Larry Haun is such a legend. He was 79 in this video. He had complete mastery of every aspect of framing and construction. He's still humble, kind and respectful. He was still just showing up for work every day and getting the job done.

What a wonderful man. I grew up in the trades and worked beside my dad and brother for many many years. Carpentry always gives me a since of pride and accomplishment. I really wish the world and High Schools would promote trades instead of college. Push a pencil or push a shovel... I chose the shovel and have no regrets. I made a lot of money and really hoaned in on the craft. From framing complex angles to finish carpentry, I love every bit of it, everyday. My dad always said: Like the ol saying goes, Find a job you love and you will never work another day in your life. RIP dad...RIP Larry

Watching the Larry of Haun over the last several days has created a game changer state of mind for me. From this moment on I'm gonna scale back my habits of routine mathematics and reaching for specialty tools at work. It seems that with a general knowledge of yesteryear's carpentry methods and basic ingenuity put to practice that things can be profoundly simplified. The other guy in this video is a product of his generation , much like myself and thats nothing for us to be ashamed of. Three generations of cookie cutter construction creates an army of cook cutter carpenters ! But i have a feeling right now that there's gonna be a revival/renaissance coming soon where all of us youngblood guys will begin readopting these incredible standards of practice, then things will come around full circle and when we become old and gray we'll all be framing and nailing back together the American Dream just like Larry.

The old tutorial videos with Larry and Joe framing up a house hammering in 16 pennies by hand and working faster than a modern crew will ever do are just amazing. Modern nail guns are faster for you an I but much more expensive and more cumbersome than banging in a nail. Also it looks like a good workout especially when they're on top of walls or framing up and entire roof joist, rafters, purlins and all.

In the Early 80's, lots of older guys had rigging axes or california framers with welded claws. For many years I used a old 24 oz. Plumb rigging ax a long handle and dremel cut waffle face. I used it for floor joist and for setting rafters/trusses. In between, I used a 21 oz. Dalluge. Both hammers had electrical tape just like Larry taught me!

17 years of working on residential builds... I've never seen framers lay out the plates first. Theyd just build the walls and stand them up as they go. Interesting. Good way to easily ensure things are straight and even. If they all fit when theyre laid out, theyll fit when theyre framed. I like it.

Watch Larry in this video series, intensely, how he two-hits the 16d nails. 16d, 3.5" ardox framing nails are way superior to pneumatic nailers. Line both kinds up on a 2x4 and saw through with a SawzAll. The 16d puts up a fight, the pneumatic concedes in a heartbeat. I never use nailers except for trim. Haun's nailing is accuracy and momentum. It's really not that fast or hard of a whack. It's the arc swing of the long handled Vaughan framing hammer coming down square on the nail head. One, two, done. It's getting square-on contact that's hard to get good at. If you try to kill the nail at a hundred miles an hour, you'll miss or mangle it. Just takes a relatively casual, fluid arc swing biased to accurate hit, and you'll see the 16d drives in halfway home in PT. Haun used to hammer all day and didn't tire out. One more identical hit and it's in. Move on to the next. He's got the nails bundled in his hand, nail heads up, production line ready. Every movement is predicated on maximum time and resource efficiency, making progress. No dithering around. Angle grinds the claws to stab and move lumber, no bending down. He was a machine.
