Honestly this case is aimed at corporate customers (not white probably) / silent. The fact you can make it into an enthusiast case is just bonus.

For me the 5.25 drive bay is actually one reason to buy the R6 over the competition (e.g Be quiet Dark Base 700)

I agree, No place for my BluRay drive = No money from me. I hate this trend of most cases with zero 5.25 bays.

As to the front. No, you are wrong about making it a big open vent. This is the Define R so it is supposed to be low noise. Frankly, I think the big open vent in front would be ugly but that is a matter of taste. The optical bay is a plus for me. I like having an optical drive and I do not want an external. I would like to see an option to have the font be nothing but 5 1/4" drive bays so I could put a lot of hot-swap drive bays in the front for a server. I would like to have an option to drop the glass panel and one with both sides glass.I would like the lower weight and a more professional look for my office workstation.

Exactly. Don't base metrics of success on a product designed to do the opposite things you want. They didn't build this case for you, so he isn't being objective by reviewing it negatively for that. You *CAN* say this doesn't fit my needs. You *CAN'T* say this doesn't fit the needs of those who it was designed for. Fractal makes cases that do exactly what he wants and those will likely be versioned and updated as well.

The reason for no like on the video - the optical bay rant. When will reviewers understand, people use it for non-optical-media applications?!? I use two - ok, one is a CD, I use it once an year, I can remove it. BUT. The other is a HDD caddy with MASSIVE vibration dampers, which, trust me is unbeatable in terms of noise suspension.

Михаил Найденов who has mechanical hard disk drives? it’s the 21 century dig deep and go solid sate! ...You can pick up a good 1TB SSD these days for under 250 plus it will run rings round the HDDs... in both performance and life span it will pay almost for itself in longevity in comparison to the mechanical variants. You only have one drive to replace so why not? I can understand if you had 10TB plus to replace being too costly.

@Bacon I love to bits my IcyDock TurboSwap MB171SP-B. I use it regularly to do my backups. It's trayless for convenience, it has a decent large fan on the bottom that's quite useful when you do heavy writing sessions on your drive, and it's very sturdy (all metal build).
@Raio_Verusia
@Raio_Verusia 7 жыл бұрын
no matter how you look at it lots of people still like using the optical drive bay. I use mine, there's 2 on my r5 which is unnecessary, but the one on the R6 is plenty reasonable. It's good to have even when you don't use it super often. And on top of that I'm not going to go and buy an external optical drive when I already *have* one I can just move over to a new case/pc so I do appreciate there being a single optical bay. If I need to use a disc drive, it's nice to open my door and press a button and just throw it in, no hassle looking for a dongle or opening it to plug the drive in with wires hanging out etc. IF you don't want the drive bay, remove it with some hacksaw magic :P

Great to see an honest review once again. I think it's a brilliantly engineered case, with those side and top panel mounting systems. I'm with you on the front panel, they should have at least made it silver. One of the Connect D1 front panel add-ons they are selling even has silver accents! If it was a cost saving measure, they should have done silver front panels for the white and the gunmetal, and black fronts for the 2 black ones. I disagree with you on the 5.25" bay, the Define R series has always been about having options in my opinion. It's nice that they still keep it for the small niche who need that option, pretty much all other cases have ditched it. And about that vanity cover for the drive mounts. I don't see it as a problem, because if you aren't going to fill that space with a radiator and a reservoir, you shouldn't even consider removing it.

Well, I dont know if this is a high end case and 150 dollars isnt that much when you put hardware in it for at least a 1000 dollars. That considered, Its a stupid idea to put a black front on a white case. However, If you like the case a can of paint for 15 dollars and 10 minutes of painting isnt much of an effort.

@StalewindFarto
@StalewindFarto 7 жыл бұрын
The Award may be unjustified since the White is a niche variant. Most will opt for Black and Silver, making the main aesthetic complaint moot. The top bay, though limiting to many, provides a high end platform for many users that want the bay. Not me mind you, I've moved on and have an external optical drive. Does this bay behind a door work well for an Asus DAC from that nice Asus Halo board you reviewed?

