The best part about the entire affair. France initially wanted to sell the australians nuclear subs but the australians wanted diesel subs specifically. So france reengineered their sibs down to diesel subs which are still capable of a later nuclear upgrade. Now, a decade later, australia is like: actually we want nuclear subs

well, you need to go into more details. What you say is true but biased. The project's cost went from 40 to 65 billion due to France's lateness. Also, US is transferring the tech to the Aussie. With france, they only get the submarines.
@DeathTemplar1
@DeathTemplar1 3 жыл бұрын
@@duyle-ej6ty Lateness caused by Australian demand on the project (that these diesel submarines could be retrofited back to nuclear one) and France not having knowledge on diesel submarines. Which was known before hand by aussie. Also aussie send a mail to the company and France the same day to confirm that the project could advance further and that was before they announced that they changed. Honnestly both Aussie and US way to handle this could have been far better. Especially when it involve messing with an allies. However i'm not saying France lateness on the contract wasn't a loss on their image.
@athrunzala6770
@athrunzala6770 3 жыл бұрын
@@duyle-ej6ty it is not really that .. the contract with france should be diesel because australian law prohibits nuclear proliferation ... and there was in addition to submarines a real partnership in the pacific .... the offer American allows Australia to override the law on the proliferation of weapons because the propulsion will be managed by the USA ... but the real problem in this case, in addition to destroying a contract on the sly ... is that 'an alliance created by leaving france isolated in the pacific ...
@duyle-ej6ty
@duyle-ej6ty 3 жыл бұрын
@@athrunzala6770 Thanks for reinstating what all the comments (including mine) said. What I pointed out was the gain the Aussie gets even if the Aussies orders the nuclear subs from france. And what's up "leaving france isolated in the pacific." They haven't been active in the pacific for decades. And in the current situation, it's EU's move, not France's move. France has given up with military and diplomatic power to the EU, at least in the pacific ocean. Of course, France still holds more power in African region.

I usually think that the daily show has informed and interesting positions on issues. That's why I'm particularily surprised that this particular issue isn't taken more seriously (or at all seriously). Ever since Obama has left office, the European-American relationship has suffered. At least in my country the entire movement of "America First" has become a reason to become less reliant on the US. Trump's positions on pretty much everything that concerned other countries was less than ideal, look at what he did with the WHO, NATO, UN and other organisations that were supposed to strengthen international coopertion. When his presidency came to an end, there was the consensus, that american politics change too quickly, and even if Biden were to be elected president ,we couldn't trust that he would take the global needs seriously, that he would honour treaties and agreements. The fact that the US has now involved themselves in an agreement they had no businnes involving themseves in, and actually forced France out of a multi-billion-dollar deal, is despicable. For me personally it shows that the US has no interest in strengthening its relationship with the EU. And it makes it very clear, that any deal involving the US is not really to be trusted. It shows that the faith the international community put on Biden's promises was wasted. Sure, it sounds funny, that France cancelled a Gala, but it is so much more than just a Gala. Obviously, this is only my opinion. I am by no means a professional. It's just what I think.

Why should America worry about Europe? Europeans need to actualize their views on Europe position in the world. It's time to realize we are irrelevant in the global scene. As a former Sonarman, I know more about this issue than I care to. There are a lot of really bad generalizations and misconceptions here. What isn't being reported is that France has extremely well built submarines. Their subs are some of the highest tech subs in the world. France and Germany are also basically the world peddlers for diesel submarine technology. Has been that way since WW2. They are the ones who sold most of the subs that China, North Korea, and other nations have in their arsenal. Diesel subs are also extremely well suited for border protection missions, and protecting areas of the ocean that are closer to shore. They actually are harder to detect than their nuclear counterparts and manuver better. As to why the deal went south, it's pretty easy to see. With the wars ending in Afghanistan and Iraq, the American military industrial complex needs to sink it's teeth into something. They probably offered the nuclear upgrade to the subs at a reasonable rate and undermined the deal. The US and Brittan also make better strategic partners because they have better means of helping. I don't know the fine print, but that's a rough guess.

Which is why France should be mad at Australia for breaking the contract. The US didn't break the contract, so why is France in such a snit with the US? For whatever reason, the Australians felt they were getting a better deal (quality, quantity or price) elsewhere to risk breaking their contract with France. They weren't forced into it. France needs to work it out with the Australians.

Australia didn't recall a promise to France, they annouced breacking an official governmental military contract while australian ingeeniers were still working in France the same morning and telling they're really happy of the subs building progress. Imagine Switzeland telling US to f**k off with their F-35 already half built on the US soil because now they choose french Raphales, not because they're better but because that's polically better for them. As a french person, I wish our defense minister could do something more useful than being a sales rep for war machines (and the private companies that make them). Sure it's lots of money, and I'm really sorry for the naval construction workers who I guess counted on these submarines. But I'm also frankly tired of being told to celebrate whenever a big weapon contract is signed. I'm sure we could have a more useful industry than one that exports killing devices to doubtful partners (Australia not necessarily being one of them). Plus, the public reaction to Australia changing course is making things worse. It's not like we don't have a number of scandals around arm deals already right ? Let's just throw a ridiculous petulant fit over an agreement that wasn't binding enough on top of it.
@edavid2557
@edavid2557 3 жыл бұрын
As Trevor spotted it: let's talk about really important things like climate change... And France is only obsessed about the money they're not getting from killing machines... I'm wondering weather the climate would get better all of a sudden if all countries stop producing weapons... ??
@Tinopl3
@Tinopl3 3 жыл бұрын
The issue is that first, it's not like the deal was "just" canceled. The deal with France was canceled breaking a contract that has been going on for 5 years without a warning, breaking the trust between allies. Moreover, if you want to celebrate the fact of not constructing big weapons, it's the opposite that happens. France was going to sell electric submarines to Australia, which was fine with New Zealand. Now, the US is handing nuclear power to Australia without consulting any other allies, and it's really stressing out New Zealand who doesn't want any nuclear powered weapon on its waters. Just imagine if France decided on its own to hand out nuclear power to one of our allies : the US would do anything in their power to stop the deal.
@ameliecarre4783
@ameliecarre4783 3 жыл бұрын
@@Tinopl3 Don't need to imagine, if you wanna know why New Zealand is stressed with nuclear stuff in its vicinity, you just have to look at France's history of testing its nukes in the Pacific and bombing eco-activists right on kiwi territory. We're also practically gifting planes to Egypt and constantly closing deals with Saudi Arabia knowing full well they're using the stuff we make on Yemeni civilians. And we were gonna sell Australia diesel submarines, let's not pretend it would have been cleaner. I'm just saying MAYBE our cooperations could be on something else than "defense".
