I have a similar build. I put down a 40 x 46 concrete slab, 2, 40ft containers along outside edge running the 40ft length. That leaves me 30 inside between the containers. It has a 12 ft apron off the front end. The apron is 12' x 46'. Roll up door at each end. Front roll up door is 16' back roll up door is 12'. One walk in door, complete bathroom at one end of one of the containers. Car lift inside, many tool cabinets and assorted machines to do mechanic work on 4x4's and side by sides.

Good Day : I'm so sorry you had to clean off all that rust with that grinder . The all time fastest , easiest and most thorough method is "Wet Sand Blasting" . This is mixing very cold water with your sand . It will only take about 1/6 the time it would take to use that grinder . The cold water will stop any warpage .

From someone who knows only a little about building I wonder why you did not sand the rust off the roof and paint that too? Yup I am one of the planning dept./builder inspectors kind.
@metaspencer
@metaspencer Жыл бұрын
The containers are made of corten steel, which pretty much is made/designed to rust and weather ... so without any new water hitting the tops of the containers (with the roofs on now), I'm not worried about rust progressing up there.

Hey Spence, love all these videos. Have watched the whole “series” at lest 4 or 5 times! Wanting to replicate what you did. Couple of questions for you, how deep did you go on your footings? What height did you decided on the 2x4 uprights for the roof to sit on and why? Thanks!
@metaspencer
@metaspencer 4 ай бұрын
Howdy -- exciting to hear you're thinking/planning a build of your own. I wanna hear more! Where we are 4' footings tend to work and get down below frost. Check your frost line in your area. In one case I couldn't go that deep as I hit a shelf (slate here). The uprights are 4" to make it easy to slap 4x8 wall board (osb in my case) up there. I tend to go with numbers/lengths that fit for the materials I'll be using
@musiccitycruisers3863
@musiccitycruisers3863 4 ай бұрын
@@metaspencer thanks for the reply and info. 4ft makes a lot of sense. Did you also purposely make the lower roof the same pitch as the trusses? If not it looks really good. I’ll check on the frost line thing (didn’t think of that!). I’m just outside Nashville TN
@metaspencer
@metaspencer 4 ай бұрын
@@musiccitycruisers3863 I went for a flatter pitch on the side roofs to get a kind of "flared" look that I like, but still enough slope to shed snow

Hey there, we are working towards building a container home with a similar approach with two containers and a space of 14 feet between them. Can I ask how well the roof of the containers held up to having the built roof weight on them? I'm very interested in using your approach for the knee walls to support a roof with enough high for a second floor.
@metaspencer
@metaspencer Жыл бұрын
If I were building a house I'd probably brace the container tops/roofs with welded triangular brackets inside, just to avoid any potential sag or movement. My roof has been great but my tolerance for oddities is probably lower than yours, since it's a barn/workshop. Have you thought about putting your knee walls along the edge of the container? Much more solid there. And are you gonna attach your boxes to piers?
