I went to this match last min. What a great day it was. We booked the Eurostar the late night before (Friday), and were surprised there were tickets left. Turned out we had entered the date for April not March by mistake. So when we turned up at Waterloo, the ticket was no good. Confused we went to the desk, and the lovely lady felt sorry for us and exchanged tickets for a space in 1st class. Result!. Got to the stadium, and got a ticket from a street seller. Convinced it was fake, we went to the gate, got in and got our places just behind the posts where Howley scores the try. Thought were were getting beat big time, then Wales turned it around. Several very expensive beers in Paris afterwards. One of the best spontaneous days of my life.

The thing that I remember about this game is an interview the rugby pundits wanted with Neil Jenkins after the Welsh victory. I cannot find the interview anywhere but after winning 22 points for Wales & at the zenith of his career Neil was sorry he could not spare the time to chat as his Nan was not well & he had to get home to see her! No ego. No grandstanding. A true Welsh rugby hero.

@@donnieon5 It’s thought that the tune was chosen as the Breton national anthem to celebrate the friendship between the Welsh and Bretons at a Congress of the Union Régionaliste Bretonne held in Lesneven in 1903. And it’s not just the anthem - there are also a number of other similarities between the two cultures. Welsh and Breton are Brythonic languages and so are also linguistically similar

Was much better than the overrated and overcomplicated Johnny W. who got all the plaudits. Jenkins played behind several beaten packs and still managed to pull wales out of the bag. Was way above Wilkinson. Dare I say it, he wasn't English so there. (Thank God and neils mam!).

One can see how the game was starting to change with less contested rucks in this match. Forwards are fanning out on defense instead of fighting for the ball against the team that got tackled and brought to ground, setting up a ruck. A few years earlier and the forwards would have been charging in from both teams to fight for possession on just about every break down. Not anymore. The game now looks more like rugby league, and that's not good. There's just not that space created unless there are mistakes made that can be taken advantage of.
@cymruisrael5 жыл бұрын
Totally agree with you that the game looks like rugby league these days. The forwards should get out of the way and let the backs run.

Yup Jenkins holds the record for an unbelievable 44 consecutive kick successes for the (short lived) Celtic Warriors team in 2003. This game saw him be the first player to get 1000 at test level. Very probably the best of all time although pretty much all other kickers had moved on to plastic tees by then he stuck with the sand and why not with that result?

Another interesting fact is he only ever used sand from Tenby.
