I love how you explain the why as well as the how (and that you are entertaining). Thank you for all of the videos! I would love to see a video on ways to fix shower drainage problems (without ripping out the shower floor if possible)! Thank you for responding as well! Penny

I'm in Australia and I'm following along cautiously. There are many differences between countries, so far Australia and Canada seem to be remarkably similar.

Canada is a lot colder. While that is a facetious statement, it's also quite true. I've seen a lot of Canadian videos where their construction standards and minimum practical requirements vastly exceed Australia. A good example if footings. Canada seems to require 4 foot deep footings due to the depth that soil freezes during the winter. This is generally unnecessary in Australia. Same with insultation. What is normal and acceptable in NSW, Australia would be mocked and derided in Canada because our needs are so much less than Canada's. One big area of caution is I believe that Australia's legal requirements for who can do electrical and plumbing work is MUCH stricter and more limited than Canada. However, overall I agree with your statement. I've been learning a lot from this and Holmes On Homes also.

Yeah. I brought the money pit house, I thought it needed a bathroom reno and ended up as a whole house gut and start over. Knob and tube wiring with lovely electrical splices wiithout junction boxes inside the walls and the like, Your channel has helped me avoid issues with my portion of the DIY that I feel comfortable completing, Especially drywall stuff. It has helped me a lot. I left the plumbing and electrical to the pros and I am so glad that I did. You did not mention in this video the importance of crowning your lumber. But cleared up the L stud and 3. Stud Mystery for me. You reminded me I really need to use nails on all the outside walls even if they were originally not load bearing because structural integrity and inspection scrutiny is important.. thanks for the great information Jeff.

I hear ya. I just bought a renovated 1971 home (w/ and updated open space kitchen) and thought everything was perfect, until I started living in it and noticed a lot of shortcuts the terrible renovation contractor did. House was inspected, but it's harder when it's a renovated home. Some big items include no hot water to the kitchen island faucet (contractor terminated the hot line in the attic and hooked both lines to cold), poor insulation in attic (contractors left open spots with no insulation) that needs an overhaul w/ air seal, new HVAC is so loud on the supply side (most likely needs to be reconfigured by professional), all doors are not properly sealed and squared, etc. I'm a big DIY'er and I have been fixing some of these items myself thanks to this channel and other channels as well.

Hey Jeff, long time watcher first time commenter. When you where measuring and saying to know the length of your tape measure. I use a method I feel is simplifies that. Both require addding. Maybe you will find easier and use yourself. 10 inches is the magic number Measure from one end in 10 inches make a mark. Now measure from the other end get your exact measurement and add 10 inches. Perfect Everytime. Hope you enjoy this method Clayton

This video os going to help me a lot. Thanks. I’m going to frame my basement. Should I pull up glued carpet first? It’s really thin and I’m not sure if I can frame right over this or not.

I am always confused by your 16 oc. You say mark an X on the side of the 16" mark, making the stud sit between 16" - 17 1/2". Isn't a stud 16" oc supposed to sit between 15 1/4" - 16 3/4"? Can anyone explain why Jeff does this?

Untreated cedar sauna for the basement would be nice to see. I'm really tempted to rent a truck and get some wood but i dont know a thing about carpentry. Just started purchasing tools at auctions to kind of force myself to man up since i never had anyone to teach me.

Question on interior walls that are not 90 degree corners. How big of a gap can you have between the studs in the corner that won’t effect finishing the drywall?

Is there a code for nail size on non-load bearing partition walls. Everything I read online says they need to be 3.25 inches length 16d (0.148 inches) diameter but the only framing nails for nail guns in the store are 3.25 inches length and 0.120.inch diameter. Am I missing something?

Scabbing the stud also prevents rolling of the top plate resulting in a flatter upper floor. This is real world stuff, when framing an entire house no one is going to the lumber yard and picking out lumber one piece at a time. You work with what you have and try to use common sense and critical thinking.

I love your channel and your content. But......I am so confused. It seems like you have changed your ideas about materials used and what is best for a certain project so much over the past while that i dont know what to believe. An example is subfloor for a basement. In one video you suggest drycore, In another you use a vapour barrier type material. I know things change a lot but my problem is what is the best materiald depends on how old a video I am watching from you. Like I said, confused!

It depends on budget. But also state of basement conditions. IE age and amount of moisture management needed. Also what type of thermal break you want