I'd get the R6 Blackout Edition, because the small void in the psu shroud doesn't bother me at all, and I love the optical bay because I frequently use physical media so it suits my needs, however I have my Zalman Z11 Neo which I think is quite underwhelming by comparison, but I really like it so I'll be keeping it for awhile, despite some annoyances I encountered while building in it :)

Tom, a question! Is that a Fractal Design Celsius S36 AIO you`re using in the build in the video? It looks like it! Please confirm! Thanx a lot! Like your reviews very much, btw! You talk about a lot of details that, I`ve noticed, are not always talked about in other reviews! I find your reviews competent and very helpful in deciding to buy a product (or not!). At least you explain things better! :-) The products you review are also very much the products people with somewhat limited funds appreciate. I enjoy hearing about the experiences you`ve had yourself, often very enlightening! A very good channel! I`m going to make an AMD Ryzen build this year, and have had my eye on the Define R6 for that. You sealed the deal for me! This is most likely now the case I will buy! Thanx!

This is the case I was looking for... released just in time for my build next month :-) - finally an aluminum front (my ancient TT Soprano has a feeled 1kg massive metal door... did not want that plastiky doors back) - a full metal roof - one external drive-bay is sufficient for my card-reader - very clean interiour with good, silent air-ventilation (won't go for water-cooling) - a PWM fan-control (why the heck would I want a cheap manual switch to control my fans, if motherboards can temperature-controlled manage fans since ages?) had the Nanoxia Deep Silence 1 Rev B and the Lian Li PC-K6SX on my shortlist - but both had little "glitches" I did not like, which now the Define R6 solves all

You do have a point about the top filter, but maybe you forget that not everybody has their PC on 24/7. Moreover if you have one or two fans, you can't block the non-occupied space like you can on the R5, thus you'd end with dust just falling in.

Hi. Nice video. I have a question for you. Is there a brand who is willing to build a pc case based on my sketches ?? I don not understand why these brands in pc cases dont take in consideration DUST. How can they build a top grilled mesh, when on top is suposed to exhaust air not filtered it with a mesh ? The only one i see with a perfect TOP exhaust is NZXT H700i, the rest just put a mesh on top and thats it. Most of the time, i ask myself if they know the difference between positive and negative pressure inside a pc case. Probably not. In these days, almost all is based on marketing, TONES of RGB colours and water cooling. I am still using top premium fans, but i dont find yet a case that met my demands in terms of airflow.

hmm i actually like the single optical bay. i still use a touch screen single bay fan controller so im okay with that being there. for be its a bit long back to front. i dont need 150mm of empty space after my gpu. the define c is like 20mm to short for a front mounted aio and a 300mm gpu. this is like 100 to long. fractal please meet me halfway and make something that supports a front mounted rad and like 315mm for a gpu without leaving me with 10cm of empty space to try and fill. if you're doing custom watercooling this is probably great but the vast majority of us just used an aio. holes for mounting a reservoir on that plate would have been good though

You have to buy all three color cases to get the aesthics you want by mixing and matching panels from all three to get the proper uniform look. I had to buy a Corsair 460X and Corsair 400C to get the bracket side panel on the 460X, a clever marketing strategy

I have just had a Define R5 Blackout with window delivered, saw this thought oh no! but watched couple of reviews now I'm not so sure I think the R5 is more versatile especially as I have 4 hard drives + 2 SSD. Plus you can cover one or all three top modu vents with the R5 not so with the R6 its all or nothing. Really not sure though so I may not unpack it until I decide to keep it or swap it for R6. Love the new fan controller and the tempered glass and bottom PSU shroud and HD shroud.

8:15 I think our tastes differ there, it just looks like a prison cell with those grills on it. I think this is the case I will be getting, only in gunmetal; now all I need is everything else.

