François Joseph Fétis (25 March 1784 -- 26 March 1871) was a Belgian musicologist, composer, critic and teacher.

Oh oui bien supérieur.L'orchestration vigoureuse , l'éclat des aigus de la flûte tels des diamants, jamais d'ennui et toujours pris dans un tourbillon symphonique menée par la flûte solo .( Romberg a été un bon compositeur , sympathique , difficile mais conventionnel par rapport à Fétis qui a réalisé là un coup de maître )

Un concerto bellissimo, assai singolare nelle tonalità ardite e di difficile esecuzione, sintomo di una autentica ricerca di nuove tonalità per questo meraviglioso strumento. Fétis è stato sicuramente un innovatore che per primo ha saputo percorrere nuove strade. Bravissima la flautista Pas Van-Riet, un vero talento. Grazie per la condivisione.

This concerto is incredible from different points of view. The composer wrote it at the end of his life. He lived thru the transformation and modernization of the flute. The amount of modulations would have been impossible to play in a flute that existed when he was 20 years old.

Magnifique concerto , sans doute le plus beau jamais écrit pour la flûte . Fetis mérite bien plus que des appréciations ironiques et l'oubli , il a été un grand compositeur .son concerto pour la flûte est du même rang que ceux pour violon ou piano de Schuman , Saint-Saëns ou Mendelssohn . magistralement orchestré .1000 mercis pour cette mise en ligne . great ! Forgot to add the strangely modern, early Picassoesque type painting goes very well with the music. You have terrific taste in matching music with the visual arts, especially less heard music with lesser known, but still worthwhile, artists.

It's unusual I think to hear Sturm und Drang music composed for the flute, but M. Fetis carries it off beautifully. I think he was an unusual composer in many ways and deserves more of a listen.

Well, I fully understand what you mean..... Nonetheless I would not call this piece as be Sturm un Drang, in 1871, one century after SuD artistic movement ceased. It is a fully romantic piece, even outdated because in that year Decedentism was about to show up and this concerto has nothing of post romantic spleen but full romantic taste. Yet, delightful piece full of energy and power not without peaceful moments of reflection in its middle movement. The finale has got a Mendelssohn spirit and mood. Thinking about the age of the author when he wrote it.... It seems extremely vital and full of life and passion. Fétis certainly deserves to be listened more

Je ne pensais pas qu'on puisse composer un concerto aussi grandiose pour la flûte traversière.Fetis né avant 1790 a connu la flûte à une seule clef puis la flûte à 6 et 8 clefs avec patte d'ut et enfin la flûte mise au point par Karl Boehm.Son concerto est à la flûte traversière ce que le concerto de Dvorak est pour le violoncelle.B.eni soit Fétis pour son époustouflant concerto pour la grande flûte .

Yes ,i agree with you Kalo Arepo .this concerto for flûte is absolultly crazy ( fou ou incroyable in french ) . Fetis was 84 years ,84 i repeat but i hear a concerto written buy a young man and very brilliant artist . It sound als à concerto of Mendelssohn or Schuman or à foutain . It 's not important his was critic .Man can be a critic and be absolultly anable to leave " us "ce chef d'oeuvre "

À noter le talent de compositeur de Tafanel en avance sur son temps qui a inspiré Gabriel Fauré .J'écoute avec une joie toujours égale ce grand concerto pour flûte : beaucoup d'inspiration

Pleasant music (and remarkable for a man of 86) without really anything memorable about it. To this flute enthusiast's mind, a bit TOO ornamented and aimless in melody. But nice to have a piece from this remarkable man, who achieved so much in his mostly forgotten life. The bitter opponent of Berlioz (after initial friendliness) his critical opinions really do not hold up for us today. But, he was dedicated to music, and even his virulent attacks on Berlioz gave way in the end to an 'alarmed admiration'; a reflection of respect that even Berlioz himself underneath it all felt toward Fetis as well...
