As the 77th Cannes Film Festival gets underway, where Japanese anime studio - Studio Ghibli - is being awarded the honorary Palm d'Or, we take a look at Japanese pop culture that has become all the rage in France. Founded by Hayao Miyazaki in 1985, Studio Ghibli has produced films like 'the Boy and the Heron', 'Spirited Away' and 'Princess Mononoke'. But why has Japanese anime become so popular in France? Seeking to gain and maintain its influence, Japan has since WWII adopted a soft-power strategy which focuses on the export of its pop culture including manga, video games, cosplay and anime. Both anime and manga were created by Japanese people for Japanese consumers. A Western businessman bought it at a low price. Like Gold Ruck, Transformers, and Power Rangers. The people who made the most money were Western businessmen, not Japanese. Additionally, in Asia, most anime and manga were distributed as pirated copies. The toys they manufacture also do not have Japanese permission. Japan didn't export culture, they stole it! ! America still paid us a license fee, but they modified it in a way that made it difficult to tell that it was made in Japan. The exact fact is that the Japanese government started considering anime and manga as export products only about a decade ago! Little do Westerners know how much Asia has stolen Japanese pop culture. For example, they stole Japanese manga and changed the names of the characters and authors to Korean or Chinese. There are countless such examples. They also stole hundreds of Japanese pop songs, erasing all traces of Japan and having their own singers sing them. They are now shocked to learn that the culture they loved as children is actually Japanese. What I expect from Westerners is to position Japan and Asia separately. Japanese pop culture is Japanese and has nothing to do with "Asia."

Why are you blaming Koreans? Koreans do not think that Japan exports culture for the sake of its national brand or national image. As you said Japanese culture was created for Japanese people and has become famous around the world. On the contrary many Japanese claim that the Korean government exports Korean kpop and dramas for the sake of Korea's image. no. I think the reason Japanese pop culture has become so popular recently is purely because diverse ideas have become more accepted by many people. Think back to your childhood. There are many things that were close to you without you even knowing they were Japanese pop ducts, such as Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, Transformer toys, and Licca-chan dolls. etc… However, as you grow up, it becomes embarrassing to say publicly, "I like anime," and it becomes more private. However, recently, the world has become one where both adults and children can enjoy themselves at expos like this. There was just a rare piece of Japanese culture there. In the future, there will be more expos where you can experience various cultures from various countries, and a place where anyone can enjoy themselves will be created. I'm looking forward to it.

I think it's well known that the French love the Japanese and the Japanese love the French. They both have similar very high standards for art, fashion, food and design and they are both romanticized in each other's country. Italians too, as they are very similar with the French in that they are pretty much the best artists and designers in the world. Japan's whole culture is based on design and art so it makes sense that these 2 European countries admire Japan.

I grew up with Saint Seiya and Dragon ball, later and still a huge fan of One Piece, Shingeki no Kyojin etc But Japan is a cultural treasure in other way. The music is amazing, seriously, NONE of our composer have the talent of Nobuo Uematsu or Shiro Amaguchi or the Nintendo team like Fuji and Asahi and others. For English speakers: Goldorak = Grendizer Albator, le corsair de l'espace = Space Pirate Captain Harlock Astro, le petit robot = Astro Boy Yamato = Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato .. and so many more, in France, they were devouring tons of anime. French people were way ahead of others when it comes to loving anime/manga/etc. And let's not forget Les Mystèrieuses Cités D'Or / The Mysterious Cities of Gold, a France-Japan co-production. I'm not even French and I knew French people were weebs way before those terms were invented.

@@user-kv6cy7ve5k Actually, XG is not categorized under K-pop or J-pop, but only XPOP from Japan. XGALX is managed and labeled by its parent company, AVEX, a Japanese corporation. Even Simon, their producer, stated in their documentary that they are not a K-pop group. I recommend watching the XG documentary for more information. All XG members were born in Japan. Unlike K-pop artists, XG performs J-pop songs in their concerts.