The engineer spend tons of hours to figure out how to shot the signal distance between PCI-E port and CUP to provide us a better performance. Now we have to use use the extend PCI-E cable to ruin their handwork (0.0)

Great review. White carbon fibre vinyl wrap would look good on the front better than plain white

My opinion - This is a brilliant case and a joy to build in. Built my first pc in December, 2019 with Ryzen 3600 and had no interest in glass or any RGB bling. I wanted quiet and needed the 5.25 drive. I am using an NVME M.2 drive along with a storage SSD mounted on the back. At build time I was not a gamer but was not comfortable with the stock Ryzen/Wraith cooler, so installed a Sythe Mugen 5B. Being stuck inside due to COVID I have eventually started playing sim games and my CPU temps have never exceeded 60’C. The presenter keeps wanting to make modifications to a case that is already so amazingly customizable and has made several nitpicky criticisms.

sticking with my R5. tired of the copy cat psu shroud tempered glass look every other case manufacturer has fallen into line with to cater to the masses. they should have made that psu shroud removable but i'd say it's for structural support since they did away with the drive cage that supplied this support in the older R series cases. they still haven't given the option to change the front power "led" from blue.... i also miss the solid feel of the R4's front door with it's magnetic latching system. just felt smoooooth. if you had one, you know what i mean. i feel let down by this case. I like the glass better than the acrylic. i love the solid top to maintain symmetry better. the top mod vents are pretty much my only gripe with the R5 other than no included filter if you take them off. other than the glass side and solid top, i think this case takes a step back. i dunno.....i doubt i get one.

i enjoy the PSU shroud, I honestly think cases without them look kind of trash. however, those cases that starve the fans are retarded *cough* s340. each to their own though. BOIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

when you use 5+ 3.5" HD's it really hampers the air flow from the front of the case. i loved the fractal defines because of the bottom 140mm fan mount to feed the gpu cool air when utilizing the drive cages. In this new case that shroud ruins that option. it has two points imho that are better than the R5/R4 and those are a true glass side panel and a solid top option that doesn't look unsymmetrical. both of these points are aesthetics and performance / functionality always trumps aesthetics (well it should).

yeah, I can see that airflow problem. however, i'm going to only be using like two drives, I was going to get the meshify c, but after seeing this, i think i will have to get this. i really like the wall, i think i can bring something really cool with case lighting.

it's nice don't get me wrong and will work perfectly for what you're going to use it for, but i myself would go for a smaller "lighter" case if that was all the hardware i was going to use. they'll probably do the Define C in the same fashion as this one if you feel like waiting. imo these cases were originally designed to hold a lot of hardware and to keep it quiet and cool while doing it. it seems they've gone cookie cutter with a case line that has become legend in the pc case world for being unique.

still using this case in 2021! love it so much and it was easy as cake to build in. i prefer this design to the newest define 7 even 🤔 feels like they went more for a corsair-y design on the 7

I rather fancy the black on the front panel. But....I also don't understand the need for the door on the front. Didn't the Define S just have a front panel with no door because they eliminated the 5.25" bay? Why not offer a variant of the R6 with that configuration?
@fostytou
@fostytou 7 жыл бұрын
They will. It will probably be called something like the design S 6 (or Meshify 6 if you are more geared towards that). The door is for silence, and the whole R model is geared toward quiet operation.

Right from the very start I really liked this chassis; I thought it was going to be the perfect chassis for my next upgrade, then I saw that hideous black front panel on a perfectly white chassis.... Why, why would any manufacturer put a black front panel on a white chassis? This isn't the same as putting a strip of black across the front - maybe on the inside a splash of black , it's not the same thing as when other manufacturers have done by adding another color to the chassis(e.g. NZXT H700i - White with a black interior,or the NZXT S340 black and red interior) , because the addition of the black panel seems to me that Fractal Design ran out of white ABS or paint and black was the only color left. As for the interior panel; Fractal Design has so many cool ideas that they've included in the relatively low price, how much of a price difference would there have been to include a removable front panel (or make the existing panel slide to open or close the front area).

Its funny the optical drive is the only reason I bought this case, I have a high end system so i want a modern premium case with tempered glass but theres not many with a 5.25 bay. I still have a lot of old games and software and family pictures on CDS
