This stuff was the BIGGEST pain the arse when first starting our FPV group. Most didn't know what channel they are on or how to change to a specific channel. We are trying to put everyone on Raceband and that seems to work the best. People with that 600mw VTx is a continuous problem and mostly have to fly pretty much alone. A couple people have been testing the $12US Eachine VTx03 with good results. It continuously blinks out powa, band and frequency. It only has a dipole antenna but seems to matter not. The best tip before powering up is too turn on your goggles first to see if anyone is on or near your channel.

We have a terminal for the transmitters to be able power up and change channels while others are flying. Only negative side of that is you have to take out your antenna. Some have them directly soldered so they just gotta wait untill everyone has landed.

The problem your describing is due to poor co-channel performance of the FPV receiver. The effect your trying to describe is not due to the diversity algorithm it is due to automatic frequency control of the FPV receiver. The advice to reduce RF power is good and your command link cannot be affected in the way that FPV is as the modulation is different and the link is typically frequency agile.

As for your teaser about LaForge vs True-D in terms of rejecting interference, I'm going to put it out there in advance that I think the LaForge will be superior in this regard. We race 8 in the air regularly in my local group and those using the LaForge have noticeably less issues than the True-D users with a densely packed RF field.

Laforge and liking it. I am a huge fan of the youkits antenna analyzer for HF antenna tuning, I'm wondering if there is a way to do the same kind of sweep across 5.8ghz, to find the most resonant frequency of an antenna. I'm curious how much the frame and surroundings affects impedance, but can't seem to locate any gear to make that sweep in 5.8ghz. I might want to try an antennas with a very high Q.

8:28... yes, your video power level should be as low as possible for the best signal reception to avoid adverse reflections and swamping your 2.4gHz RC link with interference reducing your RC range. I recorded my DX9 that has always exceeded it's range tests lose it's connection with a UMX Radian also range tested while a goggle mounted non-diversity Fat Shark 5.8 VRX using a (genuine) IBC Mad Mushroom antenna received a clear signal from an FCC stamped 25mw 5.8gHz TX transmitting from a few hundred ft up to almost half a mile out in lift OVER and past the same building affecting my 2.4gHz signal distance! And before that I watched the same thing happen with another well tested 2.4gHz RC TX at very close range when a building blocked my ground stationed 2.4 transmission but the same type of 5.8 25mw VTX/cam with clover L antenna showed me even while out of line of sight by a few feet where it was landing. The DX9s antenna has both vertical and horizontal polarization in the form of a half wave center fed dipole antenna system but it still could not communicate with the UMX Radian dispute having the advantage of being a lower frequency and having over double the transmitting range distance on paper. Ever since that seeing the advantage of transmitting higher up and having circular polarization I don't think in terms of adding more VTX power to increase my 5.8 range flying on 2.4gHz as much as paying attention to more important considerations because I want the video to go out before the RC link as I fly mostly downwind where I'm at and fail safe won't help much to bring me back in range on a good day.

Hi. So, I have a ham license, but got it a few years ago, and maybe a bit rusty. I'm thinking of getting into fpv, though for rc trucks not drone (at least not right now, maybe in the future though). Anyway, my question is regarding what the actual requirements are for fpv? Searching for "fpv staying fcc compliant" gets me page after page of people saying "yes you need a ham license". Im assuming the only real requirements are use minimum power required to operate, and verify you're allowed to transmit on that frequency. But, its a black box to me, and the last thing I need is an fcc fine, or to put my license in jeopardy. Is there some resource for making sure my ducks are in a row? Also, I remember reading something about being required to transmit your call sign periodically, or having it embedded in the broadcast. Is that something I need to do?

