Standup, sketch comedy, and comedic screenwriting are separate art forms from conversational humor, . Fran is a conversational humorist. That is, she responds in conversation with clever and pointed ways of saying things, many of which elicit laughter simply because they deliberately come out of left field. In a sense, the conversant's expectations are the set-up; the unwitting straight man. I regularly get told "Jeez, you should be a comedian". But it is one thing to play against expectations in a formal interaction - like a conversation/interview, and in my case, as a former university lecturer - and quite another to build up to a laugh from scratch. I can make you laugh by turning a phrase this way instead of that, but the humor comes from your expectations of civil conversation. I couldn't prepare a "tight five" to save my life, and I doubt Fran could either. That's not to diminish her charm and skill. Like I say, she is a conversational humorist, which is a different art form. Calvin Trillin is another one, and I imagine Oscar Wilde was as well.

they are writers and good writers have a very specific way with the spoken word. anyone can be a conversational humorist. not everyone can be a writer.
@markhammer6433 жыл бұрын
@@angelamoore1832 True. Maybe I picked the wrong comparators, since Fran does a lot more talking than writing. That's not a criticism of any sort. Many enjoy her conversation, and certainly one of the aspects that would be sorely missing in any writing of hers is her *manner* of speaking. I doubt another person's reading of a transcript of her speech would have all the comedic impact of HOW she says what she says.
@angelamoore18323 жыл бұрын
@@markhammer643 I think she writes her bits... I may be wrong though. What I'm getting at is the material is inventive and creative in itself, regardless of her style (which is pretty cool as well I must say.)
