Yeah, but as soon as this ship gets into close range with something more agile, its dead. The cannons also have hard limits on their maximum effective range because the shells travel so slowly

The good part about flying a heavy is if you get killed, it's likelier that the opponents made a mistake, than that you did.

I main this ship and yes it struggles with agile ship especially the ones that can blink but as long as you play smart, you will be a very scary opponent to your enemies. Recommend you buddy up with a leviathan and communicate each other often to prioritise targets. Trust me it works crazy well when pushing and defending lanes

I'd say it's actually more effective up close due to the lack of lead time & scary amount of DPS if you can hit your target. Your actual predators are more long range attack ships like Displacer or Watchman who can just weave your artillery while your hull soaks up every one of their shots. Up close it's like a fat Brawler.

Honestly I have some good luck in CQB if they charge so fast that they basically get stuck alongside me, having to gain enough speed to pull away, putting them right in front of my broadside for several seconds, especially if I start pusing against them to lock them in place. As for slow shell speeds, that just fits into this ship's true niche: taking out other heavies, even at long range as these ships have large target profiles and slow speeds. Also really good at dislodging a sniper who's gotten too comfortable, since the Destroyer (I think) has equal range to all the sniper ships.

It's a tossup for me, I like the Leviathin's ability to cope with most ships really well (it's cannons are also really good at decloaking stealth ships because you can spray in the general direction of where you saw them) but the Destroyer is somewhat specialized to be REALLY good against other big ships. It outranges all big ship guns, which also makes it good for dislodging snipers as it has equal range.

Yuck, I've not had too much bad luck at close range with the destroyer, but getting in close for a brawl, especially with a blink-capable ship, goes against this ship's main purpose: wrecking other heavies at long range and fending off slower mediums like the Pioneer.

Destroyer is scary at around 5K. it's easy pickings at 15K. Only some very select ships can manage it up close, but except for raider and brawler, those are also much better off at longer ranges.

Vinkbram I think I'd argue that. The Destroyer's guns don't deal additional damage closer than 15k and can reach out all the way to 25k. Sure, you're not hitting a lifter or raider at that range, but the vast majority of ships are hitting you at their longest range damage at 15k. Sit at 20k and you're only really dealing with snipers and missiles. At 16k, you don't really need to worry about attack from... Protector, Equalizer, Paladin, Raven, Sentinel, Executioner, Persecutor, Raven, Basilisk, Colossus, Brawler, Disruptor, Black Widow, Ghost, Gladiator, Hunter, Enforcer, Raider, Venturer, Superlifter, and Infiltrator. The Reaper, Interceptor, Pioneer, Punisher, and Leviathan can hurt you with cooldown. Endeavor can continuously tickle you. Watchman, Overseer, Guardian, and Paragon can put some hurt on you. So long as you practice your marksmanship, getting closer than 10k is throwing away all of your advantages and rolling around in vulnerability.

I know from talking to people, light cannons at close range is the way to go. I try using it at long range, but fail :P

Zarkaithnia I'm not one to tell ya how to play, but I would highly recommend you take a Destroyer to co-op and practice your shots at 15k. Takes practice, but I promise you, your kill/death ratio will start to *shine.*
