Regarding La Zarra- the gesture is not different in Canada, no. But it is in Morocco. She is Canadian-Moroccan.

Personally I think the La Zarra bit is overly critical. A lot of her humor goes over people's heads and the French media was basically attacking her the whole time leading up to rhe competition. She definitely still has some diva attitude but things have been overblown. Anyways I can understand the french delegations thinking processes regardless.

I think the Anouk theory is spot on, and I don't think France is aiming for a win. But, I also think that they might end up very very high with the juries and you never know, with the right staging and running order, the televote might just swing enough votes his way to end up on top anyway. So happy to see the return of Overthinking Eurovision and quietly hoping for a video on Belgium's entry and the weird experience of seeing multiple people hype it as a potential winner.

You got it wrong about the symbol La Zarra showed, she never said it was to do with Canada, it's actually used in Morroco (she's part Morrocan), that the gesture she showed means exactly what she said. And it isn't a middle finger. It was clearly her turning her hand while showing with two fingers a sort of gathering motion. I don't mean to be rude but this was easy to research and precisely the type of sensionalist journalism that made a big deal of the gesture in the first place. It was still an arrogant gesture, especially with her facial expression she clearly seemed to be saying she's dissapointed, but it was not showing a middle finger to the audience.

This is fair. I think even so it was a dumb thing for her to do but her explanation wasn't as silly as it sounds at first.

Moroccan here! This is straight up false, we have no hand symbol of the sort!!! Please don't spread misinformation, a middle finger has the same connotation in our country as it does in Canada. In addition to that, La Zarra has always been reluctant to display any aspect of her moroccanity, it's almost like she's ashamed of her origins. Moroccans were personally shocked at how whitewashed she was!!!

In general one of our philosophies is not to worry about "good" or "bad" and just worry about "interesting." No roasts from us (although I guess we did sorta roast Wild Youth last year). There are songs we love this year that we aren't doing videos about, and other songs we'll do 15 minutes on that we don't like that much. But if you must know, Slimane can really sing and he's foxy as hell, and I say that as a straight man. -MB

In terms of potential to win, I think Slimane could earn a lot of votes from people who want a classic ballad, because (at the moment) there are very few of these, and of course he's a seasoned performer, so it will shine in the final. Regardless of where he places, I'm certain this will be good for Slimane and he'll gain huge numbers of new fans as a result of being in the contest.

France 2 has just published the audience scores for Eurovision 2024. This year, Eurovision had an audience share of 36.8%, an increase of around +10% with 5.3 million spectators, with even a peak of 7.6 million during Slimane's performance. These are historic figures according to the channel. New, it will be interesting to see if these figures will be maintained or deflated the following year. Another good analysis, great job

Hi, just discovered your channel and love your analysis! As a Frenchie, I do think it is spot on! Slimane has the almost impossible job of making Eurovision popular in France and I fear French people won’t accept anything below top 10 from him… La Zarra’s gesture was a “toz”, it is not canadian but comes from the arabic vocabulary which can mean disappointment and “I don’t care” among other things 😊 (not an expert though)

This has made me realise that France and the UK are actually having quite similar experiences at Eurovision at the moment. Both have had one recent major success, and have both found themselves very hands-on with the contest (UK with hosting last year, and France with their two JESC hostings recently), but they’re both struggling to replicate the results they’ve both had. And so they’ve both made a similar move this year, by selecting established artists to try and get the public to care