Thank you for this one.. we have been trying to figure this out for last week.. I have one question.. does it make a difference to have ie. TBS Unify or random cheapo BG VTX, considering only the "width" or "frequency footprint" Is TBS more accurate when transmitting on certain freq? We have found out that those bg vtxs are blasting on almost half the spectrum and had trouble to get 3 people flying together.. now we are considering buying UNIFY RACE vtxs but they are sold out everywhere :( But trying all your tips here (distance related) will help for sure.. we had our lounch pad like 5 feet from us :D everyday we learn something new from you.. thank you for all the effort you do for us newcomers to the hobby :) is there any chance of Part2 of this video? more on the harmonics for example. Thank you..

Hopefully when the OSDs and SmartAudio gets more widespread, the vTx can boot up in pit-mode as default, which will let you configure frequency and power before you arm, and then when you arm it will go to the selected power.
@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 7 жыл бұрын
You can boot to pit mode now, but getting out of pit mode requires you to go into the menu. I am begging the BF devs to implement a Pit-Mode Flight Mode so you can switch pit mode on and off with an Aux channel.

I'm new to FPV, but have been flying R/C planes for 15 years. I'm a bit surprised to see all the video noise issues with the VTX these days. It seems to rival the old days when we fly on 72Mhz frequency, where servo glitching is a constant occurrence if you're not careful with receiver placement and not using motor capacitors. Why can't the VTX use some kind of frequency hopping technology like the 2.4Ghz radio system that we use to fly? I guess you'll first need to convert the analog video signal into digital and then send packets of data to the goggle. Just curious.

Hello Josh from the future 😅 how do the controls work on a UAP ?
@true911m
@true911m 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Joshua, In still pretty new and have been thinking about this topic. First, while dip switches are a pain, they allow you to change frequencies with the VTX powered down. The pushbutton options need to be powered up first, so if you're on an interfering channel you're going to do some damage. Adding a transmit switch is an option, but for now, what's the right way to deal with this? How do race organizers handle it? Thanks, man.
@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 7 жыл бұрын
Pit mode is the answer. Pit mode powers up the vTX at a very, very low output power, like < 1 mW, so you can only see the signal if nobody else is on it, and if you are within like 10 feet. You can also power up on an un-used frequency, at a super low transmit power, if you want additional protection.

I am using TrueD 3.5 and have a question on frequency setting. If I use the search feature I assumed it would lock onto the correct frequency set on my TBS unify. I have been having a lot of trouble lately with my quad blacking out after flying for a while. Sometimes the video looks great on the ground but once I get 30 or 40 yards away the video drops where I just see black. So more info if you choose to help I have tried different cameras antenna flashing the trued 3.6 replacing the VTX. I have been finding changing the camera works best but I also found that the frequency is not matching the VTX. I would just use the find feature and let it lock on. I would think I should be matching the freq exactly for best performance. Can you expand on this a bit. The other things I have done is direct bat direct fc capacitor and all these things work to clear the video but my problem is total loss of video not quality. Areas I fly vary from open field to parking lot little to now objects to interfere with signal. The other thing is I can fly a few days with no problem at all then others I black out as soon as I take off. So is this something expected or should I expect the video to be more consistent until it is not ie broken parts.

in some German competitions we used this LHCP RHCP method to get a fair amount more separation in-between pilots, so I would say yes it works but if you are only using RaceBand its not necessary, if you want to get more dense (~12-16 pilots) it's a definite got to

As far as frequency bleed is concerned: Is there any sort of electronic filtering we can do, on the transmitter,to help minimize this? Would it be s matter if having antennas highly tuned for each specific frequency? Also, do you think a 2 piece carbon fiber shell that can quickly be put around a transmitter's antenna during power up could help fight this problem?

In the Ports tab, enable "serial RX" for the UART that the receiver is wired to. Nothing else on that UART. Wire the receiver to the RX pad on the UART in question. You're inventing spread-spectrum, which is a digital technology. Personally, I wish somebody would put some work into digital standard-definition for FPV. Digital HD for FPV is expensive and hard, but digital SD ought to be much easier. I wish we lived in a world where we could have 40 channels of digital SD that didn't interfere, and I think we could have it, if people weren't so focused on HD. Granted, HD is the future, and anybody who put the work into digital SD would be left behind in a few years, but I can wish.

