I got to a point where I owned well over 80 fragrances. Then I started to sell off the redundant ones. My goal is to have 50 tops. If I see something I really want to have, I force myself to sell a bottle first. Not because I can't afford another bottle, but because it just doesn't make sense to have more. At the end of the day, even with 3 decent fragrances (i.e. Sauvage, Acqua di Gio Profumo and Spicebomb) in your wardrobe, you still outshine most men, as they don't wear a fragrance on a regular basis anyway. Getting in financial trouble because of expensive fragrances? I'd say focus on your mental health before you worry about smelling decent. No judgement, just plain honesty.

On a side note, I believe a person should have no more than 10 fragrances on hand; two for each season, and an extra two for special occasions.

This topic speaks to consumerism in general not just fragrance. Some people just always want the new thing and will spend whatever it is to get it. Its not your fault for reviewing an item. People need to take 'personal responsibility' for their actions.
@camrenac3552
@camrenac3552 6 жыл бұрын
People need to realize that fragrance is only a little part of your life, you can wear the most amazing fragrance and don't feel confident if they get no compliments whether it be due to your appearance or personality in general, on the other hand some people can wear a fresh simple scent and have style , aesthetics and seem approachable and get many compliments. That being said don't get yourself in debt because of fragrances and it's very easy to get in the hype and try many different fragrances, there's so much more to fragrances. As far as women goes, trust me women LOVE fresh scents, for the most part women will compliment you if you're a well put together man even if you have a $2 fragrance on. Conclusion fragrance is just the icing on the cake. Significant but not everything. Go to gym, wear nice clothes and carry yourself like a man, instead of buying the most expensive fragrances because of their "complimentary" factor.

This is great that you are addressing this. I know you and many reviewers do tell us where or how to get fragrances at a discount or that it can be found cheaper, which is great, but if a person just can't afford it, they have to be able to go without until they can. I Definitely look forward to part 2 of this.

Choices and moderation are the key DracDoc. I have been following you for a number of years now, and your first video I saw was with your displaying a can you use to save change and mentioned "disposable income". I feel that you did a great thing by being transparent in sharing that, as well as you have never come off advising someone that have to purchase one juice or another. I appreciate your concern for us as viewers, and believe me I am enjoying some of the juices that I have discovered and purchased within the last few years (Bacarrat 540, Amouage Jub XXV, YSL Tuxedo), but all purchases were made after several test runs and decants and purchased with disposable income. at some point, common sense and choices have to be used in what we choose to purchase. Those decisions and consequences rest at our feet, not yours. continue your great reviews and thanks for your concern as a responsible "frag-head".

Great topic good sir, I felt like for awhile I was addicted to getting new Fragrances so I had to revaluate my spending habits bcus I have a family so now I just stick to buying a few decants every time I get a paycheck and I set a limit for every month and I give a week before I pull the trigger to really think about whether I really want it or not and when I want buy a bottle I really really love I usually go to the Fragrance groups and get the best best deal I can possibly find but other than that I will never use a credit card to buy a bottle or money I don't have, it just helps u feel better about a purchase, thanks for the video tho bro, helps allot of people especially those with big priorities like wife and kids and big bills and car payments and stuff. My wife always says, u can't eat a Fragrance or put it in the car for gas so definitely have to set what's most important. Take care

This topic is really on point. I saw Dell's video back when he first posted, and I thought it was great to delve into this touchy subject. We as adults have to be fiscally responsible. Whatever purchases I make, It will definitely not come before my basic necessities. I enjoy your suggestions the same as I do many other well respected reviewers, but I won't purchase a full bottle if I know I don't have the funds. If buy a sample of a fragrance and I enjoy it and get good feedback, then I'll do my due diligence, research and find a price I can live with. I have yet to buy a full bottle of most of these hyped fragrances. Cody, keep doing you. Your a great reviewer.

Great topic. I touched on this problem myself with my channel. I've been doing a lot better recently. With so many splits going on, there is usually not many reasons to buy full bottles. When you buy 100 ml a month or more, you quickly get bogged down with way too much juice. If you make smart choices, you don't need a large collection. Of course, be sure to watch bpwool's channel. He doesn't like much of anything, and that should get your finances quickly back to where they need to be.

Hey Dracdoc--- man I really enjoy watching your reviews man; and as a matter of fact, some fragrances I bought are based on the excitement you brought along with reviewing that particular fragrance and alot of times the fragrances are pretty dag on good man. To me you're always straight forward without twisting the truth to make me go out and buy a fragrance because it's hyped or the most popular fragrance---you along with some others have always kept it straight forward and never sugar coated anything so keep on doing your thang/thing man.

