel as close to "eyeball-quality" as possible when i fly, so there's no other system that even comes close. I dont need very low latency for freestyle tricks, i dont need betaflight HUD features. I just want the best possible image quality when flying. Now, IF someone else developed an equal quality system, that WAS open source and compatible with more things, i'd get that 100%. But so far nobody has managed to do that, at the same price / size.

This pretty much only makes it harder if you are just getting into it. Because as a starter I would prefer going for a cheap option (so analog I guess) as I might crash stuff or might not even like it. So then when looking for a goggle you like a versatile one. So then this one seems like the perfect one. But then looking at the cost you could wonder why not just going into the DJI ecosystem (A Integra cost about the same). Might be a little more latency, but as you say yourself, that does not seem a huge issue as many people use it. Another option is just first going for the cheapest option there is, but you still spend money on that to then later replace it anyway. If you decide to continue with FPV that is.

I'm about $400 into the hobby with a Mobula 6 tinywhoop, a Taranis Q X7 controller, and EV800D goggles (each about $100 when I got them), plus extra batteries, ELRS upgrades on both the TX/RX side, BT2.0 battery connectors for longer flight time, and replacement props and a couple frames. As starter gear, it has been great to have something I have crashed probably 50+ times trying to learn how to fly (and how not to fly). Just buying a controller and a simulator for your PC doesn't feel good enough, but more expensive hardware on your drone will hurt more if it breaks while you're learning. I'd suggest starting with the cheap stuff first so you have real world experience with the hardware, but aren't out a lot of money if you break something, or find that the hobby just doesn't really capture your interest like you thought. I've been flying that gear for a year and change, and I'm considering upgrading to Flywoo's long range quad with an O3 air unit and the Goggles Integra. I absolutely wouldn't be comfortable staring down the barrel of a $1,000 purchase like that without the experience I gained flying the cheap stuff.

You kick ass Josh. As for your definitive answer, with regards to some good freestyle pilots flying DJI, the 35ms latency is within a margin, under 80 or so ms, that the returns on getting lower diminish due to how the brain process input and responds. A playable ping range and the qualitive improvement in performance on video games is one of many examples. I'd say anything under 60ms would allow for very similar flight performance to sub 25 for most people. I'd like to see this studied informally by you guys. Three is a diminishing return on human response time where the curve starts to increase more dramatically around the 80 to 100ms range. But that is not to say that one could not "notice" the difference while flying.

On latency, for those unfamiliar with what it means exactly: At 70km/h, a 50 millisecond latency means that at all times your drone is 3 feet further ahead on it's flightpath than you think it is, ie the image you see in your goggles is the image from where the drone was 3 feet ago so by the time you see a tree 3 feet ahead, the drone has already crashed into it. Do note that is not necessarily an issue. When flying with FPV goggles what you see is your reality so as long as the drone has enough room to fly, eg. you're making a slower speed panorama recording of a mountain peak or lake, it does not matter if the drone is slightly ahead of you because there is nothing to crash into or requires split-second adjustments.

Thanks for the video! Started out two years ago, got a analogue Eachine EV800DM goggle for about 70 bucks with discount. Bought a Caddx Ratel 2 last month, and with the new cam, Analogue is again sufficient for me. Will get a O3 System later but it's incredible what you can achieve with analogue video with a low low pricetag

The ratel 2 is a great camera. And they are great goggles for the price... analog is great as long as you invest in good cameras

I only fly DJI v2 and Skyzone cobra X box goggles. DjI for close range and analog for long range. I don’t see the need for anything else but the walksnail VRX combo for my Skyzones are very tempting. HD zero just doesn’t interest me at All 🎉

In my opinion, WTFOS is a community response to DJI's lack of response. That doesn't make DJI responsive. It's a band-aid. It's a great band-aid, but still a band-aid.

How in the world did you get so knowledgeable on all this. How long you been doing this hobby, and more importantly how much money have you sank into it? It's so fun to watch, and I've got the bug, but like you said there is levels to this, I'm an ex studio musician and have spent so much money on gear it blows my mind, but I make money with it, so it pays for itself, this however doesn't, and like some things, it doesn't matter as long as you enjoy it enough, what do you recommend the bare bottom bones is to get into this type of hobby. I know about sim flying, and some kits, which I can solder decent but not micro boards without having to buy new tips, anyways, I've watched lots of builds from 5"-3" to different setups so I'm aware of the difficulty. I'm just learning to understand all the variables of everything before I dive in

You know you can also take the Telemetry file from the Goggle video if you have SD card in both the AIr unit and the goggles, and you can easily overlay the goggle telemetry on DJI from the 1080p Recording from the AirUnit.

tl;dr DJI is best overall. Analog for budget and whoops. Personally, I started with and currently use DJI V2, but ordered the HDZero for versatility and open source goodness. Also, while the O3 image is almost as good as a Gopro, it doesn't offer the same versatility of popping it off to use on another setup without a dedicated cam for each (cinewhoop to 5", helmet cam, tripod, etc.); I guess you could technically strap a cinewhoop to a 5" or your helmet... Feels like the cost weight to performance of O3 or GoPro is actually a more meaningfully nuanced decision than which video system to pick. I was kind of hoping this video would have made it more nuanced, but the clear winner is DJI. The vast majority of pilots aren't going to be racing, freestyling, or otherwise at such a level where they may get anything truly meaningful from HDZ or analog latency other than subjective "feels". A few may get some meaningfully more objective benefit from them, but real world it won't matter for most.

