Share with us, which math program clicked for your kids? Or didn't. Why do you think that is?

Thank you so much for showing this to us and being very informative. I was practicing math with my girl and to her seems to be her best interest and comes easy. She is 5 her and her birthday is February. this year ( August) we are moving to alpha unless I try math with confidence, bc she is flying through primer already. I got it just for fun for her but just so I can see where she is at level wise so I know for kindergarten what to use that's appropriate which isn't to hard but yet not to easy so I can challenge her a little bit. Even though the sample placement test they have online / their website said to get alpha I at the time was like no way lol, I just didn’t agree because technically it’s aimed for first graders. So I still did primer just as an over view to see exactly where she is but I didn’t expect my daughter to fly through it sooo quickly which is great, so I am going to order alpha as they recommended to us for this year kindergarten. But then here i go, I then came across math with confidence and I love how it goes over money, subtracting, addding, counting, shapes, etc and it’ just seems like a faster paste then what primer was but I'm not sure if it's because primer was just to easy for us?! just I’m not sure what’s after math with confidence once we do finish with them. as with math you see I feel like it’s easier as in if someone wants to go in “ order “ so to me it’s easier to know what is next. So my few questions to you is. 1. have you used math with confidence before and if so how did you like it ? 2. Did it seem more engaging since it uses more materials/ hands on items then just blocks like alpha ? 3. do you think it be less intimidating for a 5 year old who isn't technically " mature " for the alpha to sit there and all those pages? So almost like you said with your daughter mine is the same if it's too much she will lose interest. She can only do 20mins a day. math with confidence there is only one page she has to do because the rest is just hands on with math materials to keep her engaged. Thank you so much and happy homeschooling mama!!

I haven't ever used the math with confidence. MUS does cover things like money and time, you can check the table of contents online and they're listed close to the ends of each level. My youngest did primer in a semester as well.

Oh my goodness your daughter is doing so well! Don’t worry about the handwriting, my daughter is nearly six and we are just now thinking of beginning some handwriting practice, it just seems like it all becomes so much, and I’d rather their hands get tired doing math rather than practicing neat writing. :) So far my oldest daughter began MUS primer at 3 1/2 and then went into MUS Beta, because she just flew through the Primer and was bored with it. Then we switched to Saxon 54 after Beta was completed, and with a couple weeks until her 6th birthday, she is halfway through Saxon 54. I admit that I was sad to move away from MUS because that is the math program that worked for me during my homeschool upbringing. But all kids have different needs I guess. 🥺 I miss Steve’s math videos! So much easier! But she likes reading the lessons herself and then the No-frills drills and done. My second daughter is 3 1/2 and a dozen lessons in on MUS primer, and I am trying to decide what path she will take as she grows. But MUS gives kids such an incredible foundation in math, good luck in your amazing homeschool journey!! Your videos are amazing!!

Thank you so much! We love MUS and it seems to work well for us but I'm willing to adjust if needed. You're exactly right that different kids have different needs. Being able to adjust to what suits them best is an amazing gift of homeschooling.

My Pre-Ker just finished mathematical reasoning for kindergarten. We're switching to Beast Academy for the first grade level because I feel like the way they teach will work for both her and her older brother.

How should I know whether to start with primer or Alpha? My child will be 6 but never done any formal math lessons.

I believe that Timberdoodle has placement tests to help you decide where to start on their website.

the only thing that i feel my almost 6yo will have a hard time with this kindergarten year is WRITING. He's very hesitant with drawing and writing, but intelligent as far as math. Do you think we would be able to skip Primer and slowly work through Alpha until he improves writing his numbers? or should we use Primer?

I liked how much primer focused on the blocks and very basic principles. If you do a quick search here, I have videos on both and there's a placement test on the Timberdoodle site. I wouldn't push the writing too much. He'll get there in time.

Do you think it would be better to start in Alpha and go through it quickly or jump into Beta and take it slowly? My son is finishing up Math with Confidence (has about 5 weeks left) 1 and placed in Alpha… ❤

I would look into the AIM levels that MUS offers. Basically it's like a quick start to get you up to speed. If you don't feel like that's the right answer, personally I prefer to go faster a level lower.

We love Math-U-See! My 4 year old daughter breezed through the Primer. The blocks make it so easy to understand. We have moved on to the Alpha.

You can always slow down or take twice as long as intended. You can adjust as needed.
