My Pastor had a great homily on this and explained that people often mistake the talents given for the things you are personally good at. Its not. The talents represent the message of the Kingdom of God. The wicked servant was given the good news and buried it. never making use of it to make it grow. that is why he was punished. I take great comfort in this parable because when I feel how little I myself have done with this message I remember how the master would in fact have accepted the servant if he had done even a little to grow the kingdom but he did nothing.

I love Joe…one of the best out there. On quibble, “flaws” suggests that there is no deliberate intent. I think that is the charitable thing to do, but I also think Fr Martin has built enough of a record to demonstrate that there is a willfulness to his “flaws.” I will not go so far as to assume it, but it is hard not to think it after all of the different times he has done it…see Trent Horn’s videos on it. God bless you, Joe!

The argument that there's evidence of economic ignorance in this parable is a bit absurd in itself given that the parable actually reveals economic competence. Both the servant with 10 and 5 talents double their investment indicating the writer understands (or at least intuits) a general market rate of return. The speech of both the master and the unfaithful servant align with economic theory that the return on capital isn't a function of the investor but of the capital (he reaps where he does not sow). The master even shows economic savvy trusting his servants rather than the banks (given a general market rate of return the bank would have returned the general market rate of return minus a management fee). Bad interpretation comes with bad theology. If one wants to read socialism into the bible there are certainly targets but using one that explicitly endorses capitalist actions with a good economic foundation is wild.

I’d like to know about a servant who invested his portion yet failed in that venture and came back to the master with nothing. If the master was a shady businessman this servant would get treated terribly. Also, what about a servant who went back to the master with the same amount as the third but kept his mouth shut about the master being a bad guy, he just simply gave the money back. If the master is God, He can reap anything anywhere because everything is His, not because He’s a shady businessman, so the condemnation of God would be the fault NOT the investing of the money.

The parable starts saying the talents are on par with their ability. The guy that got 5 talents was because he CAN make 5 talents more. There is no failing venture here. If you reap nothing, it's because you didn't even try.

I see this parable as further evidence of our requirement to perform good works out of love for our Master, which can only be done using the graces of our Master. We won't do good things for our Master unless we believe He is Master, that is faith and requisite. But unless we use the talents He gives us for His glory we will never be the good and faithful servant.

Something that occurred to me is that you could theoretically even grant that the master might've made his money through unsavory means and it still wouldn't preclude him being a symbol of Christ - as you mention, Joe, in one of the previous parables, Jesus compares himself to a "thief in the night"!
@chrisflanigan7908
@chrisflanigan7908 9 ай бұрын
Theoretically, but unlikely. Take note of the question mark in the following (Matt25), "‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I did not plant and gather where I did not scatter?" It drips with contempt - "SO. YOU. KNOW. THIS?!" It sounds like the Master has just been slandered to his own face. Most lectors read this as a statement, not a question - which greatly changes the tone.

Fr. James Martin's interpretation doesn't seem to make sense with the parable of talents in Mat. 25. But a similar interpretation, in the historical context, make sense of Lk. 19 version of the parable. There Jesus appears to make a contrast between His kingdom and the earthly kingdoms. Herod would have acted much like the king referred to in that parable.

Yeah, I think it was about trusting the nation of Israel with bringing God to all nations. They were supposed to increase what was left to them, not bury it. The disciples do this, Jesus divorces Israel, marries the Church, Satan is bound, and the Gospel can--then--go out to the nations. I think that is the meaning, but--as you say--the application of the passage is in being a wise steward, generally.

So, if the Old Testament reading is a themed tee-up for the Gospel reading, but the New Testament reading stands on its own then why do I hear homilies that try and tie all three together? Is the New Testament reading not related to theme but rather something else in relation to the Sunday Gospel reading?
@shamelesspopery
@shamelesspopery 9 ай бұрын
The Second Reading is on an independent cycle (although all three readings should be thematically connected on major feasts). We want people to get exposed to the New Testament letters in more-or-less order, while we jump around in the Old Testament to find sections that thematically link up.

Where does it say in the parable that the "master incurred lots of wealth while the others go wanting?" The rich owner sounds like an OK person top me, but had expectations of his men, and at least how I read it. The rich man also seems honorable, as he gave them a lot of freedom. I would love to work for him. "you reap where you do not sow?" sounds like every business that ever existed, so are they in business to lose money, and not provide? seriously, am I missing something here? Maybe the rich man wanted more money so he could provide more for his servants, and the third servant missed out. Maybe love your enemies and do good to them...

My understanding is that the talents are a reference to the Holy Spirit that is poured out by God, so that God's people get charisms of all kinds in order to succeed in their journey, and in the same process helping others, towards Himself. I suppose the more one sins, the more one needs it. Some use the charisms and develop it largely; some use it less; some ignore it. Then, this one is my addition: some possibly waste it like the prodigal son did his father's money and end up dining at table with the pigs😅. Not sure if my interpretation is entirely correct.

@@DRWH044 I think it's more complicated than that. Grace abounds to supply the good. There is no good of any description without God. If we respond to grace as the saints do, then grace abounds through you to supply the good to a desperately needy and broken world. Grace is thereby multiplied not only in you but through you to many others. If we sin, not only do we fail to be the instrument of grace to others but we also injure ourselves. In that case, grace abounds to you to supply the good of restoring, healing, reconfiguring, transforming you to be able to participate as much as remains possible to you in the life of grace.

@@marvalice3455 that's right, Scripture only comes from God and not the Romans pagans beliefs. you must know the Roman catechism condemns all who have faith alone in God to Hell, that means Noah, Abraham and all Christs saints are going to hell. you do know Adam fell because he had not the faith to believe God. "Eat of this one tree and you will surely die." the only work he had to do was not to eat of that one tree! How marvelous is that fruit you are eating of that tree God commanded you not to eat from? By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith. By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king's commandment. Heb 3:18 And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not? Heb 3:19 So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.