So what I get from this is that DJI is the best. Which brings to mind the question I’ve been having since DJI NEO came out. I’ve seen videos about DJI going long 3 km long and then are there videos or at least one where they use the DJI Neo in fob mode and free styling like crazy. My question is is the long distance achievable with the FPV radio controller as well as if it is achievable the freestyle with the RC-N3 included in the Neo combo?? Because I’m thinking buying the DJI neo fly more combo and wait for the leaked Dji budget goggles. Or if it is not possible to combine those… then buy the DJI neo alone, and wait for the budget goggles and combine them with the freestyle FPV radio controller, only if it’s possible to achieve the long distance flight with those two. Did I get it right? Hope I made myself clear. Lol

GREAT video. I have been out of the game for awhile (never was that good, and never invested heavily) so I have not heard anything about walksnail until today. The smearing looks a LOT like dropped i-frames in mpeg video compression. I'll bet it is based on that. Very fascinating.

I'm really leaning to the dji v2 goggle because of all the abilities it gives. Can it communicate with analog systems with that AV plug in and a adapter? I saw one in another video. What about comfort? Eye relief? Prescription needs? These are big factors as well for goggles I'd think.

I'm 63 and new to all this FPV stuff and am merely trying to create a flight simulator in the guise of a RC plane/glider w/ a tilt/pan FPV system that will give me the feel of flying, 'cause I lost my ability to fly my beloved airplanes, due to injury (wheelchair user now), as well as a fixed income and rising costs for everything necessary to maintain your flight status, like insurance and av-fuel and rental costs to maintain your flight hours - it just costs too much. So, I'm trying to glean the necessary knowledge to put together a system I can both afford and will give me the best video quality possible. I bought a RC glider (big purchase for me at over $300) and a few pieces I think I need - mini camera, autopliot module (Kopilot) for the return feature, GPS module, tilt/pan set-up, etc. I don't plan on doing cross-country RC flying, as I'm just wanting to cruise around my area and do some aerobatics for some virtual fun. Still debating which FPV goggles and antenae to save up for, but I think its going to be a Fatshark Dominator for price point and versatility. Not even sure if the stuff I've purchased is analog or digital. How do you tell? Its all a bit overwhelming w/ so much minutiae in parts compatability and so forth. Almost more questions than answers, now. smh

16:00 i think it would make sense if it did the average of the color / luminance of the last known frame for the spot/pixel blocks with the last known signal. yes, it would have to keep 2 or more frames in buffer instead of trashing them, but it would be okay. nearest neighbor would be bad because which neighbor should it grab from? it'd make it blurry and inconsistent on your frame of reference. plus you'd get an update on the frame pretty soon ideally so the color would update. it should also extract any part of the spot that is uncorrupted first, then plug the rest in with the data from the last frame buffer.

@joshuabardwell, I bought dji v2 goggles and didn't realize until it was too late that they aren't compatible with my dji mini 4k. If these goggles do analog, is there a good but cheap drone off pyrodrone I could get that would work with them? Thanks for this video, this explained so much to me

Awesome vid! Answered a lot of my questions on systems BUT….I am on the fence between DJI O3/Goggles 2 and Walksnail/Avatar. Issue.. goggle fit. I’ve heard a lot of negs on the fit of the goggles 2. That would be a deal breaker no matter how awesome the system is. Some goggle fit info vid would be awesome as most can’t go to a local shop and try goggles on.

Two months ago the reviews sold me on HDZero so I ordered the $700 bundle, Antennas, Walksnail Avatar VRX , Batterys, cables, HDZero expansion module, ImmersionRC rapidFIRE, BetaFPV BNF Meteor85 2S HD Brushless Whoop w/ HDZero & Nano Cam - ELRS and then I ordered a Rubber Maid container for everything and put it in a closet where it still sits waiting on the arrival of the HDZero bundle that I thought was on its way two months ago just to find out they had to build the units after they returned from CNY..... You didn't mention the DVR in the VTX units...

Clarification question. Joshua said DJI FPV Goggles V2 could be used with an analog system as well as a digital system? I have a pair of fat shark transformer SE from like four or five years ago and a little diatone 2.5 drone that I got with it at the time. I haven’t flown it in four years and I’m just starting to get back into FPV. I was looking at upgrading goggles potentially and I wanted to get a 5 inch prebuilt bind and fly, maybe something like a Nazgul that I’ve been seeing a lot of videos about. Would those DJI goggles work with both my existing drone and something new like the Nazgul?
