Tim built a fiberglass Funjet with extra junk in the trunk. Ian built a bus. The two came together like peanutbutter and chocolate. With a failure this successful, a second version seems inevitable.

I’ve been flying funnels for years. Built a bunch of them from stock to fully fiberglass and over 250mph. Building a 14s fiberglass fun jet now. I’ve found over the years you need big torque servos (150oz at least per side) also make your elevons out of solid balsa and carved and sanded to shape then fiberglass. I added basswood to the trailing edge to give me a solid area for hinges. I run 4-40 ball links with carbon sleeves. Awesome idea and can’t wait to see another video!

@@timhayward7996 those should work, the solid balsa elevons will make all the difference in the world! As well as adding some basswood to the trailing edge so you have a nice and strong hinge point and added strength to the back of the airframe.

@nacorti
@nacorti 3 жыл бұрын
@@gus8378 high speed = high pressure on control surfaces, which bends wings the opposite direction of the control surface movement So you're stuck in a dive, you pull back on the stick to pitch up but the nose pitches *down* because of the reversal. Killed a number of P-38 pilots back in the 40s
@gus8378
@gus8378 3 жыл бұрын
@@nacorti I still don't understand, and I'm very curious. Why does the nose pitch down if you pitch up on high speeds? The control surface is on the back of the wing, so when it tilts up it makes the whole wing twist, right? So it would make the front of the wing point up and the back of the wing point down. It should still make the nose pitch up, shouldn't it?
@nacorti
@nacorti 3 жыл бұрын
@@gus8378 you're close! You're correct that the wing twists, the front of the horizontal stab points up and the back points down - but at high speeds, what this means is that the entire horizontal stabilizer is acting like an elevator instead of just the control surface hinged on the rear. So in that position, it acts like a giant down elevator instead of up This principle is incorporated into the design of modern fighter aircraft with the Stabilator, which moves the whole horizontal stabilizer at high speeds
@gus8378
@gus8378 3 жыл бұрын
@@nacorti Oh I seeee. I was thinking about the wings, but it's the tail that's the problem. I can see how it would twist and have the opposite effect of the pilot's input. And I always wondered why some fighter jets moved the whole stabilizer. Very interesting. Thank you for explaining.

Something to think about. Set the angle of attack, while on the launch craft, so the jet give some lift. This way the launch craft only needs to provide thrust for the two aircraft instead of lift and thrust for both. The problem with the rocket plane the servo's were overcome by the stresses on the control surfaces. As speed increases the amount of effort to change the control surface angle increases. This is a problem the gave all kinds of trouble to the first jets and super sonic aircraft.
