I would suggest building a sound proof technical room under the stairs (with a door) great place to put a build in pressure washer, compressor, vaccuum, dust extraction, and other utilities for the garage. Just run ductwork to where you need it. Saves a bunch of clutter and noise when enjoying your new workshop! Love the vids, great to see progress!

I have an idea not mentioned in the video. I think you should put a door on the back of the garage to access the space under the stairs and store future outdoor stuff in there, lawn equipment, lawn chairs, chair cushions, etc. as well as compressors, permanent pressure washers, Ac equipment. That way you don’t dirty up the garage every time you deal with the lawn. Or need outdoor bins or walk through the garage to store cushions to keep them dry in rainstorms, and retrieve later. Or hear the machines as much that support your new shop

This isn't a terrible idea, but I'm not sure it would work. I have something similar in my house, but it's more like a 10x10 room, whereas what they have is more like 4x8 with rapidly diminishing height. That could make it really tight to get in and out of with lawn equipment and things like patio chairs and cushions, especially when you consider the amount of room that would need to stay clear for the door to swing into the space.
@jonblair5470
@jonblair5470 Жыл бұрын
@@Not_Ferrari looks more like 3’8” by 15’ but never the less things like that need to be stored somewhere. I built something on the back of my garage to store similar stuff and have a bin on my deck for cushions only. Prior to me having either it was a pain to get everything in and out of the garage and to be honest the storage shed and bin look tacky imo. If I could build onto my house and make it look like it was always there without dealing with months and mountains or bureaucracy, I would. Jordan has the chance to do so. So that’s just my recommendation.

Issue with removal of wall is allowing access of exhaust and other fumes from the garage area into the upper apartment. Two doors were probably required to keep exhaust gasses to a minimum and removing the wall would increase the gasses access to the upper unit.

I have found an under stair storage room is often problematic. Skinny rooms - especially under stairs - end up being filled with stuff you can't get to. I can send you a photo. If it is wide enough to put shelves on one side and still access them then I would keep the wall and add a door. Having a secure place to keep tools would be a great plus - especially if you ever want to rent out the upper room and let the tenant park in the garage. If, however, it isn't wide enough (which I suspect it isn't) then I agree with Jordan - open it up.

You're going to be hauling furniture and appliances up those stairs. You should consider a double door in that opening, because you'll be making a right turn to get up the stairs. As for the area under the stairs, I agree with Jordan that an open space is preferable to a wall with another door. However, you might consider a roll-up door, too. You can get them in custom widths, so the opening could be as wide as you want. That way, Jordan can close the area off for security (or just to hide clutter), but have a wide opening when he wants it.

If you have a door under the stairs you can have storage shelves inside the hidden area. Maybe make a hidden doorway to that area that opens outward and looks like shelves or something. but if Jordan wans it wall-less it could be a larger open area for storage. Maybe stick some chairs or something under there to rest without having to go upstairs. Cabinets could be on the rear wall if they fit. I love the teamwork in this. Everyone worked well together to get that wall in place.

Make it a closet, door underneath the stairs. After a couple months if you find that you really don't like it you can always cut it out later but building it back is a pain and you already have the wood installed there now. You could reinforce stuff and make it more of a secure room so you can store more expensive things in there.

Put in a door and electrical and you can put in a large-capacity compressor for the garage. The wall will lessen the noise and it will be very useful. We have one set up in our garage and it is great when you need to run a tool or just need air in a tire or two. We put in several access ports around the garage and you can haul your hose to the connection and plug it in. Our compressor is always on and it rarely runs to top up and when it does we don't even hear it.

Under stair: Base your solution on the function. If you'll stuff the space full of seasonal decorations, just use a door. If you'll roll a couple of motorcycles to the side and under the stair, make a wide opening. I've done lots of both, and more. Usually, I stop the closet where the head height drops low enough to be a nuisance. Though one time, my client was an avid surfer, and he insisted on the closet space running all the way to the bitter end under the stringers: Old surf boards could be run to the shallow end!

Personally considering the size/location I would suggest some sort of kitchenette, having a large 'Dirty" sink and something like a overflow/beer fridge are some touches that are really nice when your working in there for hours. I'm not sure where your plans currently call for a washer and dryer but that would also fit in that space really well. I think I would personally turn it into a Kitchenette with an extra deep concrete counter/cabinets, a built in washer/drier/ a large sink, and a fridge with the section under the stairs too low to be useful turned into a storage nook and cabinets above (though set higher than you would normally put them so you can fit extra large objects in the sink) and any space above the cabinets left filled with built in shelves for extra long-term storage (Christmas stuff or things like that for example). Alternatively I love chest freezers because I buy meat on sale and store it until I need it to save money and having a large one in that area instead of a fridge would also be a good option, If I had the budget I would do everything I said above but instead of a full fridge I would put one built into the counter (like a wine fridge) and put a big chest freezer.