It's also maybe important to point out that 200mW isn't massively better than 25mW. With 25mW you are getting 13.98dBm while at 200mW you are fetching 23.01dBm. So you're getting around an S Unit and a half increase, which when taken in the real world isn't a huge amount of change. Also for reference, 800mW would be 29.03dBm.

@JoshuaBardwell 7 жыл бұрын
@mistery79 you do need a ham license to operate almost all FPV transmitters, but 200 mW is not the requirement. The rule can be summed up like this: if the transmitter is certified, then the operator does not have to be certified; if the transmitter is not certified, then the operator has to be certified. There are only a very few Part 15 certified vTX on the market, but if you are flying an "FCC Certified" vTX then you do not need to have a ham license. Since you are probably not flying an "FCC certified vTX", you probably are required to have a ham license to operate legally. FCC certified vTX do have output power restrictions. A vTX that transmits over a certain power cannot be FCC certified. This is why you hear people say that transmitters over a certain power require a ham license. But output power is NOT the only requirement of an FCC certified vTX, and it is false that all transmitters under a certain output power are legal to use without a license. (In the United States. Other countries are different.) It is also absolutely false that, as Josinaldo suggests, 5 GHz requires no licensing at all. 5 GHz is not a wide-open field, do as you like. There are rules and regulations that apply there. You are allowed to do things in 5 GHz ISM, U-NII, and ham bands, that you can't do elsewhere, but there are still rules.

Hey Josh, im having a problem with my fpv feed. When i power on my radio (2.4Ghz) it seems to interfere with my googles (white horizontal lines scan across the screen). Could i come down with the connections to my betaflight F3? Id appreciate any help.

That's pretty weird. Are you using a 2.4 GHz video transmitter?
@bwanabizz
@bwanabizz 7 жыл бұрын
yes, Im using a TBS unify and a TGY-iA6C receiver. This interference increases if I increase the power of the unify.
@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 7 жыл бұрын
I don't think the issue has to do with your quad. Also, it's really backwards that the problem should get worse if the Unify power is increased. I think you should find that if you move your controller further away from your goggles, the problem goes away. If that's the case, then the problem is probably in your goggles or your video receiver.
@bwanabizz
@bwanabizz 7 жыл бұрын
The problem doesn't seem to improve, if I move the goggles away from the controller, that's why I'm assuming the problem originates from the drone.

It’s shocking that in 2020 we don’t have a system that’s easier and more stable to manage than this. I don’t even think the DJI system is the answer. It’s way too expensive with too many gotchas.

Great refresher, thanks Joshua. BTW raceband is a terrible set of frequencies if IMD is taken into account. There is a great IMD evaluator that someone made here: etserv.etheli.com/IMDTabler/run?freq_values=5658%2C+5696%2C+5732%2C+5769%2C+5806%2C+5843%2C+5880%2C+5917 along with some great IMD info here: www.etheli.com/IMD/#vid

Bad filtering in VTX's and thus more VTX's in your surrounding making new baby frequencies. We can't go digital yet because the lag it produces. Still No real innovations on this :(

Ultimatevapor918 We fly 3 in the air with 600mw all the time. You must manage frequencies and insure you take off and land away from others. No problems until someone forgets and powers on too close (
@JoshuaBardwell

You absolutely can all run at high output if you know what you're doing. However if you are all flying at low power, there is more tolerance for mistakes. 25 mW is very capable of flying in many environments. I definitely think people should start at 25 mW when they are new to a field or club, and only go higher if they are sure everyone knows how to do it safely.

Jesse Peacock yeah I do remember Steele saying that he keeps his unify on 800 without it burning out but if I'm on 200 and somebody else's on 600 it doesn't matter where he powered it up it's going to blast me out of the sky maybe I just need to keep mine on 800 then LOL

That's right, MOAR POWER! Get them before they can get you. A good defense is a good offense, right? As Joshua said, good practices are everything when running high power. Do it for the penetration, everyone loves penetration.
