Fragments - Heraclitus

Hello all and welcome to my new series Marginalia where I do a deep dive into various texts, and sometimes chapters of texts, which are particularly influential on the history of thought. In this first video, I tackle the fragments of the enigmatic early Greek philosopher Heraclitus.

Seems like an interesting idea. Looking forward to more of these. And regarding the rejection of conventional morality: does fragment 102 necessarily imply that moral divisions are simply human convention? The way I understood it before was as saying that God correctly knows everything that is good and just to be that way. While men consider some things correctly and others incorrectly. Maybe this is just a misunderstanding that would be cleared up by reading the original lines of text (in greek).

Correct - he definitely is not a Protagoras or Gorgias. However I was trying to highlight the epistemic issue which emerges from his claims. If we reject both the common opinions on right and wrong and human methods of calculus (duty, benefit, pleasure, pain, and suffering) then by what means can we come to understand what is good or just? I would argue that Plato falls afoul of the same issue, and for both a kind of almost religious transcendence - through Heraclitus’s Logos or Plato’s contemplation on the form of the good - is necessary.