You should space your nails when nailing your king studs into the headers. Placing all your nails lined up will split and destroy the integrity of the material. This is a common practice in nailing any screws or nails joining framing members together. Your Jack studs as you call them are normally not nailed into the bottom plate. These are more commonly referred to as trimmers. Once you get to the installation of your doors and windows these are used to shim and make adjustments to get your openings plum. On windows you need one full length trimmer from the bottom of the header to the sill plate and another added from the bottom of the header to the top of your sub sill plate to enable you to shim the window opening plum. Add the extra trimmers on both sides when you figure your rough opening for your windows. Also take into consideration what size interior trim you will be using around interior doors so you have enough backing to nail your trim. Sometimes a single two by four header or a non bearing two by four wall without trimmers does not allow for enough backing to nail your trim. I noticed you have a single top plate, code requires a double top plate, and if in your area they don't require It I would still recommend having two. Before standing your walls take your claw hammer and raise the wall high enough to place a scrap piece of two by four underneath the top plate so you can get your hands under to raise the wall. I'm guessing in your case garage door wooden jams are not required, in many cases a exposed garage door jam is used for door installation. I would be real careful standing in front of a nail gun in operation. This should be a one man operation and I would recommend safety first and never stand or kneel in front of someone operating a high powered nail gun.

This is what I was thinking. That garage is huge, make use of the space. If its not too late, move that partition wall a few feet away from the exterior wall. This will allow for convenient wide stairs (good for moving furniture up and down). Then under the stairs you have storage for outdoor/backyard equipment, with access from the back of the garage. Effectively a shed inside the garage. The interior wall can just be plain. If you gave storage inside by the car that could lead to the car getting dinged.

I've been watching you all for months and am so excited to see the framing begin! My father-in-law has been helping me build my forever home for my family since 2019, so I can relate to the two of you on so many levels. You all show details about actual construction no one else does; never stop! I like the detail you showed about the anchor bolts, but getting the depth of those can be tricky; maybe consider describing that in detail in a future video. Screwing the nut on before you hammer it in is so important, otherwise you'll damage the threads and never get the nut on. You don't want to over tighten otherwise you'll break the seal of the pressure treated wood and make it more permeable to moisture in that spot. I've used a piece of painters tape to make a flap at at appropriate depth on my hammer drill to tell me how far to go. The tape flap also helps clear away the concrete dust as you drill. For the space under the stairs, I'd consider making it the size of a large bookshelf or garage cabinet. Put the bookshelf on hinges and have it swing in and right into the garage so it's not smacking into your car. If you don't want to go through that trouble, I like the door idea, but maybe make it a 3080 door or even larger. You're going to want that space under there.

Door under the stairs helps keep everything stored under the stairs clean.

I'm with Jordan on this one. If you leave the space under the stairs enclosed, you have a 3'8" wide closet where things will always be buried and not accessible. Out of sight and looking clean, but not easily used if needed. I vote either open, or a different idea where you can access the items stored there.

I would be sure to ask the architect about the door. I would think he’d want to keep exhaust gases from migrating upstairs. Fire migration would also be a concern while Jordan is using it as a living space. Love your channel.

Jordan’s idea for the stairs would work best for functionality. I am a workshop design engineer, and his idea is a great option for space utilization

Let me say I like this channel more with each episode. I have been a plan designer and licensed building contractor for about 40 years. Watching this channel shows that even though Dad has excellent trade skills you encounter problems through the building process, sometimes costly i.e. the foundation issues. The big take is that they always suck it up and continue on with the project. I would take a different approach to lift that wall. I do own a genie lift, skid-steer, and mini ex. What we would do is frame the wall with trimmers/jacks and then stand it without the beam. Then install the beam separately. I could do it myself with a couple of come-alongs. Just my thoughts whatever work for you is all good.

Absolutely agree. Stand it without the beam and then lift it into place. Done it before. Easy peasy.

You definitely want a door under the stairs. It's where you'll store all your tools, oils, nuts and bolts for the garage. It's nice to have that hidden away because it can tend to get messy over time. I'd also recommend building organizing shelves in that space under the stairs. Cheers guys .. good work!

I like Jordan's idea for the stair wall. Then, under the 2nd floor landing, make a mop closet, or something of the sort.

I vote for a door under the stairs for storage of seasonal items (e.g., Christmas decorations), etc.

I’m with Jordan. Make it part of the garage. Later it could always be closed in to some sort of workbench, or closet, or whatever. Nice job boys! I was wondering how you were going to get that wall up!!

Looks like a great spot to put tool boxes and various tool storage. I would definitely leave it open because closing it off will end up just limiting what you can store there and you'll wish you had the space later. Could be a good opportunity to do a really unique storage option too, not a lot of people with under the stair tool storage in the garage.

That space under the stairs would be a great place for tool storage and a workbench

Keep the wall. Put in a door to access the space under the stairs. You'll want separation between the garage and the stairs leading to the living space above. Keep the stair area as clean as possible. Maybe even put a mini mudroom storage below the area where Jordan will hang your picture (LOL), where he can drop his muddy boots/whatever, before heading upstairs. That's my 2 cents.

This is so exciting!! I hope we get a shot of Jordan's stang in there when it's done ❤ If you leave it partially open like Jordan wants might consider built in drawers for storage under the stairs rather than a wall of wasted space ☺

Honestly, I think it's a good thing you added an extra jack stud. You could see the top of that wall frame straining while you were lifting it with the machine and struggling to move it over. That might've saved your asses from the frame just breaking apart on you and needing to be rebuilt, because while it's definitely designed for compressive force, it sure seemed like it was struggling against that horizontal force!

hidden storage for all your "junk" is a godsend. Having somewhere to mount a bunch of narrow shelving for a garage would be awesome. Do a door, don't open the area up. it will keep your garage neat.

I like Jordan’s idea. Open that area up. You can always add/integrate cabinet/s and counter space later. All garages need more storage and flat space.
