Father, My 10 year old son had a vision of Father Seraphima Rose! 🌹 He is in heaven. Also, Father Seraphim was very kind. They led me to his cabin/ cell. Father Seraphim was SO HAPPY!!! Fr. Peter, bless. Fr. Seraphim is a major influence, his works have had a major impact on my life. I decided to put action to my inquiry after reading “God’s Revelation to the Human Heart”. The same love and peace I sensed in his words, I also sensed in the first parish I ever visited; the same love and peace I sense during Divine Liturgy: God’s Love and Peace. I was Baptized, Chrismated and received my first Eucharist on this past Lazarus Saturday. Glory to God! Fr. Seraphim was instrumental in my decision to pursue Orthodoxy outside of the internet, his words have left a great impact in my heart. I look forward to the day when he is canonized and hope that day is soon coming.

This podcast was such a blessing to me. My original Orthodox Christian Church was Sts. Cyril&Methodius in Summerville, SC. I moved across country for health reasons 9 years ago. I greatly miss my old parish and Fr. Anastasy Yatrelis. I have worshipped with Fr. Alexander and his wife, Natasha, many times. They have a church outside of Charlotte, NC. Along with their parishoners, they used to concelebrate with us on our parish feast day and whenever Vladyka Hilarion was in town. Plus, they were part of the tri-state concelebration in October at Cheraw State Park. Fr. Alexander and Matushka Natasha were always a joy to be with! I never knew this, Fr. Seraphim Rose aspect of their lives. It is very interesting.

God bless you, and your stories, and your sweet priest son. i remember my hardest Lent [having practiced Lent on my own since childhood, only nondenominational until this very year, 2024, an orthodox catechumen]… One year [early 00s] right before my birthday [March 18th] the Pope [who i respected as an elder of traditional Christianity] announced in the newspaper that he was “lifting Lent” for one day, Saint Patrick’s Day. i happened to be having a birthday party that very Friday night! Usually for Lent, my own tradition has always been to give up three things that are important to me [note: i am naturally vegan, plant-based diet, since childhood]. Needless to say, after a night of enjoying a sudden break from my fast, it was not easy to get back into it. One of the most challenging things ever, actually! At the time, i remember feeling anger at the Pope. Maybe more of an annoyance at his audacity. _How dare he ruin my fast!_ i thot. but it was my choice to listen. To be fair to Fathers Seraphim and Herman, they did their very best to protect me from her. On a side note, I wonder if Sasha remembers me (Adam). Also, the Tsar's Room is as clear as a bell in my memory - centered by a painting of Tsar Nicholas. On anothet side note, I believe I well remember Marina in her youth. What I wish everyone could discuss was the level of peace that Platina Monastsry gave. A truly holy isle of spirituality.

Farher Peter... Regarding waiting somewhere @50 years to canonize...and hearing why...will you comment on the current work to cannonize our beloved Elder Ephraim...its going on right now. Are you attending ...and would you...if you were there...repeat this comment(@ waiting 50yrs)... And...i am guessing Elder Ephraim is very,very,very special to you.

Elder Ephraim IS a saint. We already know this from the many miracles . It is just a matter of time until many more will know this. However, the Church does NOT RUN early to make that “official.” Yes: Usually, it is 50 years… after the generation that knew the saint has gone on. Many elders on Athos said this and so did Fr. Seraphim Rose. No need to rush. It was 10 years for St Gregory Palamas and that was really exceptional and unique and for particular pastoral reasons then. As to the motivations and possible agenda, one easily speculate… But, in the end only God truly knows and it is secondary. But, that is why we follow the examples of the saints and the holy tradition and do not innovate, for then it doesn’t matter what our agenda or motivations are, or our personal thoughts and desires - they are submitted to the practice of the saints. Again, there is no doubt that Elder Ephraim is a saint. More people should learn about his life. This will happen especially with the publication of the Life in the near future. His veneration will grow organically and from the bottom up. That is how it happens. The dangers of a rushed, top-down fiat declaration of holiness are many and actually may work to sow doubt rather than trust.

She touches on something I have seen as an issue. At 12:15, she comments about a man who insisted he be her godfather but she really didn't want to. I GENUINELY feel that Priests need to over see & monitor who can be whose godparents. I've witnessed a couple CONSTANTLY corner new people looking into the church. Sure enough, when these new people then choose to get baptised, these pushy people become the godmother/Father. A mutual friend of mine commented to some Catachumens, "Ya know, you don't HAVE to pick 'Jack & Jill' as your godparents", the catachumen was like "I don't?" And sure enough, this person chose someone else. These pushy people are converts to the Church themselves and they are RIDICULOUS. Between the two of them, they have something outrageous like 30+ or 40+ new Orthodox that they are godparents of in 10 years. WHERE is the Priest putting the smack down on this behavior? Further to note fr Peter......Special request for you to write a book / manual / guide on being a godparent. I am one now, and I always feel so lost.

Both positions are correct. The Orthodox Church is a missionary church, not an ethnic club, while from the perspective of Fr. Seraphim it was a time when there were no English speaking priests, so finding a service in your language was impossible. In that case crucify your mind so your soul can still be with Christ... But it is best if your mind, soul and body can all be present in worship.

Father Seraphim was greatly pained by father Herman. During the last days of his life Father Seraphim had ordered Father Herman - to keep away - Father Seraphim did not want him near! Father Herman had changed, he had become of a different s p i r i t ! Father Herman's unorthodox tragic spirit become further apperant later through writings etc.. eventually he was defrocked...

