Thanks for taking another look at FE, Peter! Great video! It can't really be a tribute to BSG without humanity struggling to survive and fighting amongst themselves, so the whole survival slant comes from there, packaged together with a more traditional RTS approach and a touch of fleet management to boot. Maybe it's an RTS Adventure or something, who knows, maybe genre-defying is smart, maybe it isn't, I guess we'll see =)

This is basically the game I have been looking for in terms of RTS. User @blayas5239 says below: "Physicalized resources are an excellent concept as they create depth in logistics, supply routes." Reminds me of the logistics of the DISTANT WORLDS series, and that is one of my favorite things in that entire game. Me and Blayas5239 both adore this, and it will be a factor for me when it comes to purchasing your game. Again, thank you. While indie gaming may crap out turds like The Coffin of Andy and Leyley, it can also produce gems. Like Fragile Existence.

@MattZaharias seems like a mix between the HW2 setup and DoK with the terrain being a factor for further tactics. Which is good IMO. I liked that aspect of DoK but felt that with the shift to a 2d plane of movement it lost a lot of the tactics present in HW1-2(we don't mention cataclysm round here lol)

visualized resources and transporting them to bases and requiring them to be physically in your stockpile to use at any given location is a level of logistics that opens up a wide range of possibilities from smuggling to piracy and so much more. It's something I've wanted to see in RTS games for a long time. It makes me wonder if we will ever get a game that takes the base building aspects that are becoming increasingly common in RPG games and make a full hybrid RTS/RPG similar to what has been attempted with RTS/FPS hybrids, but with full unit training and command. So far the closest has been games like Pathfinder Kingmaker which added kingdom management and War of the Rightous which added in Heroes of Might and Magic style armies.
@perafilozof9 ай бұрын
Hi and thanks for sharing your thoughts on this subject. Indeed I do agree that kind of gameplay is quite rare with RTS games, usually reserved for management and city building games. Satisfactory is an incredible example of a highly successful mix of base building with logistics attached to an FPS game.

I made a similar point about missing the 'tangible' elements of games. I loved the Original Command and Conquer, The harvester container physically interfacing with the refinery was a beautiful touch, far more interesting than the ore truck just dumping into a pile that never changed. I also really love the workers in Ostriv building each building, consuming the pile of resources and each building having dozens of tiny physical stages.

Planetary Annihilation / Homeworld cross breed looks nice. My Recommendations based on what I see here: Make planets bigger. Mods are a must. Co-Op will be the way to play. With AI or Human. What will your dumb AI ally do next? can you give the AI recommendations? Sight based sensors for recognizing there is something out there then sensor bubble to ID what it is. smaller objects are harder to ID and bigger ones you can see the paint job with the ship name. seems silly that a cap ship that is less than a planet away cant see another cap ship. not seeing a stealth bomber would make sense if it is not accelerating. ballistics should be near impossible to see. missiles have fire until they go ballistic. think Honorverse for space combat.

Hi and thank you for sharing your impressions of the game with us. I am supper happy to hear I could change your mind and how you saw it. Okay, this just gave me an idea for an alien invasion story. Basically, the aliens land and take resources, and then just as quickly vanish, without any explanation. However, the aliens leave behind technology information in a compatible digital device, seemingly as compensation. Then, another alien fleet from a different species arrives soon after, doing the same thing, but appears to be in pursuit of the others. But once it figures out the humans have the technology left behind by those they were pursuing, they turn hostile. It's later learned that what is essentially happening is the same story as Prometheus, and the whole reason this group was chasing the other group was because they were sharing technology with primitives.

so, game is essentially 2 layers of 2D planes (surface of a sphere) around each planet? Looks like that from the video. Or is there 3D aspect to it (i mean gameplay, not purely visual)? Also the sensor bubble looks realy small concidering how easy is to detect things in space with no obstacle inbetween. Moving materials physically - depends on implementation. I think its great unless you have to micromanage everything like connecting buildings together (its fine in Settlers or Transport tycoon where its core mechanics, but not when you have other things to do) so if supply chains connect themselves automatically (both routes and units to move it), it would be good, especially possibilities to disrupt supply lines . (Sins of Solar Empire had something like that limited to trading centres so you could limit income by ambushing trade lines... was nice addition, but mostly visual as most resources were still universal pool telelported around)

Bi and thanks for sharing your thoughts on this game with us. From what I could see and understand from the developer the planets are in 3D space at least to the depth of their size as ships can go to any point above them. Naturally land gameplay is 2D. And by the look of it building of orbital stations has some depth to it, following the planets size and curvature. As for more info on the logistics I will bring it when available. Sensor range is a game mechanic, it is not using real world physics so it can allow for more options for gameplay.

Of course, I am aware that the VERY short sensor range was chosen for gameplay reasons. But you can't help but wonder how the spaceships navigate safely through space if they are so "short-sighted".
@perafilozof9 ай бұрын
To that good point I would say that ships can use their long range tech to navigate but not see exactly what they are finding on long range scopes. So basically you know there is something of some size there so you don't run into it, but only at short range do you know is it a ship or a rock

Thanks for another great video! I remember wishlisting this a while ago and forgot all about it. The only red flag for me is the FTL like system where you're constantly being followed and rushing to move on to the next planet. Maybe I misunderstood? Overall I am curious to see how this turns out.

honestly the extra level of logistics is something i really love. on From The Depths it felt like an actual design choice if you wanted to add more ammo storage on your warships. it meant you can last longer in battle but risk a massive ammo detonation. but sadly they simplified the logistics in that game so having ammo logistics, fuel and so on was less important.

That's not how sensors work though. While it is true that we can see other galaxies beyond the milky way with our naked eye, contriving a fog of war isn't merely a gameplay choice - it potentially simplified AI related load on your CPU. This could easily be rationalised as ships can have various levels of stealth, requiring any combination of scouting, sensor upgrades & specialised ships.

Hi and thank you for sharing your thoughts on this game. I do understand what you mean, but you have to understand something in the background of game development. Especially, indie game development. These folks don't have any backing, or investors, they make their games on their own time and money most of the time. So if they didn't post publicly they would have a hard time finding: a) publishers b) audience c) get feedback. Driving interest online , for example number of wishlists on Steam, makes a game more likely to find a publisher who will help the developer with everything necessary to successfully finish and publish a game.

Unlimited sensor range is not the problem it’s that they don’t implement time dilation for the sensors. For instance warping I’m over a million miles away your sensors should take a long time detect the warp signature of a ship approaching. And obviously exiting warp a few thousand miles away or hundred miles away should be more instant and accurate. After all our satellites can see billions of light years away it’s just light has spent all that time traveling for our tech to see. So should be same.

But seeing the interesting concept of Fragile Existence, I think I might be ready to get back into strategy. Wonder if it will be possible to build up a big enough fleet to maybe turn around and shoot back... find a new Earth to hide on, or perhaps, stumble onto it after a gruelling final battle. Homeworld avoided this problem by having ships be both the units and buildings from which those units are made. So the smaller ships had to physically fit those larger buildings. @@perafilozof You wanna bet the go-to tactic of dealing with ground bases will be to simply bombard them from orbit? Most of the time there will be no reason to waste time on dropping your units on the planet, setting up base, building ground forces, and only then attacking enemy ground base. The fact you can conduct a drop means you already got space superiority over the planet so why waste time. I think this game will be an excellent case study for why ground combat makes no sense in a setting where spaceships are a thing.
