France's Swiss Regiments - Part 1

Hey guys and welcome to an in depth look at Napoleon's Swiss units! well, I say Napoleon's, it's mostly Louis the XVI's!
There'll be 2 more parts to this (maybe 3), one covering Spain and Russia and one covering the Valais and Neuchatel regiments, so sub for them!
Also, tomorrow at 10:30AM BST I'll be going live for a bank holiday Monday paintalong, and perhaps kitbashing some Portuguese dragoons, maybe some Middle Guard, I don't know, I've not decided yet!

I learned more about Swiss troops watching your video than I have in the last 2 years reading everything I could find on Napoleon and his wars. Thank you for a great video! Do give warning of cannon shot as I was doing a paint along while listening only to have my brush go wildly astray when the cannon went off. My grenadier was not pleased at all about the blue streak across his face!

Very nice! I have gotten an interest in the Swiss units of the Napoleonic Wars so this is a helpful video for me. The uniforms of Swiss regiments are really cool I have to say.

The Cuckoo clock actually came from the Black Forest area in Germany. That was an Irish regiment in your image of Red coat soldiers early on in your video, probably the Dillon Regiment. My mother's ancestors were officers in that regiment. They also were in Napoleon's army and are on the Legion of Honour roll.

@Michael White, yes you are correct that is the Irish regt Dillon, the only Irish regiment with black facings at this time. They had black facings as early as the Nine years war sometimes called the Grand Alliance, and of course during the Spanish war of succession, the picture in question is the assault of Dillons regt against the British line at The Battle of Fontenoy when they led the French attack. This successfully broke the British line and the French went on to win the battle and by the way you are also right about the cuckoo clock. Mr Welles was way of the mark regarding the Swiss militarily or otherwise. Regards

That was such an Excellent insightful deep dive, especially the segment on the Lucerne Lion monument that colourfully quoted sir Mark Twain on his travels, which I’d never heard before. You clearly put alot of effort into scripting the video out because 26 minutes whizzed by in half the time, leaving me wanting more, selfishly so. I’m rather quite the enthusiast of the time period and Suisse evolvement during the war effort in particular. A part 2 would be more than any of us deserve but I must ask. I’d love to watch a Sequel, made at your convenience of course. ❤ from the Napoleonic history lovers, great video.

Thanks for the video, good work. One thing, at the battle of Pavia 1525 no side had more than 20‘000 troops, the French had 8‘000 Swiss Mercenaries. (Source Wikipedia) At 2:15 you say there were 120‘000 Swiss troops.

Orson Welles , it seems he knew not much of the Swiss History. The e Cuckoo Clock was and is made in the german Region called Schwarzwald/ Black Forest The Halbard is a swiss invention, the swiss Army pocket knife is known since 150 years and is considered the best multifunctional knife ever., Chocolade as we know it is also a swiss invention, swiss cheese is the best cheese in the world. I could name you more but i don't wannavwrite a book for an Idiot.