Antiochian Archdiocese is where I was Baptised. There are problems in all the Jursdictions. But Metropolitan Saba is a good and upright man, we don't deserve him.

I understand that veils are not widely used across jurisdictions (Greek & Antiochian vs. Eastern Europeans) in the US. Can somebody explain the discrepancy, if any? Thank you.

This is a recent interpretation and problem. The traditional practice is very clear and it was universal, and if you go back far enough, even in the west, this was the practice. Women wore head, coverings, indeed, not only in church, but even throughout the day. So, whatever we’re dealing with today is a recent pastoral problem created by confusion brought in by secularization

Concerning the MP and Russia: Well, Fr. Seraphim died in 1982. it's not the 80s or 90s anymore where there was some hope of a revival of Orthodoxy in Russia or that the old Soviet power structure would disappear. It's now 2024 and more than abundantly clear that such hopes must be abandoned for the near future. Putin has restored a lot of the Soviet symbology, rhetoric and methods. The Russian Federation has invaded its neighbor and is involved in a full-scale war that has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives already. And "Patriarch" Kirill is using this to weed out the last remnants of genuine priests while fully supporting the military aggression and painting it as a "holy war." Monuments to Dzerzhinsky, Andropov, Lenin, and Met. Sergius have been erected in the "Russian" Federation. By the way: Stalin did NOT open *the* churches. He allowed *a few* churches to be opened. While the True Orthodox where brutally persecuted.

Strict carnivore is an extremely difficult and uncomfortable diet to maintain. I’ve done it (poorly) for two Lenten periods now and because we are so conditioned to sugars, carbs, and processed foods in the present era, it’s like detoxing from narcotics. I think anyone who tends to be more rigorist, especially with regard to the fast as proscribed by the Church, ought to be required to experience it even just once for the sake of humility and perspective.

As I’m able. I have a blessing for it. I’ve been really struggling to keep it up over the past few months though due to a lot of turmoil in my life that has made maintaining it quite difficult. But when I’m doing it without issue, it’s basically a strict fast until noonish, eating one small cut of steak with salt…and that’s it. It’s not easy at all. I’ve struggled with food my whole life but the meat-only approach enables me to maintain better discipline and consistency over longer periods of time because carbier food really throws off my metabolism/blood sugar and I feel I have to keep eating. I hope to be consistent enough at some point to be able to have a more disciplined and measured approach with other foods that are more within the fast as prescribed but for now, it’s either this or I simply do not have the ability to fast at all. Food in the west has totally ruined us. It’ll take generations to return to a healthy relationship with food.

I am a recent returnee to Orthodoxy. My head hurts trying to figure out all the infighting between the subsets of the faith. It's all quite disconcerting. I think the greatest pitfall to the Orthodox Church is etnicity. This is America. Speak English. Act American. By the grace of God I found a parish that is English speaking only. If there wasn't such a parish I would have never returned to Orthodoxy.

Act American? Orthodoxy came from the East. If you miss the nuances of Eastern thought which is essentially Orthodoxy you don’t have Orthodoxy you have American repackaged Orthodoxy. Which I am afraid I see happening a lot… Forgive me, this what I find incredibly annoying in the West. Speak English! Act like the West but then we want the East? Americans honestly, take a step back and let the Fathers of the EAST show you what Orthodoxy is. Forgive me!

@@honeymilk4160 I have no problem with learning from the east as a matter of fact I have chosen to learn from the Fathers and from Orthodoxy, HOWEVER if Orthodoxy has come to America should Americans learn Greek or Russian or should Greeks and Russians learn English? As an example Should Latinos crossing our border learn to speak English or should we Americans learn to speak Spanish so we can learn the "nuances" of Latinos? How many Americans do you think might come to the true church of Orthoday if it didn't sound to them like a clanging cymbal or a sounding gong? The Bible says that "speaking in tongues" is of no value if we don't know what is being said.

@@paulmelonas7263 I don’t mind English services. That is fine. Of course we want the Kingdom of God full. It is not about ostracising people, more about keeping the sacredness of Orthodoxy. I’ve seen questionable things in America like people sitting on the floor with crossed legs and singing in an Orthodox Church. And we are just supposed to be ok with it all, I mean, it isn’t a movement. It is the ancient faith. It’s like people who have some identity issues in the west keep going on and on about “English only!” “We are in America” etc etc. So what if you are in America? Yeah it wouldn’t hurt you to know some Greek and Russian given these are the civilisations that were soaked in blood to keep Orthodoxy. It’s all take take take.. it’s American thinking to feel uncomfortable with something and then want to shift to suit their level of comfort. Discomfort is good! Forgive me for the rant. There needs to be balance here. Even the aestheticising of Orthodoxy on social media is getting a bit much and it’s coming from America mainly.

@@honeymilk4160 Our goal is the same. Our goal is a full kingdom of God, however I don't think preserving the sacredness of Orthodoxy is dependent on ethnicity or language. As far as expressions of faith like sitting on the floor maybe it's due to a lack of chairs or pews. I experienced that myself in a Ukrainian Orthodox Church in my town where I left because I'm old and can't stand for two hours. In order to talk to the Priest I needed a translator because he spoke no English only Ukrainian / Russian. As far as preserving our ancient faith it appears the leadership of our ancient faith especially in the Greek Orthodox Church don't share that feeling because they seem intent on ecumanism and globalism. That isn't the fault of English speaking American Orthodox believers.
