France is reported to be in talks with Niger's army about the possible withdrawal of some of its troops.
Niger's coup leaders have been urging France to withdraw 1,500 troops stationed there and have ordered the French ambassador to leave.
Thousands of protesters have been rallying outside the French military base in the capital Niamey.
Niger was plunged into turmoil in July when President Mohamed Bazoum was ousted in a coup.
Nicolas Normand is the former French Ambassador to Mali and Senegal. He joins us live from Paris to discuss the latest updates.

Let Niger's people vote if they want France to stay or leave. Or better yet, let the people vote if they want this junta at all? Oh wait, that's exactly what the junta never wants to do. Maybe the junta supporters should just shut up about what "the people" of Niger want, given that they support NOT letting people have that choice anymore 🤔

In March 2008, former French President Jacques Chirac said: “Without Africa, France will slide down into the rank of a third [world] power” Chirac’s predecessor François Mitterand already prophesied in 1957 that: “Without Africa, France will have no history in the 21st century” Former French President Jacques Chirac recently spoke about the African nations money in France banks and about the French exploitation scheme: “We have to be honest, and acknowledge that a big part of the money in our banks come precisely from the exploitation of the African continent.” The economic and monetary hostage hold France has over its former colonies benefits mostly France, these nations' citizens live in generally poorer conditions than the rest of Africa. Without it's stranglehold on its former colonies France would drop about ten places lower on the list of richest European countries. France has carried out several DOZEN coups to replace leaders who bring up the withdrawal of reserves or a fairer economic relationship.

@@yowcephhelm5910 I just sighed. It's really sad not to realize how right @legion is, and that the dead brain here is not him but you. These French-speaking sub-saharan Africans have been independent for more than 60 years. Yet, they still use a colonial currency printed by the same colonial master turned into a neo-colonial master. What is more, none of these African countries is ever present when this currency is printed. They don't even know how much is printed since it's the currency of 14 African vassal states of France. France can and does print as much francs CFA as it needs not as those vassal states need. Then they deposit - today - 50% of their reserves with the same French Central bank that prints, controls and manages their currency. It was 85% before 2018. Can you imagine that? Just how foolish can a people be and we are being asked to keep quiet so as not to hurt their feelings. The worst of this deal between France and its present black African colonies is this; if any of them wants to withdraw from its own reserves with the French Central bank, it must be in the form of loans to be repaid to France with interests. Let me explain further; rather than give them their money in the reserves with the French Central bank, the French Central bank will give it to them as loans from the French Central bank. Then these African countries will repay with interests for borrowing their own money. This is unique and unheard of in the history of mankind. As a French, I feel terrible recounting and writing these daylight crimes we commit against the poorest nations on earth. But who let's himself be robbed so foolishly and for decades on without protesting? This is beyond me.

The PRC has a very strong and stubborn one-China policy that it imposes on her diplomatic allies and uses its industrial and economic base to beguile other countries to follow this strict interpretation of the one-China policy.

The continuous resource appropriation by France from its African colonies is deeply concerning and highlights the persisting patterns of exploitation and inequality. It's time for a fair and equitable partnership with China and Russia that respects the sovereignty and development of African nations.Operation Barkhane, once hailed as a beacon of hope for stabilizing the Sahel region, has unfortunately fallen short of its objectives. The continuous cycle of violence, resource looting, terrorism, and instability persists, leaving innocent lives shattered. The people of Sahel deserve lasting peace and security. Anything other than getting out of someone else's home is a foreign occupation by definition. People have a right to physically expell an invader by force if able and willing. The security deterioration in Mali and Burkina Faso is as a result of the neighboring countries like Chad, Niger and others which still harbor French forces which provides arms, training and cover for the insurgents.