Although reviewers such as you aren't the problem, collectively the KZbin community does have a strong influence on people wanting to collect everything they see. That's what's driven me in collecting all that I have. Gradually though I've learned to live with samples. They satisfy my need for something new. Then I can decide if it's really worth the price for a full bottle. Another thing that doesn't come across online is these massive collections KZbin reviewers often have are built over many years. It's hard not to want everything now if you're just starting out. That can quickly get you into trouble.

right speach .... love when you say: "i´m not influencer, i don´t like the word influencer!" ... me as well .. i rather listen to your objectivity and advice, because you stay faithul to yourself as you have always been. ... i really feel the virtual world of instagram/youtube influencers is: the one big theater of selfcentered indulgence .... a bit unhealthy to believe and adore own body that much .... that´s their addiction .... and true with perfumes and addiction as well, that´s why you recommend and review something instead of pushing someone to buy something as a: must have possession ..... it´s crazy blind thing of this virtual world ... their perfomance (jeremy style) can influence someone .... but it´s only a hyped product, nothing else or nothing that i can live without ...

Great topic. I don't consider myself a collector and I own about 32 fragrance that I truly enjoy. When I feel I want to test something and I enjoy it I look at what I own and see which one I could sell first before buying another bottle and I never buy retail that way I also save a few dollars. Another thing that I don't do is going to Ross, TJ Maxx and buy those discounted fragrances because will add up before you know it.

I agree. The moment a hobby is not financed from disposable income and starts to drain your emergency fund or has even worse impacts like making you miss rent it has become an addiction. Draw the line, seek out help and do a reality check. Buying and hoarding fragrances is probably even more satisfying than actually wearing a perfume until the bottle is empty. And that is inherently dangerous. I sold off my MTG collection to a large extent and poured most of that money into fragrances. But I realized that I would keep on spending the money I would have set aside for fragrances in the *next* month if I saw a good deal. The problem is, that when you want a lot you will find a good deal quite often. I basically bought one fragrance every two weeks on average since I started to get more heavily into fragrances. I currently have 35, of which I paid retail for 9 because they are just not available on the grey market or in a sale. I have a solid emergency fund but instead of growing it I was shrinking it because I worked on a hairline budget, pouring every free penny into perfume. I put myself on a one month fragrance buying moratorium. I failed it thrice after two weeks at best (ridiculous price drops on things I had on my buylist with stock running low, prices immediatly bounced back after my purchase) but I am confident I will do it this time with eight days to go. I think that it is important to keep one's spending in check, keep a budget and draw the line when something gets out of hand. There is absolutely no benefit in being the first to own a fragrance, only pitfalls of not having it tested enough and not getting better prices a while into the life of the fragrance. I started to sell fragrances I did not enjoy anymore because even if I lose some money on them it is still better than having something standing around gathering dust. I am planning to offer decants of the larger bottles I have because with a collection of that size it is very unlikely that I will ever finish a 100ml bottle in the next five years. It hurts to give something away but as I said, something unused is just a waste to have.

Very practical issue and your advise is on point. Let those with ears listen cause a lot of people see things and take them at face value. Some people have the excess cash to splurge, others get through special discounts, others get for free to promote. While fragrances are really good its just part of overall personality. Many people hear the compliment factor of a fragrance and jump right in only to be disappointed cause they did not get a single compliment. I always admire your honest take in all your reviews i have watched.

Great words just like Dell. Fragrance enthusiasts, collectors and reviewers should always be mindful re: financial capabilities/stewardship vs fragrance race in all its aspects. Is there a really “need” for this perfume or you just want it, then later, want more? I used to own 300+ bottles with rare and discontinued ones. Now I’m half left and the decluttering continues.

*Prioritize and decant.* Work frags (and cheapies) I get full bottles of. Wear them pretty much daily. Fragrances I wear occassionally (mostly weekends, holidays) I get decants, usually 10mls (they'll last a while believe it or not). Can still have a nice "collection" or variety of frags without spending thousands.

Wow. Good point. Like many things, people get their priorities out of whack in their hobbies or running with the pack to fit in. Personal reality for me is I now research newer or desired frags, and make a list. When I get to 10 or 15, I pick the most interesting one and check the notes. Having over 100+ fragrances, I found I ALREADY had a similar fragrance and it curves my desire to just buy more based off some of these reviewers. Many being marketers, Drac not included. Good content sir.

I’m with you Cody. I realize this problem occurring to many in the community and some just don’t know how to manage and go about it. It can be overwhelming if you don’t have self control. Like you,I only buy what I can afford nor have bought expensive frags at its full price. Maybe designers,yes,but they don’t break your bank unlike many niche frags out there. People need to prioritize. Bills,family obligations first before hobbies. Rule of thumb.

Thank u for this video. At one point of time I realize I was spending too much on fragrances. At first... It felt like an addiction that I just need to go and get the frags which are hyped in the fragrance community. As reality bites and when at one point of time I realize financial issues are at stake, I decided that I should only get 1 perfume per year. You are not an " influencer" bro you are just a reviewer of frags. You are in no way the cause of my addiction. To other fragrance addicts pls bear in mind all the hyped frags are not a must have ..spend if you only have extra to spare. I have found some of the most hyped frags in the web does not suit my taste (olfactory) Any way keep reviewing and keep up the good job bro.

