I work in foodservice in the US, I know this is not true for every establishment, but we have very strict protocol on food and food prep safety. Floors, walls, ceilings, and food prep surfaces all have a separate brush, rag, sanitizer bottle, and mop buckets for each step of disinfection. The dishwasher temps, ph, and free chlorine PPM are checked every 15 minutes, and every internal temperature is checked in each and every meatball of hamburger patty. If you don’t fallow protocol in our facility, you are fired on the spot. It’s almost like Gordon Ramsay is my boss, but he isn’t.

It's simply a system that the school board (and government) had let to go out of control. I'm sure back in the day American schools had decent prepared lunches for children before the advent of fast food and frozen foods. It's only in the past few decades that things started to slide downhill, schools started taking shortcuts and the quality of food started deteriorating. French food is only a brand and have nothing to do with quality. It's a way better than american beacuse american food is the worst junk on Earth. I am polish and I can''t find good quality bread, fresh vegetables, different kind of sausages and meet in the western Europe. In polish market you can find differnt kind of sausages. In France you must go to the butcher, but even there you won't find so many kinds like in polish shop. In the wstern Europe there is a porblem with fresh vegetables, good quality butter, real mayonaise, real mustard, real milk, good apples, natural eggs aqnd other things. In Poland there are points everywhere where you can do general.comprehensive shopping with good quality food. In western Europe this is a problem. French cousine is famous, but there are very good polish cousine, and other cousines. So that's very unfair to underrate some countries beacuse they have a brand and are famous in the world, considerating a fact that esatern food is still a way more natural than western. It's changing beacuse of European's Union directives. French are agnry beacuse of US domination. The same way East Europeans are angry beacuse of German or French domination in Europe(concern's,licences, technology and laws).

So true, I'm french and I remember it was exactly like this. But mainly, the lunch part was a time to share, to be with your friends, to talk. And at home it was the same, dinner was family time, no TV, everybody ate at the same time, we would share what we had done for the day etc.. I have relatives from the US and when I went there I was so shoked by the way everybody ate.. None of them ate at the same time, there was no "family time" everybody ate "when they were hungry" (as they claimed). And all "fast food" like pizza, burgers, fries.. And in front of the TV.. I guess it's cultural differences but it's so shoking for me.

When i was a kid in the 70's here in the US, we did have family time, where the TV was turned off and the family ate dinner together, unfortunatly by the 80's both parents would have to work to make a living, and home video game systems came out, and families started drifting apart, now the family will sit at the dinner table, and message each other on their cell phones and tablets

I wish my family took food more seriously. I am American and while we don't typically buy fast food, but my brothers usually eat processed things (Frozen pizza, processed snacks, sugary soda). We all just eat, as you said, "while we are hungry". I absolutely hate the way that we handle and think of food as in America. I simply cannot go a day without having to eat something processed because I have nothing else to eat. When I go shopping I look for local meats, but all I find is meat from thousands of miles away in shiny packaging from corn-fed cattle. Its sad. I wish I could be fortunate enough to live in France.

I don't know why, but the last couple of days I've been watching videos about school lunches from over the world, and one thing I noticed in common is that other countries see their food as another way to introduce children to their culture. I think if the school lunch program was structured quite differently in American public schools, it could become a way to introduce kids to the many different cultures that coexist here. So many of my friends and I have strong memories of bringing food from our culture to school for lunch and getting relentlessly teased by other students, but if they were exposed to those foods from an early age, it could foster acceptance and understanding. Not to mention it would make for better tasting and more varied food.

My grandsons (5 and 13) are both in a French School. School starts on 6 September, 2021so I checked on their different school website, the menu is published until 22 October (then Autumn vacation starts). Primary school every day: 1 starter, one main course with either fresh poultry, meat or fish, 1 vegetarian dish, one cheese different every day, and for dessert yoghurt, seasonal fruit, or fruit salad. Once in a while, the children get French fries, cakes. Secondary school every day: choice between 3 starters, 3 main courses - 2 with poultry, meat or fish, and 1 vegetarian- then a choice of 2 trimmings, French fries only once in while, a cheese, and for dessert 2 choices.

Where you got your cutlery there was also a massive pile of sliced baguette, and a another tub of pasta or rice. You could just take as much extra as you wanted. In winter they added a huge urn of (slightly watery) soup. I wouldn't say the food was gourmet but you never went hungry.

And they all look very healthy. The food looks much healthier than a small American meal and much more filling. I would eat that. I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t eat that.

4:28 this isn't escargot, this is bigorneau, periwinkle or winkle, I'm not certain how you call them in english, seafood.

Exactly : it's whelk (bulot)!

I wish the school in USA and Australia should do like that.

I live in the Netherlands where there isn't much of a food culture like in France. We were supposed to eat the maggoty whole wheat bread that we took to school in our lunchbox every day. The only foods that you could buy in schools were snickers/cola's from vending machines. And some schools had culinary stuff like fried junkfood. So that's what people would eat if they didn't bring their bread or threw it in the trash because it didn't taste good. These French lunches make us look like a bunch of dark age barbarians.

Wow, I didn’t know these Americans had bad lunches... at my school it’s amazing. Once every month we cook our own food. One time we hand made corn bread, fried chicken, and apple sauce. Fresh from the oven. Sometimes we’d have gourmet meals on holidays like steak, cheesy potatoes, and broccoli with a vinaigrette. Another time we got fries shaped into smiley faces, fresh breaded chicken, and an ice cream Sunday. That tasted good!
