petar dim it means like it changes up, into something else. You know like those videos where they morph different people's faces sequentially? It's pretty cool. For me, the beginning part encompasses the pain and suffering of grief, and the gorgeous, meloncholic middle part encompasses the memories and nostalgia of the past. Goddamn genius, Chopin.
@andymilstenmusic85203 жыл бұрын
I very much agree with you on that, the beginning has a very dark atmosphere usually like what we feel after a tragedy such as death, divorce, etc. as well as the feeling of loneliness! While the middle definitely triggers nostalgia and the feeling of missing the happier times like childhood and when we didn’t have to deal with stress or anything like that! This hits hard because I just started my senior year, and it’s gonna hurt more and more as time goes on like fr!!

Bravissimo Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli ! I am fascinated by this reclusive pianist who was born in January 1920 and died in the summer of 1995. He didn't feel he deserved applause at the end of concerts, he felt it was the composers who deserved the appreciation. He would practise for 8 to 10 hours a day, seeking to perfect his technique and then work on the interpretation. The great French pianist Cortot, hearing Michelangeli play Liszt at a piano competition, said that Michelangeli was a new 20th century Liszt. A perfectionist, Michelangeli was also famous for cancelling concerts, on one occasion it was because of fresh air coming in through a window causing the grand piano to go out of tune. He often had his own grand piano sent around the world with him. Michelangeli was also renowned as a fine teacher, Pollini being one of his pupils. He had more than his fair share of health problems and died aged 75. When a record label he had co-owned went bust in Italy in 1968, the Italian authorities confiscated two of Michelangeli's grand pianos. He never forgave Italy for this and went to live in Switzerland. In his will, he requested that the cause of his death be kept a secret and he does not even have a gravestone in the cemetery where he is buried (in a village called Pura). He had served in the Italian air force during WW2. Late in the war, after Italy had been regained by the Allies, Michelangeli's plane got shot down by the Germans. He claimed that his German captors whipped his hands when they found out he was a pianist, but if this is true then thankfully it did not have long term effects on his playing ability, which had emerged very early in life, he had finished his conservatoire piano studies very early and had also studied violin too. A truly fascinating character and great pianist, he was also a deeply religious man and performed several times in the Vatican.

The best version I have heard so far. It is often done too quickly. Michelangeli really does make it sound like a funeral march - like a great loss has occurred, The slow crescendo up to 1:14 is amazing. The way he darkens the tone from 1:35 to 1:40 is too. The long middle part, should be a happy memory of the lost loved one. Thanks for posting.

I find this piece captures it all. It starts with the somber march, evoking the scene of the funeral of the deceased, then a beautiful section evoking the trials and tribulations of the life that has just passed, with its victories and defeats. Then we enter the mid-section, which captures the spirit of the man leaving the body and entering the spirit world into a blissful kind of state, leaving the physical world behind. Finally, we return to the funeral where the mourners gather and the evocation of the man's life. The playing here is precise. I love how the man withdraws his hands in such a controlled manner at the end.