I agree that the term "influencer" is less than ideal, since it doesn't really indicate what the party does. A reviewer reviews--simple enough. Reviewers are not at all responsible for viewers' and readers' spending habits, so please don't feel bad about that. It should go without say that viewers of your and other reviewers' videos should sample fragrances carefully and only buy what they can reasonably afford and will actually use a lot of. I envy the BG hookup haha, that and Saks are fragrance heaven. I stopped by both two Fridays ago.

don't feel bad about your reviews. Ultimately, when someone goes and spends their money on fragrances, they are making their own choice. They are responsible for their poor financial decisions. People need to analyze what they already have, and realistically assess if they truly need another fragrance. And if they really want that fragrance, they should set a goal for themselves, and buy a fragrance as a reward for something (example, finishing a personal project, cleaning up the home/apartment, finishing a long book, etc). *Especially* given the fact that there are decanting services, and free samples at department stores, etcetera, there's not really an excuse for people to be spending hundreds of dollars that they don't have every few months, buying fragrances that they will probably never go through a full bottle of.
@nameinvain6

The real problem is people just jump to full bottles. There are plenty of reputable decanters where you can purchase a 5ml decant that will last a month depending on if you rotate through other fragrances. Its a much cheaper way to be able to obtain and wear more expensive fragrances. That's what I do.

In my opinion, your reviews are far from overly hyping or pushing fragrances in a manner where you would think those things. It comes off much more "thought through" on this channel. And you don't shoot videos with monstrous shelves of systematically ordered fragrance bottles in the background that might trigger some audiences. Thumps up for that, and good points.

I would first check a sample and most of the time I would not want to own a full bottle. It’s just a hobby as long as it does not become obsession it’s ok.

What about women? My obsession began when my cousin wore CoCo madmesulle and EVERYONE literally EVERYONE complements her on a daily basis. So I’ve been trying for the past 12 years to find a Fragrance that “beats” it. But it doesn’t matter what I wear, no one compliments me on my scents. I always think “this will be my signature” but if I don’t receive any compliments I have to keep going until I find THE ONE.

You have helped me spend some money on great fragrances..... But I am well aware of the money I spend and my budgets. As a responsible adult should be lol. Great video but don't beat yourself up over something like this either. It is nice to see some reviewers with a conscience though.

While I respect people who say “ I never pay more than X for a frag”, I find it hard to believe on the one hand and unnecessary on the other. It’s all firstly about what are you capable of buying and how do you want to collect or even to collect at all. Some people are fine with literally only 2-4 frags! Others own dozens upon dozens of scents. Someone saying “I never pay over 150 for Killian” is either lying or doesn’t own the genuine article unless perhaps it’s a decant or sample. Again, it’s relative to income, desire and comfort level. The typical 21 year old has no real need and perhaps is rightfully unaware of Xerjoff or By Killian at $450 to $600 a bottle. Most of us fall into middle of the road with some cheapies, followed by many various level designer frags followed by niche and indie or designer luxury perfumes! Addiction has a cure. Turn of the faucet and set some real and important and achievable goals by necessity! Great vid Cody!

I found very quickly that there are so many great, CHEAP fragrances that smell and perform almost identically to fragrances which cost $300+ a bottle. I made it a quest to seek out these fragrances for my collection. I did spend $280 on a bottle of Aventus just once. While I think it is worth the price, I found another fragrance which is just about as good for $30 a bottle. If you have the money get the Aventus. If you don't look for a cheap alternative. Really, no one is going to care but you anyway!

Great points man, I don't get it either. Letting little bottles drag your life down is silly, they're meant to be enjoyed as a compliment to one's life

Don't feel bad,, if people are like that they would be like that regardless if they were buying fragrances, clothes, art, watches.. whatever... It's just a personality type disorder.. If they are irresponsible, they are irresponsible..

I can't agree with you. You are a fragrance reviewer, not someones parent.. Your channel is about reviewing fragrances just as people review watches, art, food, or any other products. You should not let peoples poor life decisions influence your channel. If someone is a moron, they are a moron.. You won't be able to influence them regardless of what you do.. You never were even much of a hype artist anyway, you always had objective reviews.. You never let any stupidity effect your channel... Keep it that way bro.

dracdoc It’s the fragrance companies and reviewers feeding the hype frenzy. They offer free fragrances for review. Reviewers then turn around and use catch words. It’s impeccable, this one is beyond biblical proportions etc. At one time it used to be samples and some bottles reviewed. You knew they were purchased for most part because 3-5 years ago a bottle given for review was almost unheard of. Cheapest form of advertisement for Indie Houses especially. KZbin and IG reviewers have consumers attention. Exposure. So a few bottles is worth it. Some reviewers are sponsored. Also have links to Amazon and such and receive commission. I personally have many fragrances. I have been a Frag head over 36 years. My very first fragrance purchase was when I was 14. Pierre Cardin. I have also spent a lot of money. So have reviewers. So free product is very appealing. I see it more now on Instagram. Reviewers are claiming they are against free stuff are now receiving free stuff and luring with giveaways. Just my two cents....

Cologniano i hear ya, but even that isn't an excuse.. That is how most products are in this world. Hyped, marketed etc.. Companies spend millions of dollars on marketing and ways to get people to buy stuff.. People have to get their priorities straight.. if someone is going into debt over scented water that means they are a moron and it's no ones fault but their own..