In Japan, anime was made for Japanese people and then naturally spread to the world, and was not originally made for people other than Japanese. However, Korea implemented K-pop and other things as a national policy to improve the country's image. Well, Mazinger Z is an anime I watched when I was about 8 years old. However, I recently found out that the final episode of this anime recorded high viewership in France. In my time, there were a lot of anime I couldn't follow, and Mazinger Z was one of them. That work was too complicated for me as a child. Gundam and Evangelion, which came afterwards, were also beyond my understanding. But France loves a part of Japanese culture. I think that in order to answer this, Japanese people also need to understand a part of French culture. Your love of a part of Japanese subculture is an inquisitiveness like mathematics or physics. The actual true first animes, mangas and gamers fans were the gen xers. We loved those, when was still a very niche hobby and thing, not as popular or mainstream as today. The Whole World has been "Quietly Dominated" by Japanese and Korean Entertainment for a long time already as a response to American Hollywood. People around the globe wanted something different, something new. And their wants were sated by Eastern Entertainment from Korean Dramas and Japanese Mangas and Anime. You would NEVER see something like Berserk (Especially the Rape Scene) in an American Show due to how Restrictive they are on such things. But you would in Japanese Entertainment. We want darker themes and stories, something more real and personal and hits hard. You won't get that from American Entertainment due to how "Politically and Socially Correct" they have to be. Western News Media and Mainstream Figures act and talk about this like they found out about just yesterday. This has been happening for a long time and you ignored it. Thats all. But i do have to respect this News Channel for not turning off the comments about this topic compared to PBS for example.

We don't really mind that kind of things in France. We always had dark animated shows or films alongside japanese ones. Mind you in France, things like South Park, Deadpool or Fifty shade are rated 12 years and + (while in america they are rated R). In our animation we don't think animation equal kid. In fact Many shows even made for kids would shock many americans and they sound really tone down in their english dubbing. When I was a kid South Park was rated even lower as 10+. Most shonen anime with ecchi or fight scenes are rated 10+. If I also remember correctly, Attack on titan was rated 16+ on tv (it was France 4, a national free tv channel). Other example, Kid Paddle is very well knwon bande dessiné (comics) for kids everyone as a kid has atleast read one tome and enjoyed it, but the art in it is almost g/re and disturbing. The kid show Titeuf also feature fan servicy women characters, the comics is even a tiny bit explicit, yet everyone has read it and liked it as a kid. Maybe we are just weird in france Idk lol

@@jamielannister3721 By my profile picture ? Are your for real now ? I'm french, grew up in France, Anime and manga was only seen as nerdy in the late 90". Since the early 2000 Anime and manga are really mainstream, I'm 24 and since around 2010 you could easily access to it by just going in the grocery stores, for a fact, many teenagers where going there to sit and read comics and manga when they had free hole time in their school planning. And since mid 2010" the shelves have been even larger and are their own shopping alley. Anime was broadcasted in free national tv channel (TF1, France Ô, France 3, France 4, M6, Gulli, Canal J, MCM, Directstar) the most basics channel that everyoine had access to back then. In my middle school we had manga in the libraries (+ the fact that our head mistress was a freaking weeb and many teachers were also manga readers). You were ostracized for acting weird or being weird not for liking anime and manga. Even our art teacher said nothing to those who were drawing anime style. Many of my classmates were anime/manga enjoyers, talking about it during break time or by what they were posting on facebook. We were casually talking about BL and Vampire knight at freaking 13 during break times. Gothic people were the ones who were ostracized back then not anime fans. And I freaking grew up in the countryside, mind you most french people don't even know our region exist. The only ones who have a thing against it are 50+ old people and tighten up people. And even for them you have a lot of nerd who are fan of Goldorak or Albator (Captain Harlock) or Candy or Nicky Larson (City hunter). Anime and manga have been mainstream in our contry for 20 years now, why do you think we are the second most manga consumer after Japan ? We had the biggest japanese convention in Europe for a decade, compare to other countries we have tons of manga publisher tons of them who are not even translated in english or any langages other than japanese. The only european broadcasting for anime were french (ADN and Wakanim) until one of them was bought few years ago by crunchyroll who use now the platform wakanim.

@@jamielannister3721 To add : In 2021 our country created a Pass culture for 15-18 yo teenagers to be able to buy anything art/culture related (music, art, books, cinema -concert ticket, museum ticket, instruments, etc). And do you know what most teens did ? Most of them used these 300 euro gifted from the state to buy manga.

Pass culture was mostly allowed to be consumed only by French companies, French music, French movies, French plays, French games, and French museums. However, books and e-books were allowed to purchase products from other countries. As you know, there is no French culture that teenagers would like. Teenagers had no other choice but to buy comic books. And the most important reason was that 2021 was the COVID-19 era. All sports, museums, theatres, cinemas and venues have been suspended. In France, the pass culture policy is evaluated as a failure. You should study harder than watching animation.
