Fractions Without The Fight
We are in our 5th-grade year with my oldest. We have been using Math-U-See from ‪@DemmeLearningPage‬since her 2nd-grade year. She has learned so much and has such a strong foundation in the basics of math that this year, she has been learning fractions without a fight. I have wondered many times about the Math-U-See system and I got very nervous when it split from the spiral method norms of her public school counterparts. I can tell you as someone who has sweated through those days that the mastery approach has allowed her to truly understand and conquer fractions with ease. Huge shout out to the folks at ‪@timberdoodleco‬ for supplying us with Math-U-See products in our custom Non-Religious Curriculum Kits.

Please share, what's your math situation like this year? Smooth sailing, not the worst, don't even ask?

I homeschooled for 3 years but my oldest has been back in public school for 2 years now and going BACKWARDS in math. I’m so devastated, but she and her dad are 100% against homeschooling again! So I’m going to have to work with her in the evenings and summers so she doesn’t get more behind! I’m hoping to use this and Zeta next year with her-during her 6th grade year. I’m hoping we can do 2 levels in 1 year-especially since she’s had exposure to these things already! I’m probably going to use Math with Confidence 4th grade with her this summer-and then go to Epsilon and Zeta… I’m happy to hear your daughter got two levels done in one year! Thanks for sharing!

We’ve been using a spiral math program and while I love it, I can see my kids forgetting stuff quickly so I’ve been debating on math u see since it’s a more mastery program. But I’m a giant chicken when it comes to swapping Curriculum

I have a toddler and she is the only reason I haven't purchased this program. She gets supplies like that EVERYWHERE and it makes it difficult to keep her out of her big bros activities and works. If the blocks were magnetized, maybe we could make it work. Would it be hard to glue magnets on one side and use on our white board (Like in their video)? I could even have a low white board for the toddler and all her fun magnet stuff, but then a taller one she can't reach for her brothers work.

The backs are open cavities, so it could be difficult. Have you looked into their digital toolbox?

Definitely checking this out. We're using Math w Confidence for my 5 year old. Which has been a great ease into our homeschooling journey. But for 1st grade my kiddo is going to need something more challenging.

My first grader is doing the Beta level which her sister did in 2nd. Multiple digit addition and subtraction. She's adding multiple digit numbers with regrouping. It blows my mind. She gets her math from her daddy for sure.

Hi there, I’m not sure if you’ll see this being it’s an old video; but it’s worth a try! How much of the “building” do you have your daughters do? Every time it says to build, just the first lesson and whenever your daughter needs it, etc? We just switched and love it, but because of the building of the fractions, lessons can take a while. My daughter is constantly asking if she has to build it, so sometimes I just have her use the fraction overlays for the first half, and whatever method she chooses for the rest… just curious what other do…

I don't make them do anything they don't need to do. If they can move faster, I'm all for it! That being said, as soon as they struggle, the first thing I do is pull out the blocks.

I have seen many videos lately of people complaining that their 4th and 5th graders math from other programs are taking like an hour a day. How long do you think it takes your daughter a day?
@MakingEverydayMagic
@MakingEverydayMagic Жыл бұрын
Probably 20 mins average. Less if she fully grasps it and it's an A-C sheet which is lesson specific. D-F can take longer since they're cummulative and cover more.

Average number of problems per sheet across the whole math-u-see program is 20. I don't know that I've ever seen more than that.

I been trying to decide between math u see and Saxon. I know math u see is mastery and Saxon is spiral. My question is with doing math u see do they forget what they did previous years? That’s my biggest worry.
@MakingEverydayMagic

Not in my experience, the skills build on each other so they do stay in use. My oldest just moved into decimals, and one of the review sheets lesson has a section that goes back over fractions from the previous level.

Math is happening, we are using Math U See Primer and my son finds it pretty easy but boring. I have to make deals (like after math we can do science) to get him to get his work done. He is still young so I don't push much and allow breaks as often as he thinks he wants but I also expect him to do all his subjects, not just the "fun" ones.

I let my youngest go as quickly as she wanted through primer. I think she got through it in the 2nd half of pre k, so 1 semester. We don't ever do all of the sheets, it is a lot and my girls usually have it by then.

@@MakingEverydayMagic we skip sheets sometimes, maybe I should skip through them faster than I am🤷🏻‍♀️ he does this thing where I’m pretty sure he’s acting like he doesn’t know the answer so I’m hesitant to skip ahead. Guess I could always go back if I need to….

We have an understanding, if they do sheet A with no or few mistakes, we skip to C, then continue every other one. We don't do lesson tests, just unit tests. I think the option to skip some helps motivate my girls to try harder.

Please tell me you'll be doing one of these for Beta! We just got to regrouping and it isn't going well 😬 I've been combining Math U See with Generation Genius Math and, though she looked like she got it, as soon as I stopped the video she blanked... we'll get there, but I'd love to see your approach and how your 1st grader got the regrouping.

I plan to! One of the things she did was use the leftover units (like the 5 in 15) to load up and "drive" the 10 next door, to the top of the tens column.

Hi! We are considering switching from Saxon to MUS. On average, how long does it take to complete a level?
@MakingEverydayMagic
@MakingEverydayMagic Жыл бұрын
A full level, I am assuming you mean a whole year. So far, all of the levels have been 30 lessons, one lesson a week. I will sometimes take a week for the unit tests. I believe there are 3 or 4 of them. So you could easily make it 34 weeks. This year, my oldest finished Epsilon (fractions) in 16 weeks because I let her work at her pace. We are attempting to schedule Zeta (decimals) the same way, 2 lessons per week. However, I'm not holding her to that if we need to go slower.

We are going thru Alpha, and it is taking FOREVER. I felt like I had to do every page tho, so I'm going to try your approach. Is she completely memorizing the math facts before moving on? Or do you keep moving and memorizing as you go? Thanks!
@MakingEverydayMagic
@MakingEverydayMagic Жыл бұрын
I'm not requiring memorization. I just want her to be able to do the math. Fingers, blocks, number line they all work for me. She has memorized a great deal just through repetition, not because I required it.