Since we are talking about viewing numbers, it is important to note about France that Eurovision is broadcasted on France 2, the biggest public-owned channel on French tv but not the biggest channel overall. The main competitor is TF1, which is a privately owned tv broadcaster that is not only the first channel in France, but also in Europe overall in terms of viewers (you can fact-check this on the mighty wikipedia if you don't believe me). So basically, while Eurovision is admittedly not as popular in France, as you explained in the video by comparing to a random cop show, it is also starting at a disadvantage compared to the UK, for example, which airs Eurovision on BBC1, the most viewed channel in Britain anyways.
@schnitzelsemmel
@schnitzelsemmel 9 ай бұрын
I'd be happy if you were able to point me towards the Wikipedia article you cite as calling TF1 the biggest TV channel in Europe, because I couldn't find anything like that. It generally seems tough to compare channels in different countries, because based on what metric? The most popular metric the French channels use for promotions are the "total reach", which are dubious, and the "total hours watched" which is not measured in all countries equally). You can go for individual shows and time slots. The TF1 20hrs seems to be the most watched news programme in Europe, before the Tagesschau and BBC's News at 10, but in prime time, TF1 looses to both German channels ARD and ZDF. TF1 barly gets over 3.3million spectators, and on some days they fall behind France2, while both ARD and ZDF have more than 3,7million usually. A crass example is last Monday, where TF1 had 2.9million www.ozap.com/actu/audiences-quel-score-pour-le-lancement-de-la-peste-avec-frederic-pierrot-sur-france-2-face-au-retour-de-lycee-toulouse-lautrec-sur-tf1/642747 ZDF's 20:15 programme on that day had 6,9 million. www.ozap.com/actu/audiences-quel-score-pour-le-lancement-de-la-peste-avec-frederic-pierrot-sur-france-2-face-au-retour-de-lycee-toulouse-lautrec-sur-tf1/642747 There's obviously a lot of fluctuation, but if you look at almost every time slot on multiple days, the main news at 20h are the only slot where TF1 wins over both German channels.
@bastbats1952
@bastbats1952 9 ай бұрын
@@schnitzelsemmel You are right, it's not always clear how they calculate this. But I've heard this about TF1 for many years and it does state it on the second paragraph of the wikipedia page : "TF1 est la première chaîne de France et même d'Europe en termes d'audience". In any case, my point was more to say that depending on the broadcaster, viewing figures will change. It is true the UK loves Eurovision more than France, for example, but the huge viewing figures over there are helped by having the biggest broadcaster air the show, as oppose to France where it is not the biggest channel that broadcasts the contest.

@k.v.7681 9 ай бұрын
There's also a matter of audience targeting to consider. Cop shows do incredibly well in France, older ladies love them, and TV is very much a retiree thing in France, it's the main audience. Under 50 years old, there is a monumental part of potential audience that just goes for streaming after they're done watching the news. A good way to guess what the audience of a program is is to watch the ads. Most cop shows will show ads for intimate soaps, lady products and cars.

As always a great video which gives another perspective on the french entry in Eurovision... and lots of other things. The strategy behind the early announcement of Slimane as french representative in eurovision 2024 was also to associate Eurovision with probably the currently most succesful french artist and make forget La Zarra... before hosting Junior Eurovision in Nice. As for Slimane it's a great opportunity to gain more fame in Europe and beyond and tour in non french speaking countries as Barbara Pravi could do after her brilliant result back in 2021.

I loved France this year in Eurovision, especially since it succeeded where Greece (right before France in the semi) failed, being more intimate with the screen than a performance seemingly designed for a cellphone, while so grand as to show the whole auditorium and belt into the microphone from two cubic mitres away. They deserved their flowers for that performance, especially since France doesn't leave too much of an impact normally, from what I recall (barring voila, I haven't heard that before but it sounds like the end of the world and I love it for that).

Picking an entry that will be popular in France but won't win the contest will have the effect of interesting the french audience only marginally. They will watch this year for Slimane, won't be interested in the other entries, won't get interested in the ESC more than they previously were, will be gutted when Slimane doesn't win, will keep a generally bad opinion of the ESC or form an even worse one, and next year France TV will have to face the same problem again. Short-term thinking. Except for the fact that Sweden is hosting this year, therefore the show's gonna be a massive banger overall, so I don't know, maybe it will hook some new fans up for years to come.

Please can you do a deep dive into Joost Klein - his song is fascinating to me this year - it's "fun" but not (if that makes sense). I would find a deep dive so interesting.

Well, at least they have some idea behind it. Germany keeps loosing because the NDR thinks it knows how to pick music even though they keep failing;)

@wuw127 By “almost sent” you mean “didn’t even let them participate in the selection,” right? One of the great Eurovision bag fumbles of all time.

I wonder what's the reason behind French success in Junior Eurovision - it's hardly because of the ratings, yet they are like in absolute dominance there...? I'd personally love for them to win, since I still can't get over the fact how Amina lost to Carola. And considering I am fan of the contest for 40 years now, I'd love to see every country winning during my lifetime.

Seems like there's an ARG going on, the newest video spells the premise out (the nightcore remix one). Not sure how far anyone has gotten with it yet but it's definitely interesting.

Mon amour isn't strong enough to win as presented today. Either they released it early to do a winning revamp soon or... you are right, they don't really want to win. 😂

Your viewing figures graph indicates that when a country does well, its viewership increases. So surely sending something that Europe would like would actually be the path to increased interest in eurovision? The 'Anouk effect' was 100% dependant on her doing well after all.
