You are probably thinking what is this guy talking about I now what I am doing I have seen plenty of tutorials on this. I see so many youtube videos on how to frag this, how to frag that, one coral I see the most is zoanthids. AND 9 out of ten of these videos is showing you how to do it the wrong way and in a way that is extremely dangerous and could hospitalize you especially if your working with toxic corals like zoanthids. I will show you what you NEED to do to prepare for fragging and then an actual demonstration of how to frag zoanthids a toxic coral the Smart, Efficient and RIGHT way! For an easier and faster fragging experience I highly recommend using Ecotech marine's Coral Propagation Kit. Marine-aquarium hobbyists should always wear protective gloves and eye protection when working, or fragging corals in your reef tank.

The safety part of this is spot on. People used to talk about cooking their like rock or washing or scrubbing under hot water to get rid of aiptasia or other unwanted stuff. Better make sure there are no palys or zoas on it. Palytoxin inhalation is no joke and can kill you even as little as micro grams.

Aside from the lack of safety precaution, one thing that really bothered me with the other zoa propagation tutorials out there was the fact that none of them showed footage of the frags opening up after it's placed back into the water, so thank you for including that

He brings up an important point, do a water change or use carbon if you are fragging zoas and palys inside your tank. My friend fragged some green button palys and he didn't realized how toxic they were and it killed 2 fish and some corals over night.

Marathoning. Another great video. When you buy new corals, do you just dip them I. Water with iodine in it and how much. I guess how do you prepare the dip? Thanks
@coralfish12g
@coralfish12g 9 жыл бұрын
You usually take a gallon of tank water and add the suggested dose on the bottle, like half a capful. Then you stir it. Be sure to wash the coral off with clean water after the dip so the iodine does not get into the tank.

Would it work to place frag plugs around the colony, letting the zoanthids spread to the plugs and just removing the plugs? You'd avoid having to cut anything but I suppose there might then be tearing/ripping along the colony and plug.

Hi George. Another excellent video. I have, what may be, an ignorant question, since I haven't started my tank yet. When you want to add coral to your tank and put them in their permanent positions, do you always glue the frag plugs to your rock, or can you remove the actual polyps from the frag plugs and glue them directly to the rock? Thanks. Jeff
@coralfish12g
@coralfish12g 9 жыл бұрын
You can glue them permanently but you better be sure that's where you want them. Overall, you can still pull them off or break them off if you glue them, but I wouldn't because you will want to move it and reaquascape occasionally.
@jeffpuha8187
@jeffpuha8187 9 жыл бұрын
coralfish12g Hi George. Thanks for getting back to me. The reason I asked you about gluing the coral directly to the rock is that I don't want the ugly frag plugs on the rock. I doubt I would be doing much rearranging of rock and coral after I get everything set-up the way I want it. Unlike a lot of reefers I've seen here on KZbin, I don't think I'll be into fiddling with the aquascape or livestock. I plan to start off with just a few coral and see how quickly they grow and spread. Then I'll gradually add one or two more at a time until I feel there are enough. Does that sound like a viable plan?

Jeff Puha Yes, sounds good
@jmdelira87
@jmdelira87 9 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeff. I'm a fellow reefer and just wanted to chime in on your question about the frag plug. In all honesty, you're better off placing the whole plug in the tank. Many reasons why but you could easily damage zoas removing the plug. It would also be very hard to glue the zoa directly to the main rock. You can however, remove them and place them on a little piece of rock and then glue rock to rock. The reason I recommend placing the plug directly on the rock is because the zoanthids will soon cover the entire plug and surrounding areas and you won't even see a plug. You don't always have yo glue it either. Find a place the plug falls right into and place it there. Hope this helps.

your videos are super helpfull for me, currently learning about sea water aquaristic. also pleassantly well made and presented without rambling. but i was thinking. couldnt you easly save yourself and your animals the hassle of a water change, when you have a third hand syphoning the water with the poisonous secretions out of the tank, before it can spread? okay, one more thing, and thats really the only criticism i can think of: just openly mentioning that a company is sponsoring you, would feel much more honest than blatant product placement and name dropping. ;)

I try not to make viewers sit through an assortment of advertisements, but when I know or come across a product that will be the best for what I am explaining in the video it is definitely worth my time and others time to be mentioned in the video. O cool thanks. By the way do u have bristle worms. I'm fairly new to saltwater tanks. And I saw that I have about three or so during the day. Should I be worried? And if so what do I do

Anthony Sadler They are not bad as long as they are small. If you start seeing some really big ones then start removing them but overall the little ones are technically good for clean up crews.

Most of the good quality kits use high end surgical stainless steel components that are impervious to short durations in saltwater. Simply rinse off when done and wipe dry.

wow you are advertising a kit. Nice job. And no i am not positive about that. The way you frag is 100% identical to 9 of 10 Videos on youtube. Nuff said.

Well maybe some stuff has changed. Last time I checked there were people using bare hands and no eye wear. That is mostly what I was referring to, the safety precautions.

CoralFish12g youre doing a good job bro dont worry about it. Ive seen several videos on fragging and i have to agree that most of them are doing it wrong. And yeah maybe some go through the same process as you do but they dont go in depth with detail like you do on the importance of safety and the water change after doing an in-tank-fragging

That deff how not to frag a zoa. That's why u get frag tank so u don't do in tank fragging. If anything take the rock out and do it right

Sometimes the rock is not removable. I know its not ideal but this is the best way for in tank fragging.

You realize these are zoas right they grow like weeds you dont need to spend 10 minutes fragging them. Rip them off with a tweezer and glue them down done. This kit is made for advanced corals.

Yeah you are right, most people have zoas though and the point of the video was to show how dangerous they can be when fragging.
